Proprioception plays an important role in joint stability, and ankle sprains usually happen involving plantarflexion, internal rotation, and inversion. However, ankle 3D movement proprioception has never been measured in weight-bearing. Accordingly, the active 3-dimensional movement extent discrimination apparatus (AMEDA-3D) was developed and its reliability and validity were investigated.

Elevated levels of oxidative stress, inflammation, and a dysregulated osteoclastogenesis balance frequently characterize the microenvironment of osteoporosis, which impedes the processes of healing and repair. Existing treatment approaches are limited in scope and rely primarily on factors and drugs. An injectable hydrogel designed for the ROS-responsive release of HS gas is presented in this study.

microRNA-637/661 ameliorate hypoxic-induced pulmonary arterial hypertension by targeting TRIM29 signaling pathway.

Sci Rep

November 2024

Department of Intensive Care Unit, The Affiliated Suzhou Hospital of Nanjing Medical University, Suzhou Municipal Hospital, 242 Guangji Road, Suzhou, 215000, Jiangsu, People's Republic of China.

The pathogenesis of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is closely linked to the abnormal proliferation of pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells. Studies have demonstrated that microRNAs play pivotal roles in the progression of pulmonary hypertension. We found that microRNA-637 (miR-637) and microRNA-661 (miR-661) are expressed at low levels in the serum of PAH patients.

Introduction: Transforming acidic coiled-coil containing protein 3 (TACC3) exerts a vital role in cancer progression by modulating cell division and facilitating tumor growth. Given the lack of comprehensive research on the pancancer implications of TACC3, our study aimed to analyze the functional role of TACC3 in pancancer and validate it through experimental investigations in lung adenocarcinoma.

Methods: We first employed various bioinformatics techniques to investigate the expression and prognostic significance of TACC3 in pancancer.

State Key Laboratory of Reproductive Medicine and Offspring Health, Center for Reproduction and Genetics, The Affiliated Suzhou Hospital of Nanjing Medical University, Suzhou Municipal Hospital, Gusu School of Nanjing Medical University, Suzhou, 215002, China.

Ovarian cancer (OC) is one of the most prevalent and lethal malignancies affecting the female reproductive system, due to its tendency for metastasis and recurrence. This study identified the overexpression of LINC01320 (or long intergenic nonprotein coding RNA 1320) in tissues of ovarian cancer through the analysis of patient samples and online datasets. In vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrate that silencing of LINC01320 expression led to inhibition of proliferation and metastasis of OC cells.

Dynamical network-based evaluation for neuromuscular dysfunction in stroke-induced hemiplegia during standing.

J Neuroeng Rehabil

October 2024

Department of Neurological Rehabilitation, Suzhou Municipal Hospital, The Affiliated Suzhou Hospital of Nanjing Medical University, Gusu School of Nanjing Medical University, Suzhou, 215000, China.

Background: A given movement requires precise coordination of multiple muscles under the control of center nervous system. However, detailed knowledge about the changing characteristics of neuromuscular control for multi-muscle coordination in post-stroke hemiplegic patients during standing is still lacking. This study aimed to investigate the hemiplegia-linked neuromuscular dysfunction during standing from the perspective of multi-muscle dynamical coordination by utilizing a novel network approach - weighted recurrence network (WRN).

Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on identifying risk factors that influence recovery in patients with basal ganglia cerebral hemorrhage who underwent neuroendoscopy, as this type of hemorrhage is a significant cause of strokes.
  • A total of 130 patients were analyzed, using various machine learning models to evaluate important radiomic features and predict functional independence six months after discharge, with promising accuracy results (AUC values).
  • Ultimately, the findings suggest that advanced imaging techniques and machine learning can help evaluate outcomes for these patients, potentially guiding better treatment strategies.

TRIM59 is required for mouse GC-1 cell maintenance through modulating the ubiquitination of AXIN1.

Heliyon

September 2024

Department of Prenatal Diagnosis, Women's Hospital of Nanjing Medical University, Nanjing Maternity and Child Health Care Hospital, Nanjing, 210004, China.

Article Synopsis
  • TRIM59 is identified as a key biomarker in various tumors and has important but not well-defined roles in germ cells.
  • In the study using mouse spermatogonial cell line GC-1, TRIM59 was found to enhance cell growth and prevent cell death by regulating AXIN1 through ubiquitination, thus activating β-catenin signaling.
  • The findings suggest that TRIM59 plays a significant role in spermatogenesis, offering potential insights for treating male infertility.

Article Synopsis
  • - Peyronie's disease (PD) involves the formation of fibrous plaques in the penis, leading to curvature and other complications; this study tests four injectable agents to create a rat model for PD.
  • - TGF-β1 and fibrin injections caused pathology without curvature, while STS combined with TGF-β1 led to severe issues including necrosis and animal deaths.
  • - The combination of polidocanol (POL) with TGF-β1 produced similar pathological effects and curvature as STS + TGF-β1 but with fewer complications, suggesting it may be the safest and most relevant option for PD research.

Institutes of Biology and Medical Sciences, MOE Key Laboratory of Geriatric Diseases and Immunology, Jiangsu Key Laboratory of Infection and Immunity, Soochow University, Suzhou, 215000, China.

Arboviruses, transmitted by medical arthropods, pose a serious health threat worldwide. During viral infection, Post Translational Modifications (PTMs) are present on both host and viral proteins, regulating multiple processes of the viral lifecycle. In this study, a mammalian E3 ubiquitin ligase WWP2 (WW domain containing E3 ubiquitin ligase 2) is identified, which interacts with the NS1 protein of Zika virus (ZIKV) and mediates K63 and K48 ubiquitination of Lys 265 and Lys 284, respectively.

With the increasing incidence of kidney diseases, there is an urgent need to develop therapeutic strategies to combat post-injury fibrosis. Immune cells, including platelets, play a pivotal role in this repair process, primarily through their released cytokines. However, the specific role of platelets in kidney injury and subsequent repair remains underexplored.
