Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a devastating mechanical trauma. Although locomotion of model animals that mimic contusion SCI was actively examined, locomotion after penetrating SCI caused by sharp objects was not extensively studied. Severity of walking difficulty after partial transection of the spinal cord including penetrating SCI likely depends on the regions affected.

Objective: Balance problems are common in patients with stroke, and the Mini-Balance Evaluation Systems Test (Mini-BESTest) is a reliable and valid assessment tool for measuring balance function. Determining the minimal clinically important difference (MCID) is crucial for assessing treatment effectiveness. This study aimed to determine the MCID of the Mini-BESTest in patients with early subacute stroke.

According to numerous studies, it has been epidemiologically suggested that habitual coffee intake seems to prevent the onset of neurodegenerative diseases. In this study, we hypothesized that coffee consumption suppresses neuroinflammation, which is closely related to the development of neurodegenerative diseases. Using microglial BV-2 cells, we first found that the inflammatory responses induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulation was diminished by both coffee and decaffeinated coffee through the inhibition of an inflammation-related transcription factor, nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB).

[Purpose] To examine changes in physical activity levels between admission and discharge in patients hospitalized after stroke and fracture. [Participants and Methods] Patients with stroke (n=36) or fracture (n=41) wore an accelerometer during the daytime for three days after admission and before discharge. Physical activity was divided into sedentary behavior (SB), light-intensity (LIPA), and moderate-to-vigorous (MVPA), and then compared between hospital admission and discharge using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test.

Whether fibril formation increases or decreases cytotoxicity remains unclear. Aggregation of human islet amyloid polypeptide (hIAPP), a pivotal regulator of glucose homeostasis, impairs the function and viability of pancreatic β cells. Evidence suggests that low-order oligomers of hIAPP are more toxic to β cells than fibril.

Motopsin, a serine protease encoded by PRSS12, is secreted by neuronal cells into the synaptic clefts in an activity-dependent manner, where it induces synaptogenesis by modulating Na/K-ATPase activity. In humans, motopsin deficiency leads to severe intellectual disability and, in mice, it disturbs spatial memory and social behavior. In this study, we investigated mice that overexpressed motopsin in the forebrain using the Tet-Off system (DTG-OE mice).

T-cell senescence is thought to result from the age-related loss of the ability to mount effective responses to pathogens and tumor cells. In addition to aging, T-cell senescence is caused by repeated antigenic stimulation and chronic inflammation. Moreover, we demonstrated that T-cell senescence was induced by treatment with DNA-damaging chemotherapeutic agents.

Object: This study aimed to compare the reaching movement between two different spinal cord compression level groups in cervical myelopathy (CM) patients.
Methods: Nine CM patients with maximal cord compression at the C3-4 level (C3-4 group) and 15 CM patients with maximal cord compression at the C4-7 level (C4-7 group) participated in the study. We monitored three-dimensional (3D) reaching movement using an electronic-mechanical whack-a-mole-type task pre-and post-operatively.

Introduction: The flexor carpi radialis brevis (FCRB) is a rare anatomical variation, with a reported prevalence ranging from 0.9% to 8.7%.

Previously, we identified the association of leucine-rich repeat-containing G protein-coupled receptor 6 (LGR6) with oncogenic Wnt signaling, and its downregulation upon β-catenin knockdown in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells carrying CTNNB1 mutations. The aim of this study was to explore the mechanisms underlying this association and the accompanying phenotypes.

Nucleophosmin-anaplastic lymphoma kinase (NPM-ALK), a fusion protein generated by a chromosomal translocation, is a causative gene product of anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL). It induces cell proliferation and tumorigenesis by activating the transcription factor, signal transducer and activator of transcription factor 3 (STAT3). We herein demonstrated that STAT3 underwent acetylation at K685 in a manner that was dependent on the kinase activity of NPM-ALK.

Background: Vertebral compression fractures, which are commonly associated with older age and osteoporotic fractures, have an increased risk of re-fracture. Therefore, improving balance is important to prevent falls. The minimal important change (MIC) has been recommended for interpreting clinically meaningful changes in rating scales.

Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) improve heart failure (HF) outcomes across a range of patient characteristics. A hypothesis that SGLT2i induce metabolic change similar to fasting has recently been proposed to explain their profound clinical benefits. However, it remains unclear whether SGLT2i primarily induce this change in physiological settings.

We characterized serotype 24F sequence type (ST) 162 isolated from Japanese children with invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD). Owing to its highly invasive nature, serotype 24F is expected to be isolated from clinically significant cases. Serotype 24F ST162 isolates tested in the present study did not grow at 35°C in ambient air.

Nobiletin (5,6,7,8,3',4'-hexamethoxyflavone) is one of the flavonoids found in shikuwasa, a popular citrus fruit in Okinawa, Japan. It exerts various pharmacological effects, such as anti-tumor, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory activities. We herein investigated whether nobiletin attenuated lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammatory responses in the murine microglial cell line BV-2 and neuroinflammation in mice induced by an intracerebral injection of LPS.

Haemosiderotic synovitis (HS) is a rare synovial proliferative disease secondary to haemarthrosis, often with articular cartilage destruction. It is most frequently reported in patients with haemophiliacs, and the knee joint is most frequently affected. However, there are no reports on the elbow joint without haemophiliacs.

Polyalanine (polyA) disease-causative proteins with an expansion of alanine repeats can be aggregated. Although curative treatments for polyA diseases have not been explored, the dissociation of polyA aggregates likely reduces the cytotoxicity of polyA. Mid-infrared free electron laser (FEL) successfully dissociated multiple aggregates.

Background: Identifying the minimal clinically important difference (MCID) contributes to the ability to determine the efficacy of physiotherapy interventions and make good clinical decisions.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to estimate the MCID for 6-minute walking distance (6MWD) among inpatients with subacute cardiac disease using multiple anchor-based methods.
Methods: This study was a secondary data analysis using only data from a multicenter longitudinal observational study in which 6MWD was measured at two time points.

Background: Lamins, located beneath the nuclear membrane, are involved in maintaining nuclear stiffness and morphology. The nuclei of tumor cells are enlarged in serous carcinoma, a histologic subtype of ovarian cancer that is notable for its poor prognosis. The present study investigated the association of lamin A, B1, and B2 expression with nuclear morphology and metastatic route in serous ovarian carcinoma.
