November 2024

Centre of Restorative Dentistry Studies, Faculty of Dentistry, MARA University of Technology, Malaysia; Guy´s Hospital, Faculty of Dentistry, Oral and Craniofacial Sciences, King´s College London, UK.

This clinical report demonstrates how a two-implant mandibular implant-supported overdenture is planned and executed. The following steps feature the dual scan technique as part of implant planning and a radiographic-turned-surgical stent to guide a freehand, two-stage surgical placement of two implant fixtures on the bilateral canine positions of the mandibular arch.

GENCODE 2025: reference gene annotation for human and mouse.

European Molecular Biology Laboratory, European Bioinformatics Institute, Wellcome Genome Campus, Hinxton, Cambridge CB10 1SD, UK.

GENCODE produces comprehensive reference gene annotation for human and mouse. Entering its twentieth year, the project remains highly active as new technologies and methodologies allow us to catalog the genome at ever-increasing granularity. In particular, long-read transcriptome sequencing enables us to identify large numbers of missing transcripts and to substantially improve existing models, and our long non-coding RNA catalogs have undergone a dramatic expansion and reconfiguration as a result.

Growth plate cartilage (GP) serves as a dynamic site of active mineralization and offers a unique opportunity to investigate the cell-regulated matrix mineralization process. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) provides a means for the direct observation of these mechanisms, offering the necessary resolution and chemical analysis capabilities. However, as mineral crystallinity is prone to artifacts using aqueous fixation protocols, sample preparation techniques are critical to preserve the mineralized tissue in its native form.

Article Synopsis
  • The CUT-less trial investigates whether patients diagnosed with low-risk non-muscle-invasive bladder cancers (NMIBCs) can safely skip a second transurethral resection of bladder tumor (Re-TURBT) by using advanced imaging and diagnostic techniques during their initial treatment.
  • The study involves 327 patients who will receive either standard care with a second TURBT or an experimental procedure using photodynamic diagnosis (PDD) without the second resection, to see if outcomes remain comparable.
  • Key measures of the trial include short-term recurrence rates of bladder cancer, as well as assessments of patients' quality of life and the economic impact of the treatment options.

Article Synopsis
  • Before the 1800s, dental care was mostly nonexistent, especially for children.
  • In the mid-19th century, William Macpherson Fisher advocated for children's dental services, while Sidney Spokes created the School Dentists' Society to connect like-minded dentists.
  • Their efforts significantly improved dental care for children and enhanced the working conditions for school dentists.

Background: Few studies focus upon patient-reported outcomes in endodontics.

Aim: To determine whether full pulpotomy offers a less painful, improved health-related quality of life (HRQoL) compared with root canal treatment (RCT) in cases of irreversible pulpitis (IP) in the 7 days after the treatment.

Methodology: One hundred sixty-eight participants presenting with symptoms of IP were randomized to either pulpotomy (n = 86) or RCT (n = 82).

Age estimations are relevant for pre-trial detention, sentencing in criminal cases and as part of the evaluation in asylum processes to protect the rights and privileges of minors. No current method can determine an exact chronological age due to individual variations in biological development. This study seeks to develop a validated statistical model for estimating an age relative to key legal thresholds (15, 18, and 21 years) based on a skeletal (CT-clavicle, radiography-hand/wrist or MR-knee) and tooth (radiography-third molar) developmental stages.

To the trained eye, every tooth is different. An in-depth understanding of dental anatomy in cross-sectional images is a fundamental basic skill required when interpreting cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans. The conventional orthogonal planes of axial, coronal, and sagittal are not always the best planes in which to assess teeth because every tooth is at a slightly different angle to all these planes.

The influence of 'Golden Age' authors of detective fiction, in particular, D. L. Sayers, on the public opinion of dentists and dentistry.

General Dental Practitioner and Part-time Lecturer (Retired), Unit for the History of Dentistry, Faculty of Dentistry, Oral and Craniofacial Sciences, King´s College London, Guy´s Hospital, Tooley Street, London, SE1 1UL, UK.

With her wide readership and sympathetic and intelligent handling of dentists and dentistry in her detective novels and short stories, it is probable that Dorothy Leigh Sayers(1893-1957) influenced the public perception of dentists favourably, as being true professionals, particularly after the 1921 Act made it a fully closed specialty. Her encounter with a dental automaton seen when she was very young is acknowledged by her as a formative influence.

Excitatory and inhibitory synapses show a tight subcellular correlation that weakens over development.

Neurons receive correlated levels of excitation and inhibition, a feature that is important for proper brain function. However, how this relationship between excitatory and inhibitory inputs is established during the dynamic period of circuit wiring remains unexplored. Using multiple techniques, including in utero electroporation, electron microscopy, and electrophysiology, we reveal a tight correlation in the distribution of excitatory and inhibitory synapses along the dendrites of developing CA1 hippocampal neurons.

Article Synopsis
  • Glutamine synthetase (GS), encoded by the GLUL gene, converts glutamate to glutamine and plays a crucial role in neurotransmitter production and ammonia detoxification in the brain.
  • *Variations in the GLUL gene can lead to severe developmental delays and neurological disorders in infants due to improper regulation of GS levels.
  • *Research indicates that certain genetic mutations can result in a stable but non-regulated form of GS, highlighting the need for careful control of glutamine metabolism during brain development.

The suppression head impulse paradigm (SHIMP) involves suppression of the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) and anticompensatory saccades generated thereof. SHIMP is gaining importance to understand vestibular compensation with its different parameters (VOR gain/peak saccadic velocity PSV/latency of saccades). SHIMP studies are emerging in adults, but pediatric studies have hardly been performed.
