Background And Objectives: Arterial dissection during endovascular therapy rarely occurs but can be lethal. A fabric-based covered graft stents yield poor clinical outcomes. A novel balloon-expandable stent with biodegradable film graft for overcoming these issues was evaluated in a rabbit iliac artery model.

Background: A preanesthetic evaluation interview with an anesthesiologist is essential for patient safety, however, it is not performed adequately owing to the excessive workload of doctors. This study aimed to determine whether video-assisted preanesthetic patient education can reduce patient interview time and solve the problem of excessive labor at a relatively low cost.

Methods: This study considered relatively healthy patients aged 19 to 65 years who were scheduled for elective surgery under general anesthesia.

Article Synopsis
  • A study compared the effectiveness and safety of low-intensity atorvastatin combined with ezetimibe against moderate-intensity atorvastatin alone in 290 patients in Korea needing cholesterol-lowering therapy.
  • The results showed that the combination therapy (atorvastatin 5 mg + ezetimibe 10 mg) significantly lowered LDL cholesterol levels (49.2% reduction) compared to the other treatment groups, particularly outperforming ezetimibe alone (18.7%).
  • Overall, the combination therapy not only improved LDL cholesterol but also led to better results in total cholesterol and triglyceride levels, indicating it's a more effective option for patients with low to intermediate cardiovascular risk.

Microsatellite-unstable (MSI) cancers have distinct genetic and clinical features from microsatellite-stable cancers, but the molecular functional differences between MSI cancers originating from different tissues or organs have not been well studied because the application of usual differentially expressed gene (DEG) analysis is error-prone, producing too many noncancer-specific normally functioning genes. To maximize therapeutic efficacy, biomarkers reflecting cancer-specific differences between MSI cancers of different tissue origins should be identified. To identify functional differences between MSI colon and endometrial cancers, we combined DEG analysis and biclustering instead of DEG analysis alone and refined functionally relevant biclusters reflecting genuine functional differences between the 2 tumors.

Background And Purpose: Interhospital transfer is an essential practical component of regional stroke care systems. To establish an effective stroke transfer network in South Korea, an interactive transfer system was constructed, and its workflow metrics were observed.

Methods: In March 2019, a direct transfer system between primary stroke hospitals (PSHs) and comprehensive regional stroke centers (CSCs) was established to standardize the clinical pathway of imaging, recanalization therapy, transfer decisions, and exclusive transfer linkage systems in the two types of centers.

Proteinuria is typically quantified according to the spot urine protein-creatinine ratio (UPCR) and an association with cardiovascular events has not been thoroughly investigated in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. We investigated whether the severity of proteinuria assessed by spot UPCR is associated with an increased risk for cardiovascular outcomes in the CKD population, and whether the relationship is influenced by urine creatinine concentration. We analyzed 1746 patients enrolled as part of The KoreaN cohort study for Outcome in patients With Chronic Kidney Disease (KNOW-CKD).

Purpose: Surgical management of obstructive left colon cancer (OLCC) is still a matter of debate. The classic Hartmann procedure (HP) has a disadvantage that requires a second major operation. Subtotal colectomy/total abdominal colectomy (STC/TC) with ileosigmoid or ileorectal anastomosis is proposed as an alternative procedure to avoid stoma and anastomotic leakage.

Trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), a gut microbe-dependent metabolite, has been implicated as a novel risk factor for cardiovascular events related to obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The aim of the study was to test the hypothesis if TMAO is associated with the reduction of cardiovascular disease in the Korean obese patients who underwent bariatric surgery. From a subgroup of a multicenter, nonrandomized, controlled trial, titled KOBESS, 38 obese patients, 18 with and 20 without T2DM, who underwent Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) or sleeve gastrectomy (SG) were investigated.
