Background: Tumor invasion is the most significant prognostic factor in ampullary cancer and is thus a crucial factor in decision making for treatment. Endoscopic ultrasound can be performed to evaluate tumor invasion, but its diagnostic accuracy varies depending on the endoscopist. This study aimed to assess the usefulness of fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) for preoperatively predicting tumor invasion in ampullary cancer.

This study was conducted to clarify the relationship between thyroid function and gastrointestinal motility. We established an experimental configuration in which the feedback of thyroid function was completely removed using conscious dogs. With hypothyroidism, time of phase I of interdigestive migrating contractions (IMC) was longer, time of phase II and phase III was significantly shortened, and both the continuous time of strong tetanic contraction at antrum and 10-h frequency of phase III counted from the first IMC after meal significantly decreased.

Background: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a rare malignant tumor involving mostly the head and neck region, and frequently the salivary glands. The development of lung metastasis after treatment of the primary tumor is a common occurrence in ACC. Although lung metastases show a slow rate of growth, approximately 10% of patients die from distant metastases.

Management of patients with bone sarcoma who are unsuitable for surgery is challenging. We aimed to analyze the clinical outcomes among such patients who were treated with carbon ion radiotherapy (C-ion RT). We reviewed the medical records of the patients treated with C-ion RT between April 2011 and February 2019 and analyzed the data of 53 patients.

It is difficult to treat patients with an inoperable sarcoma adjacent to the gastrointestinal (GI) tract using carbon ion radiotherapy (C-ion RT), owing to the possible development of serious GI toxicities. In such cases, spacer placement may be useful in physically separating the tumor and the GI tract. We aimed to evaluate the usefulness of spacer placement by conducting a simulation study of dosimetric comparison in a patient with sacral chordoma adjacent to the rectum treated with C-ion RT.

In this phase II study, we investigated the efficacy and safety profiles of FTD/TPI in mCRC according to RAS mutation status.
Patients And Methods: Eligible patients were mCRC refractory or intolerant to all standard therapies other than FTD/TPI and regorafenib.

Background: Patients with stage IV gastric cancer have a poor prognosis despite improvements in intensive treatment regimens, including chemotherapy. Recently, conversion surgery has received much attention as it can provide long-term survival in stage IV gastric cancer patients who are responsive to chemotherapy. Herein, we describe the case of a patient who underwent conversion surgery for metastatic gastric cancer that was performed over 2 years after an initial diagnosis of cancer of unknown primary (CUP) with metastasis of the cervical lymph nodes and the ovary.

The aim of this study was to compare the estimated public medical care cost of measures to address metallic dental restorations (MDRs) for head and neck radiotherapy using high-energy mega-voltage X-rays. This was considered a first step to clarify which MDR measure was more cost-effective. We estimated the medical care cost of radiotherapy for two representative MDR measures: (i) with MDR removal or (ii) without MDR removal (non-MDR removal) using magnetic resonance imaging and a spacer.

Purpose: It remains controversial whether primary tumor resection (PTR) before chemotherapy improves survival in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) with asymptomatic primary tumor and synchronous unresectable metastases.
Patients And Methods: This randomized phase III study investigated the superiority of PTR followed by chemotherapy versus chemotherapy alone in relation to overall survival (OS) in patients with unresectable stage IV asymptomatic CRC and three or fewer unresectable metastatic diseases confined to the liver, lungs, distant lymph nodes, or peritoneum. Chemotherapy regimens of either mFOLFOX6 plus bevacizumab or CapeOX plus bevacizumab were decided before study entry.

The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility of planning dose-volume histogram (DVH) parameters in computed tomography-based 3D image-guided brachytherapy for locally advanced cervical cancer. In a prospective multi-institutional study, 60 patients with stage IIA2-IVA cervical cancer from eight institutions were treated with external beam radiotherapy using central shielding and intracavitary or hybrid (combined intracavitary/interstitial) brachytherapy (HBT). The dose constraints were set as a cumulative linear quadratic equivalent dose (EQD2) of at least 60 Gy for high-risk clinical target volume (HR-CTV) D90, D2cc ≤ 75 Gy for rectum, D2cc ≤ 90 Gy for bladder and D2cc ≤ 75 Gy for sigmoid.

Background: Neoadjuvant systemic therapy (NST) induces tumor shrinkage and boosts the chance of breast-conserving thearpy (BCT) in patients with breast cancer. However, only a few trials have evaluated the effect of NST in conversion from BCT ineligibility to BCT eligibility in HER2-positive breast cancer.
Methods: We conducted the surgical sub-study of a phase II randomized trial, which compared standard neoadjuvant treatment or an experimental treatment modified according to the interim Ki-67 evaluation in women with stage II or III HER2-positive breast cancer.

Background: The bioavailability of lapatinib is affected by food, even following the 1 hour fast recommended by the package insert. We hypothesized that overnight fasting would minimize food-drug interactions. Here, we investigated if lapatinib administration timing is associated with its tolerability, efficacy, and pharmacokinetics.
