Introduction: The development of nicotine dependence (ND) is an important final step in the development of nicotine addiction, is associated with substantial morbidity and mortality, and makes long-term smoking cessation difficult.

Methods: We used questionnaire data and DNA from buccal swabs previously collected from a population-based case-control study in Northeastern Ontario, Canada; an area with high smoking and smoking-related disease rates. Women smokers were classified into heavy and light phenotypes, a proxy for ND, and we assessed the association between phenotype and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that have been associated with increased or decreased risk of ND.

A nutrition referral priority rating system in an outpatient oncology centre.

Can J Diet Pract Res

September 2011

Supportive Care Oncology Research Unit, Regional Cancer Program, Hôpital régional de Sudbury Regional Hospital, Sudbury, ON, Canada.

Purpose: An oncology nutrition referral priority rating system (NRPRS) was developed and evaluated as a tool to classify patients into nutrition risk categories and allocate reasonable wait times.

Methods: A retrospective chart audit (n=112), patient focus groups (n=14), and a prospective chart audit (n=179) were conducted to refine the tool. Using the NRPRS, the dietitians assigned a priority rating from the information on the referral and then compared it with a second rating after the first visit.

Defining normal jugular venous pressure with ultrasonography.

CJEM

July 2010

Emergency Department, Hôpital regional de Sudbury Regional Hospital, Northern Ontario Medical School of Medicine, 700 Paris St., Sudbury, Ontario, Canada.

Objective: Determination of jugular venous pressure (JVP) by physical examination (E-JVP) is unreliable. Measurement of JVP with ultrasonography (U-JVP) is easy to perform, but the normal range is unknown. The objective of this study was to determine the normal range for U-JVP.

RBM5 as a putative tumor suppressor gene for lung cancer.

J Thorac Oncol

March 2010

Tumour Biology Group, Department of Research, Regional Cancer Program of the Hôpital Régional de Sudbury Regional Hospital, 41 Ramsey Lake Road, Sudbury, Ontario P3E 5J1, Canada.

RBM5 is one member of a group of structurally related genes that includes RBM6 and RBM10. RBM10 maps to Xp11.23, and one allele is inactivated as a result of X chromosome inactivation.

Evaluation of cancer patient education and services.

J Cancer Educ

March 2010

Supportive Care Oncology Research Unit of the Regional Cancer Program, Hôpital Régional de Sudbury Regional Hospital, 41 Ramsey Lake Road, Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, P3E 4J1.

On their first visit to the Regional Cancer Program, all patients are provided with the "Information for Patients and Families" binder that was designed by an interdisciplinary cancer patient education team. Patients were asked to complete a survey to evaluate the usefulness of this binder. Timely delivery of the "Information for Patients and Families" binder validates a higher level of satisfaction with oncology services because patients are better informed and this translates into a reduction of psychosocial problems.

Purpose: This clinical practice guideline, based on a systematic review, evaluates second-line or subsequent therapy for patients with recurrent or progressive non-small cell lung cancer.

Methods: Relevant randomized trials and meta-analyses were identified through a systematic search of the literature. External feedback was obtained from practitioners in Ontario, and the guideline was approved by the provincial Lung Cancer Disease Site Group.

Anterior shoulder dislocations are the most common major joint dislocation seen in emergency departments. Intra-articular lidocaine is a useful method of analgesia for facilitating the reduction of anterior shoulder dislocations. Posterior shoulder dislocations represent a small minority of shoulder dislocations.

The aim of this study was to examine the expression of the RBM5 tumor suppressor, in relation to RBM6 and RBM10, to obtain a better understanding of the potential role played by these RBM5-related factors in the regulation of RBM5 tumor-suppressor activity. Paired non-tumor and tumor samples were obtained from 73 breast cancer patients. RNA and protein expression were examined by semi-quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and immunoblot, respectively.

RBM5/LUCA-15/H37 is a nuclear SR-related RNA binding protein with the ability to modulate both apoptosis and the cell cycle, and retard tumour formation. How RBM5 functions to carry out these, potentially interrelated, biological activities is unknown. Since reversible phosphorylation has been shown to play an important role in the regulation of SR protein function, apoptosis and cell cycle control, in an attempt to elucidate the underlying mechanisms regulating RBM5 function, the phosphorylation status of RBM5 was investigated.

Cellular adhesion molecules are critical components during carcinogenesis and cancer metastasis and contribute to the mechanisms underlying resistance to chemotherapeutic drugs. Since drug resistance is associated with a very poor prognosis for patients with cancer, a better understanding of the role of adhesion molecules could improve patient outcome by identifying novel mechanisms that promote drug resistance. Epigenetic factors, such as cellular adhesion, are shown to promote the resistance of cancers to various chemotherapeutic drugs by altering cellular signalling pathways that activate cellular growth and inhibit apoptosis.

Purpose: Preclinical studies indicate that conventional chemotherapeutic agents given continuously at low doses (metronomic chemotherapy) may provide an improved therapeutic index. Cyclophosphamide and vinblastine have been best studied in experimental models, where tumor growth inhibition is achieved, at least in part, through antiangiogenic mechanisms.

Experimental Design: Fifty patients with advanced solid tumors were enrolled in this phase II trial, 43 of whom had received at least one prior chemotherapy regimen.

A comparative evaluation of two head and neck immobilization devices using electronic portal imaging.

Br J Radiol

February 2006

Northeastern Ontario Regional Cancer Centre, Hôpital régional de Sudbury Regional Hospital, 41 Ramsey Lake Road, Sudbury, Ontario, P3E 5J1, Canada.

A study was performed to compare the positioning reproducibility and the cost efficiency for two head and neck immobilization devices: the Uvex (Uvex Safety, Smithfield, USA) plastic mask system and the Finesse Frame with Ultraplast System (PLANET Medical, Svendborg, Denmark). 20 patients treated with 3D conformal radiation therapy for head and neck cancers were randomly selected (10 for each of the two different immobilization systems) and electronic portal images acquired during their course of treatment were saved and used in this study. The anatomical landmark coordinates and their shifts in the anteroposterior (AP) and craniocaudal (CC) directions with respect to the digitized simulator films for lateral fields were analysed using an in-house developed portal image registration system.
