Background: Most patients with small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) present with extensive-stage (ES) disease and have a poor prognosis despite achieving high initial response rates to platinum-based doublet chemotherapy. This study evaluated whether adding hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) to chemotherapy could improve outcomes.
Methods: This was a randomised multicentre phase II trial.

Introduction: Mutation-specific disease modifying drugs such as the triple combination Elexacaftor/Tezacaftor/Ivacaftor (ETI), are associated with significant improvements in physical health. Reproductive health and a pursuit of parenthood are of increased relevance; a dramatic increase in childbirth rates for females with CF has already been observed.
Areas Covered: Fertility in males and females with CF, and any subsequent impact of CFTR modulator therapy, is reviewed.

Background The purpose of this study was to evaluate the outcomes of alveoplasty and primary closure following dental extractions in patients with an elevated medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) risk.Study design A retrospective review of 46 patients with an elevated MRONJ risk was conducted. This included a total of 124 teeth extracted, due to unrestorable caries (n = 46; 37%) and peri-apical pathology (n = 44; 35%).

Patients with existing or a history of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) are considered to be at a higher risk of further developing MRONJ, particularly if dental extractions are necessary. It is assumed that their underlying risk factors predispose them to developing MRONJ and they are allocated into an 'elevated risk group'. There is no evidence to quantify this risk level; however, it has led to an avoidance of dental extractions in this cohort.

Background: In the absence of direct evidence supporting how to use nasal endoscopy findings to judge chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) disease control, experts' practice patterns could provide guidance.
Methodology: Participants consisted of a diverse group of twenty-nine rhinologists. Participants were presented with every possible combination of bilateral nasal endoscopy findings represented by the modified Lund-Kennedy (MLK; range: 0-12) endoscopic scoring system and Nasal Polyp Score (NPS; range: 0-8).

Background: Using a large population-based dataset, we primarily sought to compare postoperative complications, health-care expenditures, and re-intervention rates between patients diagnosed with ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO) undergoing stented vs. non-stented pyeloplasty. The secondary objective was to investigate factors that influence the timing of DJ stent removal.

Aim In clinically challenging scenarios with limited bone height and anatomical restrictions, the use of short implants have been proposed as a potential treatment strategy. The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate the clinical outcomes of short implants supporting prostheses in the posterior premolar region of the maxilla and mandible.Materials and methods A total of 30 patients requiring short 6 mm length implant placement in the posterior premolar region were included.

Background: Since the COVID-19 pandemic, movement disorder clinics have seen an increase in patients with an unusual type of tic-like symptoms: young adults with abrupt onset complex behaviors. It was quickly suspected that these patients suffered from functional neurological symptoms, later named Functional Tic-Like Behaviors (FTLB). Subsequent research on the differential diagnosis between FTLB and tics has been substantial and led to the development of diagnostic checklists.

This is the final of four papers updating standards for the care of people with CF. That this paper "Planning a longer life" was considered necessary, highlights how much CF care has progressed over the past decade. Several factors underpin this progress, notably increased numbers of people with CF with access to CFTR modulator therapy.

Unscheduled bleeding on hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can affect up to 40% of users. In parallel with the increase in HRT prescribing in the UK, there has been an associated increase in referrals to the urgent suspicion of cancer pathway for unscheduled bleeding. On behalf of the British Menopause Society (BMS) an expert review panel was established, including primary and secondary care clinicians with expertise in the management of menopause, with representatives from key related organisations, including the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists, the British Gynaecological Cancer Society, British Society for Gynaecological Endoscopy, Royal College of General Practitioners and Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Health, and service development partners from NHS England and GIRFT (Getting it Right First Time).

To evaluate subcutaneous Botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A) efficacy in alleviating severe allodynia in complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) type II post-digit reconstruction. After surgical debridement and flap reconstruction for post-traumatic necrosis, a CRPS type II patient received subcutaneous BTX-A. Assessments tracked symptom changes and daily life improvements.

National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines are ambiguous over the need for patients at increased risk of infective endocarditis (IE) to receive antibiotic prophylaxis (AP) prior to invasive dental procedures (IDPs), and this has caused confusion for patients and dentists alike. Moreover, the current law on consent requires clinicians to ensure that patients are made aware of any material risk they might be exposed to by any proposed dental treatment and what can be done to ameliorate this risk, so that the patient can decide for themselves how they wish to proceed. The aim of this article is to provide dentists with the latest information on the IE-risk posed by IDPs to different patient populations (the general population and those defined as being at moderate or high risk of IE), and data on the effectiveness of AP in reducing the IE risk in these populations.

In 2008, National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines recommended against the use of antibiotic prophylaxis (AP) before invasive dental procedures (IDPs) to prevent infective endocarditis (IE). They did so because of lack of AP efficacy evidence and adverse reaction concerns. Consequently, NICE concluded AP was not cost-effective and should not be recommended.

The continuation of bone-modifying agents (BMAs) in patients with established medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a common concern among dentists and oncologists. There is little evidence supporting or refuting the continued use of BMAs or drug holidays and their impact on established MRONJ. This paper evaluates the outcome of continued BMAs use on the patient's MRONJ status.

Background And Objective: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a significant predictor of worse postoperative morbidity in cancer surgeries. No data have been available for patients with preoperative VTE and upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) undergoing radical nephroureterectomy (RNU). Our aim was to assess the impact of a preoperative VTE diagnosis on perioperative outcomes in the RNU context.

Palmar hyperhidrosis, a condition characterized by excessive sweating in the palms, considerably impacts the quality of life (QoL). Although various treatment modalities are available, the efficacy and safety of Botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A) needed further investigation. We conducted a literature review, with open-label, controlled trial, double-blind placebo-controlled and observational designs being eligible for inclusion, according to the PRISMA guidelines.
