Trends and Patterns of HIV Transmitted Drug Resistance in China From 2018 to 2023.

J Infect Dis

December 2024

Institute for HIV/AIDS and STD Prevention and Control, Beijing Center for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC), Beijing Academy of Preventive Medicine, Beijing.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined drug resistance in HIV among newly diagnosed individuals in China from 2018 to 2023 to adapt treatment guidelines.
  • Out of over 22,000 individuals, 4.36% had at least one transmitted drug resistance (TDR) mutation, with the most common being linked to nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors.
  • The prevalence of TDR mutations notably increased from 4.05% to 5.39% over the study years, supporting the ongoing use of NNRTI-based treatment regimens for HIV.

Article Synopsis
  • China adopted the WHO's "treat all" policy in 2016, aiming to improve HIV care through the 95-95-95 targets, which include diagnosing 95% of HIV positive individuals, getting 95% of those diagnosed on treatment, and achieving viral suppression in 95% of treated individuals.
  • Data from 2004 to 2023 showed significant advancements in these targets, correlating with a drop in new HIV infections, as evidenced by a dip in clustering frequency and a peak in cases documented in 2014.
  • The study concludes that while progress has been made, China needs to focus on increasing efforts in the first "95" target to further reduce HIV transmission rates and improve overall outcomes.

Background: The Sirtuins (SIRT) family plays a key role in the diagnosis and treatment of many renal diseases, but no studies have been reported in acute rejection of kidney transplantation. The aim of this study was to explore the diagnostic value of SIRT family change characteristics in acute rejection of kidney transplantation.

Methods: We first explored the SIRT family expression profile in renal tissues using the HPA database; subsequently, we explored the potential biological functions and mechanistic changes during acute rejection of kidney transplantation by GSEA enrichment analysis.

Recent evidence suggests that immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), a common bleeding disorder, is linked to an imbalance in macrophage polarization and impaired bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs). However, the relationship between macrophage polarization imbalance and functional defects in BMSCs, as well as the involvement of associated molecules in BMSCs' defects, is not well understood. This study aimed to investigate the regulatory effects of high mobility group protein 1 (HMGB1) on the physiological functions of BMSCs, specifically in relation to macrophage polarization imbalance.

Background: Facial aging (FA) is a complex process influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. Gut microbiota (GM), gut microbiota metabolic pathways (GMMPs), and blood metabolites (BMs) have been implicated in the regulation of FA, but the causal and mediating effects of these factors remain unclear.

Methods: We used summary-level data from genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of 16S rRNA gene sequencing data for GM (n = 18 340), GWAS of GMMPs (n = 7738), BMs (n = 24 925), and GWAS of FA (n = 423 999).

Background: In the ongoing battle against breast cancer, a leading cause of cancer-related mortality among women globally, the urgent need for innovative prognostic markers and therapeutic targets is undeniable. This study pioneers an advanced methodology by integrating machine learning techniques to unveil a vascular mimicry signature, offering predictive insights into breast cancer outcomes. Vascular mimicry refers to the phenomenon where cancer cells mimic blood vessel formation absent of endothelial cells, a trait associated with heightened tumor aggression and diminished response to conventional treatments.

Consideration of hormonal changes for orthodontic treatment during pregnancy and lactation - a review.

Reprod Biol Endocrinol

August 2024

Department of Orthodontics II, Affiliated Stomatological Hospital of Zunyi Medical University, No.143 Dalian Road, Huichuan District, Zunyi, Guizhou Province, 563000, China.

Article Synopsis
  • * Key hormones like estrogen, progesterone, and others are essential for bone remodeling and can affect how the body responds to dental issues, especially during orthodontic treatment.
  • * Despite potential stress responses from applying orthodontic forces, studies suggest that these hormonal changes do not negatively impact the health of the mother or fetus, highlighting the need for tailored orthodontic care.

tsRNA-GlyGCC promotes colorectal cancer progression and 5-FU resistance by regulating SPIB.

J Exp Clin Cancer Res

August 2024

State Key Laboratory of Oncology in South China, Guangdong Provincial Clinical Research Center for Cancer, Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center, 651 Dongfeng East Road, Guangzhou, Guangdong, 510060, China.

Background: tRNA-derived small RNAs (tsRNAs) are newly discovered non-coding RNA, which are generated from tRNAs and are reported to participate in several biological processes in diseases, especially cancer; however, the mechanism of tsRNA involvement in colorectal cancer (CRC) and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) is still unclear.

Methods: RNA sequencing was performed to identify differential expression of tsRNAs in CRC tissues. CCK8, colony formation, transwell assays, and tumor sphere assays were used to investigate the role of tsRNA-GlyGCC in 5-FU resistance in CRC.

Background: Estimated pulse wave velocity (ePWV), which measures vascular aging, is an independent predictor of cardiovascular death. Nevertheless, the relationship between ePWV and all-cause mortality among patients suffering from non-traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhages (NSAH) remains obscure. Consequently, the objective of this study is to ascertain whether ePWV exerts influence on the prognosis of individuals afflicted with NSAH.

YTHDF3 Regulates the Degradation and Stability of m6A-Enriched Transcripts to Facilitate the Progression of Castration-Resistant Prostate Cancer.

J Pineal Res

August 2024

Key Laboratory of Endemic and Ethnic Diseases, Ministry of Education, Key Laboratory of Medical Molecular Biology of Guizhou Province, School of Basic Medical Science, Guizhou Medical University, Guiyang, Guizhou, China.

RNA N6-methyladenosine (m6A) readers mediate cancer progression. However, the functional role and potential mechanisms of the m6A readers in prostate cancer tumorigenicity remain to be elucidated. In this study, we demonstrate that YTHDF3 expression is elevated in castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) and positively correlated to high grade, bone metastasis and poor survival.

Avian influenza viruses (AIVs) are the origin of multiple mammal influenza viruses. The genetic determinants of AIVs adapted to humans have been widely elucidated, however, the molecular mechanism of cross-species transmission and adaptation of AIVs to canines are still poorly understood. In this study, two H3N2 influenza viruses isolated from a live poultry market (A/environment/Guangxi/13431/2018, GX13431) and a swab sample from a canine (A/canine/Guangdong/0601/2019, GD0601) were used to investigate the possible molecular basis that determined H3N2 AIV adapting to canine.

Central and systemic inflammation play pivotal roles in epileptogenesis and proepileptogenesis in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). The interplay between peripheral CD4 T cells and central microglia orchestrates the "systemic-central" immune response in TLE. However, the precise molecular mechanisms linking central and systemic inflammation in TLE remain unknown.
