Laparoscopic nephrectomy in a patient with ankylosing spondylitis: surgical and anesthetic challenges.

A 55-year-old man with ankylosing spondylitis was referred with left sided loin pain, loin mass, and painless macroscopic hematuria. Physical examination revealed a palpable loin mass, fixed flexion deformity of the lumbar and cervical spines, with severely restricted cervical movement and mouth opening. An ultrasound and computed tomography scan confirmed a 7-cm solid mass in the left kidney.

Current trends in the diagnosis and management of renal nutcracker syndrome: a review.

Nutcracker syndrome is caused by compression of the left renal vein between the aorta and the superior mesenteric artery where it passes in the fork formed at the bifurcation of these arteries. The phenomenon results in left renal venous hypertension. The syndrome is manifested by left flank and abdominal pain, with or without unilateral haematuria.

Robotic assisted retroperitoneoscopic nephroureterectomy -- first experience and the hybrid port technique.

Robot-assisted renal surgery is usually performed transperitoneally due to more available space for excursion of the robotic arms. To our knowledge, we report the first experience with robotic retroperitoneoscopic nephroureterectomy using the Da Vinci Surgical System (Intuitive Surgical, Sunnyvale, CA, USA) and a hybrid port technique. Robotic retroperitoneal nephroureterectomy was performed on two male patients.
