Background/objectives: Tumor microenvironmental hypoxia is an established hallmark of solid tumors. It significantly contributes to tumor aggressiveness and therapy resistance and has been reported to affect the balance of activating/inhibitory surface receptors' expression and activity on NK cells. In the current study, we investigated the impact of hypoxia on the surface expression of Siglec-7 and Siglec-9 (Sig-7/9) and their ligands in NK cells and tumor target cells.

The correlation between epigenetic alterations and the pathophysiology of human infertility is progressively being elucidated with the discovery of an increasing number of target genes that exhibit altered expression patterns linked to reproductive abnormalities. Several genes and molecules are emerging as important for the future management of human infertility. In men, microRNAs (miRNAs) like miR-34c, miR-34b, and miR-122 regulate apoptosis, sperm production, and germ cell survival, while other factors, such as miR-449 and sirtuin 1 (SIRT1), influence testicular health, oxidative stress, and mitochondrial function.

Article Synopsis
  • Healthcare workers in the UAE are at a higher risk for work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSD) due to their profession, highlighting the importance of ergonomic awareness and practices for safety and well-being in the workplace.
  • A study of 307 healthcare workers revealed that while 89.3% had good ergonomic awareness, only 63.5% demonstrated effective ergonomic practices, and an alarming 89.6% reported experiencing musculoskeletal disorders, primarily in the lower back, neck, and shoulders.
  • The findings indicated significant relationships between education level and ergonomic awareness, age and years of experience with ergonomic practices, and a connection between musculoskeletal disorders and one's awareness of ergonomic practices.

Background: Nurses occupy a pivotal role in the provision of palliative care, acting as frontline providers who address the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs of patients. The complexities inherent in palliative care frequently give rise to ethical dilemmas that significantly impact nurses' decision-making and patient interactions. It is therefore essential to gain an understanding of nurses' perceptions of ethical issues, quality of life, and adherence to patient rights in order to enhance the care delivered in these settings.

Reproductomics: Exploring the Applications and Advancements of Computational Tools.

Physiol Res

November 2024

Department of Biomedical Sciences, College of Medicine, Gulf Medical University, Ajman, UAE; Department of Life Science and Bioinformatics, Assam University, Silchar, India.

Over recent decades, advancements in omics technologies, such as proteomics, genomics, epigenomics, metabolomics, transcriptomics, and microbiomics, have significantly enhanced our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying various physiological and pathological processes. Nonetheless, the analysis and interpretation of vast omics data concerning reproductive diseases are complicated by the cyclic regulation of hormones and multiple other factors, which, in conjunction with a genetic makeup of an individual, lead to diverse biological responses. Reproductomics investigates the interplay between a hormonal regulation of an individual, environmental factors, genetic predisposition (DNA composition and epigenome), health effects, and resulting biological outcomes.
