Background: Enzalutamide (ENZ) is used in the treatment of patients with castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC). The quality of life (QoL) of CRPC patients during ENZ treatment is very important, but predictive markers of QoL have not been identified. We investigated the relationship between the serum testosterone (T) level before ENZ treatment and QoL changes in CRPC patients.

Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a myeloproliferative disorder caused by the BCR-ABL1 tyrosine kinase. Although ABL1-specific tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) including nilotinib have dramatically improved the prognosis of patients with CML, the TKI efficacy depends on the individual patient. In this work, we found that the patients with different nilotinib responses can be classified by using the estimated parameters of our simple dynamical model with two common laboratory findings.

Atypical lymphoproliferative disorders (LPDs) related with autoimmune disease (AID) show marked clinicopathological diversity, which are defined as three distinct clinicopathological subtypes such as those resembling Castleman disease (CD), atypical paracortical hyperplasia with lymphoid follicles (APHLF), and atypical lymphoplasmacytic and immunoblastic proliferation (ALPIB). We studied excisional biopsy specimens from 31 patients with atypical LPDs associated with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and Sjögren syndrome (SjS). The lesions in these 31 cases were classified into 6 (19.

High-dose-rate brachytherapy by remote afterloading is now performed under three-dimensional image guidance by CT or MRI. Three-dimensional image-guided brachytherapy in cervical cancer disclosed that the traditional intracavitary brachytherapy by Manchester method cannot deliver an adequate dose to the large tumor with resulting local recurrence. To improve the local control rate, combined interstitial and intracavitary (hybrid) brachytherapy can increase the dose to the large parametrial involvement without increasing the dose to the rectum and bladder.

Pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (PAP) is a rare disease characterized by the abnormal accumulation of surfactant-derived substances in the lungs. To the best of our knowledge, the successful treatment of metastatic renal cell carcinoma in patients with PAP has not been reported. Here, we describe such treatment of a patient via avelumab plus axitinib therapy.

CD5-positive diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (CD5+ DLBCL) is characterized by poor prognosis and a high frequency of central nervous system relapse after standard immunochemotherapy. We conducted a phase II study to investigate the efficacy and safety of dose-adjusted (DA)- EPOCH-R (etoposide, prednisone, vincristine, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, and rituximab) combined with high-dose methotrexate (HD-MTX) in newly diagnosed patients with CD5+ DLBCL. Previously untreated patients with stage II to IV CD5+ DLBCL according to the 2008 World Health Organization classification were eligible.

For patients who have chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), one of the primary treatment options is administration of nilotinib 300 mg twice daily (BID). In previous studies which compared outcomes associated with nilotinib or imatinib treatment, nilotinib achieved a higher rate of deep molecular response (MR). We conducted a phase II, open-label, multicenter study to investigate an intrapatient nilotinib dose-escalation strategy for patients with newly diagnosed chronic-phase (CP) CML based on early MR achievement.

(Objective) We retrospectively evaluated the clinical efficacy and safety of abiraterone acetate (AA) in patients with castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC). (Methods) We analyzed the clinical records of 50 patients who had received AA in Gunma Cancer Center between October 2014 and June 2017. We assessed the response of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) to AA, and analyzed the association between overall survival and various parameters, including the types of primary hormonal therapy, PSA level, Gleason score, time to CRPC, prior treatment with enzalutamide (Enz) and docetaxel, and sites of metastases.

In the era of novel therapeutic agents for multiple myeloma (MM), both the significance of achieving the plateau phase and the efficacy of subsequent maintenance therapy remain unclear. In the present study, we evaluated the efficacy and safety of bortezomib maintenance therapy (biweekly for 1 year) in transplant-ineligible MM patients who plateaued after bortezomib-based induction therapy. Of 36 evaluable patients, the overall response rate during induction therapy was 61%, with a stringent complete response in 6%, a complete response in 6%, a very good partial response in 17%, and a partial response in 33%.

Background: Some reports have highlighted the relationship between heart rate variability (HRV) and the degree of postoperative pain experienced. This study retrospectively examined whether differences in heart rate variability may be related to the appearance of postoperative pain in patients undergoing breast cancer surgery.
Findings: We retrospectively analyzed 20 postoperative patients who had no pain immediately upon admission to the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU), divided into two groups: group A ( = 16) had no pain on admission to PACU, remaining pain free upon discharge (12 h after surgery); group B ( = 4) comprised patients with no pain on admission to PACU but who experienced increasing pain requiring intervention in PACU 1 h after surgery.

Objective: Several reports have shown the negligible adverse effects of low-dose remifentanil on the autonomic nervous system. We propose that the administration of low-dose remifentanil would be beneficial without adverse respiratory and hemodynamic effects. This study aimed to examine the effects of low-dose remifentanil on postoperative pain relief and heart rate variability (HRV) after surgery.

The aim of this randomized phase II study was to improve the treatment delays and discontinuations associated with bendamustine use by comparing the effect of Benda-14 (intravenous bendamustine, 120 mg/m on days 1 and 15, repeated every 4 weeks for a total of 6 cycles) with those of the standard treatment in relapsed indolent lymphoma and/or mantle cell lymphoma. Forty-six patients were randomly assigned to the treatments from September 2012 to February 2016. Treatment accomplishment rate and median relative dose intensity were similar in both arms: 38 and 63.

Although population-based cancer registries have reported lower incidence of Waldenstrӧm macroglobulinemia (WM) in East Asia than in Western countries, previous retrospective analyses have found the clinical features of WM to be similar in these two populations. To clarify the characteristics of Japanese WM patients, we retrospectively analyzed clinical and laboratory characteristics, treatments, outcomes, and prognostic factors in 93 patients with WM. Based on the Second International Workshop on WM (IWWM-2) criteria, symptomatic WM was found in 73 (78.
