Introduction Outpatient appointments are essential to patient care, yet rising non-attendance rates ('did not attend' DNAs) pose significant challenges, costing the National Health Service (NHS) over £1 billion annually. Traditional postal communication is inefficient and costly, while digital methods like short messaging service (SMS) and electronic mail (email) show the potential to improve attendance and reduce costs. This study investigates changes in patient preferences for orthopaedic outpatient communication methods between 2019 and 2024 at a busy district general hospital in London, UK.

The incidence of one-year venous thromboembolism (VTE) after cancer diagnosis is reported to be increasing for several types of cancer. The introduction of targeted anti-cancer therapies and immunotherapy into the therapeutic armamentarium of medical oncologists contributed to the significantly improved response rates and survival times of cancer patients. In recent years, a potential prothrombotic effect of several targeted anti-cancer agents and immunotherapy drugs has been suggested; however, the methodological limitations of clinical trials evaluating the possible role of these classes of drugs on the VTE risk often make the interpretation of their results difficult.

Simulation training has been growing in popularity, as a means to help supplement the training of surgical residents. The Newcastle Surgical Training Centre K-wiring course, a 1-day course designed for early-years surgical trainees, aims to teach essential skills in K-wire fixation for hand fractures. The course integrates lectures and hands-on practice with both simulated and cadaveric specimens, supported by a high faculty-to-delegate ratio.

Introduction: This study evaluated and compared the amount of apically extruded debris, unprepared wall surface areas, and dentinal crack formation resulting from root canal preparation using ProTaper Next (PTN), ProTaper Ultimate (PTU), and R-Motion (RM) file systems.
Methods: Forty-five palatal roots of maxillary first molars were shortened to a uniform length of 12 mm. The samples were divided randomly into 3 groups (n = 15/group) to be prepared using either PTN, PTU, and RM file systems.

Background: Exacerbations of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are important events and are associated with critical illness. Eosinophilic inflammation is a treatable trait commonly found during acute exacerbations of asthma and COPD. We hypothesised that for patients with eosinophilic exacerbations, a single injection of benralizumab, a humanised monoclonal antibody against interleukin-5 receptor-α, alone or in combination with prednisolone, will improve clinical outcomes compared with prednisolone, the standard of care.

Background: Pregnancy and early childhood cohorts provide a framework for investigating the complex interplay between early-life exposures and health outcomes, thereby informing prevention strategies and interventions to improve maternal and child health. In this paper, we outline the objectives, methodologies and expected contributions of INSIGHT-2, a comprehensive cohort study dedicated to advancing our understanding of pregnancy and pregnancy complications towards improving the health and well-being of mothers and their offspring.
Methods: Over the course of 5 years, the study aims to establish a diverse cohort of 1700 pregnant women and to follow up their children up to 2 years of age.

Importance: Prurigo nodularis (PN) is a chronic and debilitating skin condition, characterized by intense itch with multiple nodular lesions. Nemolizumab demonstrated significant improvements in itch and skin nodules in adults with moderate to severe PN in a previous 16-week phase 3 study (OLYMPIA 2).
Objective: To assess the efficacy and occurrence of adverse events in adults with moderate to severe PN treated with nemolizumab vs those receiving placebo.

Dysregulation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone-system (RAAS) in sepsis is a complex and early phenomenon with a likely significant contribution to organ failure and patient outcomes. A better understanding of the pathophysiology and intricacies of the RAAS in septic shock has led to the use of exogenous angiotensin II as a new therapeutic agent. In this review, we report a multinational and multi-disciplinary expert panel discussion on the role and implications of RAAS modulation in sepsis and the use of exogenous angiotensin II.

However, there is a lack of a standardised training and certification framework for clinical scientists and specialist physiologists (CSSPs) working within specialist valve clinics (SVCs). This study aimed to design, implement and validate a competency framework dedicated to training and certifying valve CSSPs to enhance patient outcomes and establish standardised care.
