Although allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) is considered a potentially curative therapy for patients with multiple myeloma, the role of allo-HSCT remains unclear in the novel agent era. We conducted a retrospective study of 65 patients with multiple myeloma who underwent allo-HSCT at 19 institutions from 2009 to 2016. Patients received a median of 3 (range, 1 to 7) lines of prior therapy, including at least 1 novel agent, except for autologous HSCT.

Aims: The metabolism of the failing heart is characterized by an increase in glucose uptake with reduced fatty acid (FA) oxidation. We previously found that the genetic deletion of FA-binding protein-4 and -5 [double knockout (DKO)] induces an increased myocardial reliance on glucose with decreased FA uptake in mice. However, whether this fuel switch confers functional benefit during the hypertrophic response remains open to debate.

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to provide information regarding the knowledge of mechanical principles related to the load applied to the shoulder and elbow during the pitching motion. [Subjects and Methods] The three-dimensional kinematics of body segments were measured in 19 amateur baseball players with a VICON motion capture system. The correlation between maximum shoulder internal torque, maximum elbow varus torque, and simultaneous kinematic parameters including joint angular acceleration and ball acceleration was investigated.

Recent studies have revealed the clinical and biological features of stage I follicular lymphoma (FL), but information about patients with stage I FL who underwent total resection after tissue biopsy is limited. Among 305 FL patients diagnosed between 2001 and 2013, clinical stage I disease was observed in 36 patients. Of these, 18 patients underwent total resection after diagnostic tissue biopsy.

Structure of amyloid β (Aβ) fibrils is rigidly stacked by β-sheet conformation, and the fibril state of Aβ is profoundly related to pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Although mid-infrared light has been used for various biological researches, it has not yet been known whether the infrared light changes the fibril structure of Aβ. In this study, we tested the effect of irradiation of intense mid-infrared light from a free-electron laser (FEL) targeting the amide bond on the reduction of β-sheet content in Aβ fibrils.

Introduction: Bronchogenic cysts may rupture or become infected, and malignant degeneration may occur. Although various types of malignant degeneration have been described, only a few reports of mucoepidermoid carcinoma arising from a bronchogenic cyst have been published. We report such a case.

Programmed death-1 (PD-1, PDCD1) and cytotoxic T lymphocyte-associated antigen-4 (CTLA-4, CTLA4) play central roles in immune checkpoint pathways. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of PDCD1 and CTLA4 have been reported to be associated with susceptibility to some autoimmune diseases. However, the potential association between SNPs in these immune checkpoint genes and risk of chronic immune thrombocytopenia (cITP) remain controversial and obscure.

Purpose: Although acute bouts of exercise reportedly have beneficial effects on executive function, inactive people may find it difficult to start exercising. In this study, we focused on housework activities (HAs) that generate a sense of accomplishment and require a mild intensity of physical activity. We examined the impact of an acute bout of HA on executive function and oxygenated hemoglobin (oxy-Hb) flow to related cortical regions.

Background Dressing performance relates strongly with balance function, and it is mainly influenced by the motor functions of the affected and unaffected lower extremity and trunk function in stroke patients. For the remedial approach to be effective, ascertaining the degree of function needed in the affected and unaffected lower extremities and trunk to achieve balance function requisite for dressing is necessary. Objectives This study aimed to elucidate standards of lower extremity and trunk function necessary for stroke patients to gain balance requisite for dressing.

Seaweed has been considered an indigestible food. Fucoidan, which is found abundantly in seaweed, especially in Cladosiphon okamuranus (Okinawa mozuku), has a high molecular weight and has been long believed to be hardly absorbed in the human digestive system due to a lack of certain digestive enzymes. We previously reported that fucoidan can be detected in serum and urine after oral intake of purified fucoidan in humans and rats.

A survey solicited demographic characteristics, FV gardening information, and health-related factors [BMI, self-rated health status, FV intake, physical activity (PA), and perceived neighborhood social cohesion (PNSC)].

Purpose: Thymidine-dependent small-colony variants (TD-SCVs) are difficult to detect or test for antimicrobial susceptibility. We investigated the characteristics of clonal TD-SCVs of Escherichia coli, both with and without blaCTX-M-3, isolated from a patient.
Methodology: Mutation in the thyA gene was analysed by sequencing, and morphological abnormalities in the colonies and cells of the isolates were examined.

In secondary lymphoid organs, development and homeostasis of stromal cells such as podoplanin (Pdpn)-positive fibroblastic reticular cells (FRCs) are regulated by hematopoietic cells, but the cellular and molecular mechanisms of such regulation have remained unclear. Here we show that ablation of either signal regulatory protein α (SIRPα), an Ig superfamily protein, or its ligand CD47 in conventional dendritic cells (cDCs) markedly reduced the number of CD4 cDCs as well as that of Pdpn FRCs and T cells in the adult mouse spleen. Such ablation also impaired the survival of FRCs as well as the production by CD4 cDCs of tumor necrosis factor receptor (TNFR) ligands, including TNF-α, which was shown to promote the proliferation and survival of Pdpn FRCs.

Background: Overwork, fatigue, and sleep deprivation due to night duty are likely to be detrimental to the performance of medical residents and can consequently affect patient safety.
Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the possibility of deterioration of cerebral function of sleep-deprived, fatigued residents using neuroimaging techniques.
Design: Six medical residents were instructed to draw blood from artificial vessels installed on the arm of a normal cooperator.

Background: Myocardial contractile dysfunction in sepsis has been attributed mainly to increased inflammatory cytokines, insulin resistance, and impaired oxidative phosphorylation of fatty acids (FAs). However, precise molecular mechanisms underlying the cardiac dysfunction in sepsis remain to be determined. We previously reported major shift in myocardial energy substrates from FAs to glucose, and increased hepatic ketogenesis in mice lacking fatty acid-binding protein 4 (FABP4) and FABP5 (DKO).

Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in interleukin 17 (IL17A) and IL-23 receptor (IL23R) are involved in the pathogenesis of many cancers and autoimmune diseases. We investigated the influence of IL17A and IL23R SNPs on the risk of developing multiple myeloma (MM) and its clinical features. We obtained genomic DNA from 120 patients with MM and 201 healthy controls and detected IL17A -197 G/A (rs2275913) and IL23R H3Q (rs1884444) genotypes using the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism method.

Although population-based cancer registries have reported lower incidence of Waldenstrӧm macroglobulinemia (WM) in East Asia than in Western countries, previous retrospective analyses have found the clinical features of WM to be similar in these two populations. To clarify the characteristics of Japanese WM patients, we retrospectively analyzed clinical and laboratory characteristics, treatments, outcomes, and prognostic factors in 93 patients with WM. Based on the Second International Workshop on WM (IWWM-2) criteria, symptomatic WM was found in 73 (78.

A hemin-requiring Pseudomonas aeruginosa small-colony variant (SCV) was isolated from the blood of an octogenarian male-patient with double pneumonitis. The isolate was capable of growing on both sheep blood and chocolate agars but not on MacConkey agars without blood ingredient. Furthermore, the isolate revealed to grow only around the X-factor impregnated discs when examined using the X and V disc strips.
