For cervical cancer (CC), circulating cell-free HPV DNA (ccfHPV) may establish disease severity. Furthermore, HPV integration has been correlated to viral load and survival. In this study, pre-treatment plasma from 139 CC cases (50 primary surgery patients, 22 primary surgery + adjuvant oncological therapy patients, and 67 primary oncological therapy patients) was collected (2018-2020).

Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate whether there is a higher prevalence of anxiety-depressive disorders in women with BPS/IC (bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis) than in women with chronic non-neoplastic pain with or without fibromyalgia, to examine possible correlations between urological and psychiatric symptoms.

Methods: The patients included in the study were divided into two groups: 1) group 0: patients with an existing diagnosis of BPS/IC. BPS/IC was confirmed by reviewing medical record; group 1+2: patients with chronic non-neoplastic pain, suffering from fibromyalgia or other types of chronic pain (chronic arthralgia or lower back pain).

J Clin Med

August 2023

Department of Molecular and Developmental Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecological Clinic, University of Siena, 53100 Siena, Italy.

Endometriosis affects approximately 10% of premenopausal women worldwide. Despite its impact on quality of life, the delay in diagnosing this chronic disease is well known. Many patients with endometriosis report having suffered from dysmenorrhea and chronic pelvic pain in adolescence or at a young age.

This study aimed to develop a dynamic model for predicting outcome during the first trimester of pregnancy using baseline demographic data and serially collected blood samples and transvaginal sonographies. A prospective cohort of 203 unselected women with an assumed healthy pregnancy of < 8 weeks' gestation was followed fortnightly from 4-14 weeks' gestation until either miscarriage or confirmed first trimester viability. The main outcome was development of a model to predict outcome from gestational age-dependent hazard ratios using both baseline and updated serial data from each visit.

Background: Thyroid hormones are known to regulate bone metabolism and may influence bone mineral density (BMD), as well as the risk of osteoporosis (OP) and fractures in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Recently, sensitivity to thyroid hormone indices has been linked with T2DM and OP independently. However, the relationship between thyroid hormone sensitivity and OP in euthyroid T2DM patients has yet to be investigated.

Eur J Obstet Gynecol Reprod Biol

September 2023

Department of General Surgery and Medical Surgical Specialties, Gynecological Clinic, Research Group for Sexology, University of Catania, Via Santa Sofia 78, PC 95123, Catania, Italy.

Objective: The aim of this non-randomized control study was to assess the effect of Drospirenone (DRSP) only pill (DOP) 4 mg, in a 24 active/4 placebo regimen, on the mood of postpartum women who wanted to use a hormonal contraceptive.

Study Design: Seventy-one women in the study group, and 78 in the control group, were included in intention-to-treat analyses. The depression score was assessed using the self-administrated Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) at the childbirth preparation course (T0), and at 2 (T1), 12 (T2), and 24 (T3) weeks postpartum follow-ups.

Our aim was to compare the inter-rater agreement about transvaginal ultrasonography (TVS) with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with regard to diagnosing adenomyosis and for assessing various predefined imaging features of adenomyosis, in the same set of women. The study cohort included 51 women, prospectively, consecutively recruited based on a clinical suspicion of adenomyosis. MRIs and TVS videoclips and 3D volumes were retrospectively assessed by four experienced radiologists and five experienced sonographers, respectively.

Oral HPV Infection in Women with HPV-Positive Cervix Is Closely Related to Oral Sex.

Diagnostics (Basel)

June 2023

Department of General Surgery and Medical Surgery Specialties, Gynecological Clinic, University of Catania, Via S.Sofia 78, 95123 Catania, Italy.

The oral transmission of HPV and, consequently, the risk of oral cancer has increased in the last years. Oral sex has often been implicated among the risk factors for oral HPV infections, however, there is still no consensus on these topics, nor on the relationship between genital and oral HPV infections. The present study aimed to evaluate the coexistence of papilloma virus, at the levels of the oral and genital mucosa, in women with a histologically confirmed HPV lesions (and a positive HPV test) at the genital level and a negative HPV control group.

Background: Few studies have investigated the role of the phosphodiesterase type 5A (PDE5A) isoenzyme in female genital tissue disorders, exclusively taken from cadavers, as well as the epigenetic mechanisms responsible for the regulation of PDE5A levels.

Aim: The aim was to study the in vivo association between microRNA (miRNA) expression and the expression levels of PDE5A in women with female genital arousal disorder (FGAD) compared with healthy women.

Methods: Premenopausal women affected by FGAD (cases) and sexually healthy women (control group) underwent microbiopsy of the periclitoral anterior vaginal wall for the collection of tissue samples.

Papillomavirus Infection as Potential Cause of Miscarriage in the Early Gestational Age: A Prospective Study.

Diagnostics (Basel)

May 2023

Department of General Surgery and Medical Surgery Specialties, Gynecological Clinic, University of Catania, 95123 Catania, Italy.

The possible association between human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and negative pregnancy outcomes has been debated in the literature, with conflicting results from clinical trials. While some authors support a link between HPV and miscarriage, others argue that the mere detection of the virus does not necessarily indicate a causal relationship with negative pregnancy outcomes. In this study, we conducted a prospective, controlled investigation of the potential association between HPV infection and miscarriage.

Application of machine learning algorithms to predict osteoporosis in postmenopausal women with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

J Endocrinol Invest

December 2023

Department of Endocrinology, Cangzhou Central Hospital, 16 Xinhua West Road, Cangzhou, 061000, Hebei, People's Republic of China.

Purpose: The screening and diagnosis of osteoporosis in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) based on bone mineral density remains challenging because of the limited availability and accessibility of dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. We aimed to develop and validate models to predict the risk of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women with T2DM based on machine learning (ML) algorithms.

Methods: This retrospective study included 303 postmenopausal women with T2DM.
