In the present study, we investigated the roles and molecular mechanism of 10-gingerol, a phenolic compound isolated from Zingiber officinale, in regulating cell proliferation and invasion of MDA‑MB‑231 breast cancer cells. 10-gingerol treatment inhibited cell proliferation through downregulation of cell cycle regulatory proteins such as cyclin-dependent kinases and cyclins, and subsequent induction of G1 phase arrest. In addition, 10‑gingerol treatment blocked cell invasion in response to mitogenic stimulation.

In the present study, we investigated the effects and molecular mechanism of marmesin, a coumarin compound isolated from Broussonetia kazinoki, on vascular endothelial growth factor-A (VEGF-A)-induced endothelial cell responses in vitro and angiogenic sprouting in aortic rings ex vivo. Marmesin treatment inhibited VEGF-A-stimulated endothelial cell proliferation through down-regulation of cell cycle-related proteins including cyclin-dependent kinases and cyclins, leading to pRb hypophosphorylation and G1 phase cell cycle arrest. In addition, marmesin treatment abrogated VEGF-A-induced endothelial cell migration, invasion and capillary-like structure formation in vitro as well as angiogenic sprouting ex vivo.

Changes of glycosylation pattern in serum proteins have been linked to various diseases including cancer, suggesting possible development of novel biomarkers based on the glycomic analysis. In this study, N-linked glycans from human serum were quantitatively profiled by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry (MS) and compared between healthy controls and ovarian cancer patients. A training set consisting of 40 healthy controls and 40 ovarian cancer cases demonstrated an inverse correlation between P value of ANOVA and area under the curve (AUC) of each candidate biomarker peak from MALDI-TOF MS, providing standards for the classification.
