Traditional packed beds in chromatography suffer from increased band broadening due to the random nature of packing, leading non-ideal fluid flow and channeling. To address these challenges, pillar array columns have been developed, offering improved performance over random packing thanks to their homogenous fluid profiles. The study aims to i) evaluate fluid dynamics and chromatographic performance across different PAC morphologies, ii) establish the influence of column morphology on performance, and iii) assess the correlation between chromatographic performance and hydrodynamic parameters.

In very different societal contexts, parenthood has been identified as a critical turning point in life course trajectories. In this qualitative study, we explore parenthood as a turning point for 40 young women and 40 young men in prisons across Latin America. We study the impact of parenthood on criminal trajectories, identify gender differences, and analyze the different mechanisms at work.

Resorcinol is a widespread substance used in a large variety of manufacturing industries, including cosmetics, with endocrine-disrupting activity on the thyroid function. The aim of the present study was to develop and validate a sensitive, selective and robust method to quantify resorcinol in urine and thereby assess hairdressers' occupational exposure. As resorcinol is mainly excreted in urine as glucuronide or sulfate forms, the first step consisted in hydrolyzing urine samples with a β-glucuronidase-arylsulfatase enzyme for 16 h.

The oceanic dissolved organic matter (DOM) reservoir is one of Earth's largest carbon pools, yet the factors contributing to its recalcitrance and persistence remain poorly understood. Here, we employed ultra-high resolution mass spectrometry (UHRMS) to examine the molecular dynamics of DOM from terrestrial, marine and mixed sources during bio-incubation over weekly, monthly, and one year time spans. Using Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS), we classified DOM into three distinct categories (Consumed, Resistant and Product) based on their presence or absence at the start and end of the incubation.

Ammonia (NH) holds promise as a carbon-free fuel. Blending it with highly reactive fuels could efficiently alleviate issues such as slow burning rates and narrow flammability ranges. Ethanol (CHOH) offers the advantage of carbon neutrality and has a high-octane rating.

Background: Erlotinib is a potent first-generation epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor. Due to its proximity to the upper limit of tolerability, dose adjustments are often necessary to manage potential adverse reactions resulting from its pharmacokinetic (PK) variability.
Methods: Population PK studies of erlotinib were identified using PubMed databases.

Competition is ubiquitous and an important driver of tree mortality. Non-structural carbohydrates (NSCs, including soluble sugars and starch) and C-N-P stoichiometries are affected by the competitive status of trees and, in turn, physiologically determine tree growth and survival in competition. However, the physiological mechanisms behind tree mortality caused by intraspecific competition remain unclear.

Biomarker research characterising the effect of anti-tuberculosis (TB) chemotherapy on systemic body response is still limited. In this study, we aimed to investigate fluctuations in circulating cell-free mitochondrial DNA (ccf-mtDNA) and circulating cell-free nuclear DNA (ccf-nDNA) copy number (CN) in blood plasma of patients with drug-susceptible TB (DS-TB) and to decipher factors related to these fluctuations. The results showed considerable changes in ccf-mtDNA CN in plasma samples before drug intake and 2 and 6 h afterwards, with high inter patient variability at each time point.

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy has great potential for laboratory blood tests. The overall aim of this study is to develop a microfluidic sensor for determining the physical properties and hematological parameters of blood based on its dielectric spectra. Impedance was measured in flowing blood to prevent aggregation and sedimentation at frequencies between 40 Hz and 110 MHz.

Mutation or deletion of the deubiquitinase USP7 causes Hao-Fountain syndrome (HAFOUS), which is characterized by speech delay, intellectual disability, and aggressive behavior and highlights important unknown roles of USP7 in the nervous system. Here, we conditionally delete USP7 in glutamatergic neurons in the mouse forebrain, triggering disease-relevant phenotypes, including sensorimotor deficits, impaired cognition, and aggressive behavior. Although USP7 deletion induces p53-dependent neuronal apoptosis, most behavioral abnormalities in USP7 conditional knockout mice persist following p53 loss.

Mammalian Dicer has been proved to be functional on double-stranded RNAs (dsRNAs) and involved in antiviral immunity or immune regulation. Here, we present a protocol for identifying Dicer as a dsRNA binding and cleaving factor to transfected dsRNA in cell lines, based on small RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) and dsRNA-immunoprecipitation (dsRNA-IP). We detail both experimental processes and analysis on small RNA-seq data.

Purpose: Mortality and morbidity of patients with bloodstream infection (BSI) remain high despite advances in diagnostic methods and efforts to speed up reporting. This study investigated the impact of reporting rapid Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC)-results in Gram negative BSIs with the ASTar system (Q-linea, Uppsala, Sweden) on the adaptation of empirically started antimicrobial therapy. We performed a real-world study during which antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) results were instantly reported to the treating physician in an established multidisciplinary antimicrobial stewardship setting.

Purpose: Blood loss and pain management are significant concerns in total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Tranexamic acid (TA) and cryotherapy have been used separately to address these issues, but their comparative effectiveness is not well studied. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of intravenous TA and cryotherapy in reducing blood loss and improving clinical outcomes after TKA.

In recent years, the use of cationic peptides as alternative drugs with anticancer activity has received attention. In this study, the targeted release of curcumin (Cur) and CM11 peptide alone and together against hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) was evaluated using chitosan nanoparticles (CS NPs) coated with Pres1 that target the SB3 antigen of HCC cells (PreS1-Cur-CM11-CS NPs). SB3 protein is the specific antigen of HCC and the PreS1 peptide is a part of the hepatitis B antigen, which can specifically bind to the SB3 protein.

Background: Sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) often results from neuroinflammation. Recent studies have shown that brain platelet-derived growth factor receptor β (PDGFRβ) cells, including pericytes, may act as early sensors of infection by secreting monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), which transmits inflammatory signals to the central nervous system. The erythroblast transformation-specific (ETS) transcription factor Friend leukemia virus integration 1 (Fli-1) plays a critical role in inflammation by regulating the expression of key cytokines, including MCP-1.

Purpose: The adoption of robotic-assisted total hip arthroplasty (THA) is increasingly widespread, yet its influence on outcomes in outpatient surgery remains uncertain. This study aimed to evaluate whether robotic assistance reduces the rate of 90-day postoperative events in patients undergoing outpatient THA, compared to those in inpatient procedures.
Methods: This historical-prospective cohort study analyzed 706 primary THA cases performed between January 2017 and January 2023 by three senior surgeons.

Coordinatively unsaturated copper (Cu) has been demonstrated to be effective for electrifying CO reduction into C products by adjusting the coupling of C-C intermediates. Nevertheless, the intuitive impacts of ultralow coordination Cu sites on C products are scarcely elucidated due to the lack of synthetic recipes for Cu with low coordination numbers and its vulnerability to aggregation under reductive potentials. Herein, computational predictions revealed that Cu sites with higher levels of coordinative unsaturation favored the adsorption of C and C intermediates.
