Article Synopsis
  • The study examines kidney transplantation outcomes for patients with renal AA amyloidosis, revealing previously unclear results regarding survival and disease recurrence, mostly based on older data.
  • Conducted as a retrospective multicenter cohort study, it analyzed patients who underwent transplantation in France from 2008 to 2018, focusing on factors like age and treatment methods.
  • Results indicated high survival rates (94% at 1 year, 85.5% at 5 years) but also significant complications, including infection (55.8%) and acute rejection episodes (27.9%), with a low recurrence rate of amyloidosis (5.8%).

Background And Objectives: Kappa free light chains (KFLC) seem to efficiently diagnose MS. However, extensive cohort studies are lacking to establish consensus cut-offs, notably to rule out non-MS autoimmune CNS disorders. Our objectives were to (1) determine diagnostic performances of CSF KFLC, KFLC index, and KFLC intrathecal fraction (IF) threshold values that allow us to separate MS from different CNS disorder control populations and compare them with oligoclonal bands' (OCB) performances and (2) to identify independent factors associated with KFLC quantification in MS.

Background: Hyperglycemia is the most common side-effect of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) inhibitors that are approved for the treatment of some advanced or metastatic breast cancers. This side-effect is likely due to the central role of PI3K in insulin signalling. Here we report the use of a sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor to manage severe hyperglycemia.

Article Synopsis
  • Childhood IgA nephropathy (cIgAN) presents similarly to Alport syndrome with symptoms like microscopic hematuria and proteinuria; studies suggest a link between familial cases and specific genetic regions on chromosome 2q36 related to collagen types COL4A3/A4.
  • Researchers sequenced genes COL4A3, COL4A4, and COL4A5 in 36 cIgAN patients, finding that 4 had significant COL4A3 variants, while no COL4A4 or COL4A5 variants were present, and most patients exhibited typical cIgAN features rather than Alport syndrome characteristics.
  • The findings suggest that COL4A3-cIgAN patients may experience more severe forms of

Impaired adhesion of neutrophils expressing Slc44a2/HNA-3b to VWF protects against NETosis under venous shear rates.

April 2021

Aix-Marseille University, INSERM, Institut National de Recherche pour l'Agriculture, l'Alimentation et l'Environnement (INRAE), Center for CardioVascular and Nutrition Research (C2VN), Marseille, France.

Genome-wide association studies linked expression of the human neutrophil antigen 3b (HNA-3b) epitope on the Slc44a2 protein with a 30% decreased risk of venous thrombosis (VT) in humans. Slc44a2 is a ubiquitous transmembrane protein identified as a receptor for von Willebrand factor (VWF). To explain the link between Slc44a2 and VT, we wanted to determine how Slc44a2 expressing either HNA-3a or HNA-3b on neutrophils could modulate their adhesion and activation on VWF under flow.

Comparison of Ticagrelor Versus Prasugrel to Prevent Periprocedural Myonecrosis in Acute Coronary Syndromes.

Am J Cardiol

August 2015

UMR MD2, Aix-Marseille Université, Marseille, France; Pole RUSH, Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Marseille, Marseille, France.

Guidelines recommend a ticagrelor loading dose (LD) before PCI or a prasugrel LD at the time of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in intermediate and high-risk non-ST-elevation acute coronary syndrome (NSTE-ACS). However, achieving an optimal PR inhibition at the time of PCI is critical to prevent adverse events and depends on the timing of LD intake in relation to PCI. We aimed to compare the rate of myonecrosis related to PCI in patients with NSTE-ACS receiving ticagrelor pretreatment versus prasugrel at the time of intervention.

Background: The clinical benefit of ticagrelor compared to clopidogrel in ACS patients suggested off-target property. Such pleiotropic effect could be mediated by circulating endothelial progenitor cells (EPC) which are critical for vascular healing. We aimed to investigate the impact of ticagrelor on EPC in acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).
