While invasive success of alien plant species is often attributed to their superior competitive abilities, it is also suggested that competitive ability depends on the target species of competition and resource availability. In addition, it remains unclear whether invaders and co-occurring plants in the introduced area exhibit distinctive inter- and intraspecific competitive intensities. This study aimed to evaluate the competitive ability of a successful invader, , through a combination of field surveys and a growth chamber experiment.

A new design for light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with on-chip photocatalysts is presented for purification applications. An array of disk-shaped TiO, with a diameter of several hundred nanometers, combined with SiO pedestals was fabricated directly on the surface of an InGaN-based near-ultraviolet (UV) LED using a dry etching process. The high refractive-index contrast at the boundary and the circular shape can effectively confine the near-UV light generated from the LED through multiple internal reflections inside the TiO nanodisks.

Numerous DNA sensors have been developed to evaluate the extent of nuclease activity but their DNA termini are not protected against other nucleases, hampering accurate quantification. Here we developed a new fluorescence enhancement (FE)-based method as an enzyme-specific DNA biosensor with nuclease-protection by three functional units (an AP-site, Cy3 and termini that are protected from exonucleolytic cleavage).

We report the synthesis and reactivity of a model of [Fe]-hydrogenase derived from an anthracene-based scaffold that includes the endogenous, organometallic acyl(methylene) donor. In comparison to other non-scaffolded acyl-containing complexes, the complex described herein retains molecularly well-defined chemistry upon addition of multiple equivalents of exogenous base. Clean deprotonation of the acyl(methylene) C-H bond with a phenolate base results in the formation of a dimeric motif that contains a new Fe-C(methine) bond resulting from coordination of the deprotonated methylene unit to an adjacent iron center.

Although these polymer blends contain semiconducting polymers (SPs) mixed with a considerably high content of insulating polymers, few of these blends unexpectedly yield much higher charge carrier mobilities than those of pure SPs. However, the origin of such an enhancement has remained unclear owing to a lack of cases exhibiting definite improvements in charge carrier mobility, and the limited knowledge concerning the underlying mechanism thereof.

Plasmonic metafilms have been widely utilized to generate vivid colors, but making them both active and flexible simultaneously remains a great challenge. Here flexible active plasmonic metafilms constructed by printing electrochromic nanoparticles onto ultrathin metal films (<15 nm) are presented, offering low-power electricallydriven color switching. In conjunction with commercially available printing techniques, such flexible devices can be patterned using lithography-free approaches, opening up potential for fullyprinted electrochromic devices.

In particular, functional traits associated with rapid growth rate and high fecundity likely facilitate invasive success. As such traits often exhibit high phenotypic plasticity, characterizing plastic responses to anthropogenic environmental changes such as eutrophication and disturbance is important for predicting the invasive success of alien plant species in the future.

Acclimatable colors in response to environmental stimuli, which are naturally endowed with some living things, can provide an opportunity for humans to recognize hazardous substances without taking empirical risks. Despite efforts to create artificial responsive colors, realistic applications in everyday life require an immediate/distinct colorimetric realization with wide chromatic selectivity. A dynamically responsive virus (M-13 phage)-based changeable coloring strategy is presented with a highly lossy resonant promoter (HLRP).

Until now, chemical carboxylation catalyzed by organometallic nucleophiles and reductants has been generally adopted particularly for the precise selectivity control of carboxylation sites. As another approach, electrochemical carboxylation has been attempted but these carboxylation reactions are limited to only a few pathways.

Carbazole-based conjugated small molecule electrolytes (CSEs) containing different numbers of amine groups were synthesized and applied to bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) organic solar cells for the formation of a spontaneous self-assembled electron transporting layer (ETL). The active layer was spin-coated with a mixture solution containing the BHJ materials and a small amount of CSE, and a thin layer of CSE was formed underneath the active layer (CSE/BHJ bi-layer) spontaneous phase separation, which is confirmed by the depth profile of the time of flight secondary ion mass spectroscopy (ToF-SIMS) spectrum. The amino groups in the CSEs form hydrogen-bonds with the surface of indium tin oxide (ITO), which acts as an ETL in BHJ solar cells.

As a renewable and sustainable energy source and an alternative to fossil fuels, solar-driven water splitting with photoelectrochemical (PEC) cell is a promising approach to obtain hydrogen fuel with its near-zero carbon emission pathway by transforming incident sunlight, the most abundant energy source. Because of its importance and future prospects, a number of architectures with their own features have been formed by various synthesis and growth methods. Because the materials themselves are one of the most dominant components, they determine the solar-to-hydrogen efficiency of the PEC cells.

In this study, vertically stacked centimeter-scale multi-TMD (MoS/WS/WSe and MoS/WSe) thin films are successfully fabricated via sequential pulsed laser deposition (PLD), which is an in situ growth process. The fabricated MoS/WS/WSe thin film on p-type silicon (p-Si) substrate is designed to form multistaggered gaps (type-II band structure) with p-Si, and this film exhibits excellent spatial and thickness uniformity, which is verified by Raman spectroscopy.

Among the conducting polymers, poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) has been extensively investigated for organic thermoelectric device applications owing to its high electrical conductivity (), flexibility and easy processability. The thermoelectric (TE) power factor - a factor that determines the efficiency of a thermoelectric material, is very critical in developing high-efficiency thermoelectric devices. The TE power factor of PEDOT:PSS requires further enhancement in realizing efficient organic TE devices.

Investigations of the neuro-physiological correlates of mental loads, or states, have attracted significant attention recently, as it is particularly important to evaluate mental fatigue in drivers operating a motor vehicle. In this research, we collected multimodal EEG/ECG/EOG and fNIRS data simultaneously to develop algorithms to explore neuro-physiological correlates of drivers' mental states. Each subject performed simulated driving under two different conditions (well-rested and sleep-deprived) on different days.

Brain-computer interface (BCI) performance has achieved continued improvement over recent decades, and sensorimotor rhythm-based BCIs that use motor function have been popular subjects of investigation. However, it remains problematic to introduce them to the public market because of their low reliability. As an alternative resolution to this issue, visual-based BCIs that use P300 or steady-state visually evoked potentials (SSVEPs) seem promising; however, the inherent visual fatigue that occurs with these BCIs may be unavoidable.

While brain computer interface (BCI) can be employed with patients and healthy subjects, there are problems that must be resolved before BCI can be useful to the public. In the most popular motor imagery (MI) BCI system, a significant number of target users (called "BCI-Illiterates") cannot modulate their neuronal signals sufficiently to use the BCI system. This causes performance variability among subjects and even among sessions within a subject.
