The heart is a major target organ for thyroid hormone action, and marked changes occur in cardiac function in patients with hypo- or hyperthyroidism. T(3)-induced changes in cardiac function can result from direct or indirect T(3) effects. Direct effects result from T(3) action in the heart itself and are mediated by nuclear or extranuclear mechanisms.

Although the importance of specialist palliative care in home care programmes for terminally ill patients is well known, German community hospice services did not begin to employ nurses who had specialized in palliative care until the early 1990s. The general tasks of these nurses are sufficiently well defined, but no comprehensive data of their daily workload are available in Germany to date. The present article examines time expenditure in direct patient-related care at the community-based hospice service in Mainz, Germany, by analysing time registration sheets concerning 351 patients who received care from January 2000 until December 2002.

Introduction: Studies of hip arthroplasty have dealt mainly with total endoprosthesis, while tribology measurement values of hemi-endoprosthetic implants are rare. The small amount of experimental tribological data concerning materials of hemi-endoprosthetic implants in the form of pendulum trials, animal experiments, in vivo measurements on human hip joints and pin on disc studies report friction coefficients between 0.014 and 0.

An increased number and density of the so-called "giant ganglia" (seven or greater ganglion cells per ganglion) serve as histopathological criteria for a bowel motility disorder called intestinal neuronal dysplasia of the submucous plexus (IND B). However, because these morphological criteria have been defined based upon observations in constipated patients, the diagnostic value of previous studies is open to controversy. Moreover, no age-related reference data from unaffected controls are available.

Background: Median sternotomy is the most frequently used incision for cardiac procedures but carries a substantial risk for deep sternal wound infections and/or sternal dehiscence. In contrast to previous studies that examined risk factors for sternal infections this study evaluates factors that lead to poor outcome after surgical revision of the non healing sternum.
Methods: Between 1985 and 1999, 193 adults (mean age 64 +/- 9 years, m/f = 3/1) necessitated sternal revisions (incidence 1.

Quantitative imaging with the positron emitter (86)Y is the method of choice to determine the uptake and dosimetry of (90)Y-labelled radiopharmaceuticals. To examine the quantitative accuracy of positron emission tomography findings with (86)Y, this non-pure positron emitter was evaluated in a cylindrical phantom with rods of Teflon, water and air and measured with three different scanners: ECAT EXACT (2D/3D), ECAT HR+ (2D/3D) and PC4096+ (2D). After standard reconstruction, (86)Y radioactivity measured with the ECAT EXACT and related to the true radioactivity varied between 0.

To assess the economic effects of thyroid disorder-related morbidity in Germany, a systematic review of national and international literature from 1981-2001 was performed. Data from insurance companies, the government department of public health, and the federal office of statistics helped characterize the situation in Germany. Being the most important thyroid disease, endemic iodine-deficiency goiter causes economic costs of approximately 2.

Fusion of morphology and function has been shown to improve diagnostic accuracy in many clinical circumstances. Taking this into account, a number of instruments combining computed tomography (CT) with positron emission tomography (PET) or single-photon emission tomography (SPET) are appearing on the market. The aim of this study was to evaluate a simple and cost-effective approach to generate fusion images of similar quality.

Annexin V is a calcium binding protein, which is widely present in various cells and tissues. Due to an early release reaction after myocardial injury the determination of annexin V might be useful for the rapid diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to measure annexin V in comparison to myoglobin in samples from healthy individuals, patients suffering from acute or chronic liver, renal, and pulmonary diseases as well as acute coronary syndromes and aortocoronary bypass surgery.

The heart is an organ sensitive to the action of thyroid hormone, and measurable changes in cardiovascular performance are detected with small variations in thyroid hormone serum concentrations. Most patients with thyroid disease experience cardiovascular manifestations, and the most serious complications of thyroid dysfunction occur as a result of cardiac involvement. The increased metabolic state and oxygen consumption that occur in hyperthyroid patients require an increased supply of oxygen and removal of metabolic products from the periphery.

General agreement has emerged that the perceptions of patients of how they are feeling and how they are able to function in daily life should be included in the evaluation and monitoring of the effects of disease and treatment. Thyroid-associated orbitopathy (TAO), an inflammatory autoimmune eye disease, affects 50%-60% of patients with Graves' hyperthyroidism. Having blurred vision and/or diplopia has a detectable and significant impact on functional status and well-being, especially in role limitations caused by physical health problems.

Nitric oxide (NO) is a short-living free molecule synthesized by three different isoforms of nitric oxide synthases (NOS)-neuronal NOS, endothelial NOS, and inducible NOS-associated with neuromuscular transmission, muscle contractility, mitochondrial respiration, and carbohydrate metabolism in skeletal muscle. Neuronal NOS is constitutively expressed at the muscle fiber sarcolemma linked to the dystrophin-glycoprotein complex and concentrated at the neuromuscular endplate. There is increasing evidence that altered expression of neuronal NOS plays a role in muscle fiber damage in neuromuscular diseases such as dystrophinopathies and denervating disorders.
