Background: Nurses are vital in identifying and preventive pressure injuries (PIs) in hospitalized patients undergoing open heart surgery. Interventions to prevent PIs are crucial for every critical patient, and it's essential to recognize that preventing PIs involves a complex intervention.

Aim: To examine the nursing interventions for the prevention of PI in patients with open heart surgery.

Bivalirudin and heparin are the principal anticoagulants used during primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for patients experiencing ST-elevation myocardial infarctions. Based on previous meta-analyses, bivalirudin improves 30-day mortality rates compared with heparin, especially when vascular access is predominantly femoral. However, no meta-analysis has yet reported whether this mortality benefit with bivalirudin persists beyond 30 days.

Background: Whether percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) improves clinical outcomes in patients with chronic angina and stable coronary artery disease (CAD) has been a continuing area of investigation for more than two decades. The recently reported results of the International Study of Comparative Health Effectiveness with Medical and Invasive Approaches, the largest prospective trial of optimal medical therapy (OMT) with or without myocardial revascularization, provides a unique opportunity to determine whether there is an incremental benefit of revascularization in stable CAD patients.

Methods: Scientific databases and websites were searched to find randomized clinical trials (RCTs).

Article Synopsis
  • Statin therapy is the standard treatment for high cholesterol, but many patients either don't reach their LDL targets or can't tolerate statins at all; inclisiran offers a new option.
  • Inclisiran, a small interfering RNA that requires only two injections per year, has shown to significantly reduce LDL cholesterol levels by 51% and overall cholesterol by various amounts in clinical trials involving 3,660 patients.
  • The treatment also correlated with a 24% reduction in major adverse cardiovascular events, with no serious safety concerns, though mild injection site reactions were more common.

Several clinical trials have shown that complete revascularization (CR) lowers the risks of revascularization and nonfatal myocardial infarction (MI) in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and multivessel coronary artery disease compared with infarct-related artery-only revascularization (IRA-OR). However, individual trials have been underpowered for hard outcomes such as cardiovascular (CV) mortality. Therefore, we conducted an updated meta-analysis representing the largest sample size to date inclusive of contemporary studies comparing CR versus IRA-OR.

Background: The role of aspirin for primary prevention of cardiovascular diseases remains controversial, particularly in the context of contemporary aggressive preventive strategies.

Methods: Relevant randomized clinical trials were included, and risk ratios (RRs) were calculated using random-effects models. Additional moderator analyses were performed to compare the pooled treatment effects from recent trials (those reported after the guidelines of the National Cholesterol Education Program Third Adult Treatment Panel were published in 2001; thus, conducted on the background of contemporary preventive strategies) to the results of older trials.

Aim: The incidence of urinary tract infection (UTI) in pregnant women may vary from 5-10% and depends on parity, race, socioeconomic status and anatomical and functional changes in pregnancy. In Mexico, preterm birth accounts for 75% of perinatal deaths and 50% of the neurological sequelae attributable directly to prematurity. The objective of the present study is to describe maternal and perinatal complications in pregnant women with UTI caused by Escherichia coli and to find out the antimicrobial susceptibility pattern.

Introduction: Cleft lip and palate, the most common developmental deformity, is seen worldwide and the etiology involves a combination of genetic and environmental factors. The purpose of this study was to determine the maternal risk factors associated with the development of cleft lip and cleft palate.

The Clinical Assessment Program and Teflaro(®) Utilization Registry (CAPTURE) is a multicenter study evaluating the clinical use of ceftaroline fosamil in patients with community-acquired bacterial pneumonia (CABP) or acute bacterial skin and skin structure infection. Data were collected between August 2011 and February 2013, from 398 evaluable patients receiving treatment at 33 sites in the USA. This manuscript presents data collected from patients with CABP who received care in an intensive care unit (ICU) or in general medical wards (35% and 64% of evaluable patients, respectively).

Background: The Clinical Assessment Program and Teflaro® Utilization Registry is designed to collect information on the clinical use of ceftaroline fosamil in the Unites States. This report presents data on the treatment of patients with bacteremia (SAB) secondary to acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (ABSSSIs) or community-acquired bacterial pneumonia (CABP).

Methods: Patients diagnosed with ABSSSI or CABP were identified through sequential review of randomly ordered charts generated from pharmacy listings from August 2011 to February 2013.

Although there is evidence to suggest that breast self-examination (BSE) aids in the early detection of breast cancer, the underuse of this prevention behavior continues to exist. The purpose of this study was to explore the personal behaviors and professional practices of nurses in the use of BSE and to discuss implications for the advanced practice nurse (APN). The sample (N = 300) consisted of nurses and student nurses.

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) or Werdnig-Hoffmann disease is the second most common neuromuscular disease, with 25% of cases presenting in infancy. Deletions in the survival motor neuron gene are believed responsible for autosomal-recessive SMA. SMA affects about 1 in 10,000 births.
