Biodiesel is one of the main biofuels used to replace fossil resources, and is mainly produced from esterification and transesterification of fatty acids and oils catalyzed by acids, bases or enzymes. Among the existing catalysts, metal oxides and their derivatives play an important role because of their high catalytic activity and low cost. ZnO is a metal oxide and its related nanomaterials are easy to prepare, which gives ZnO superior reactivity and extensive applications.

Carbon dioxide is an ideal raw material for the synthesis of complex organic compounds because of its rich, non-toxic, and good physical properties. It is of great significance to transform CO into valuable fine chemicals and develop a green sustainable cycle of carbon surplus. Based on hydrosilane as a reducing agent, this work summarizes the recent applications of reductive amidation of CO using different catalysts such as organocatalysts, ionic liquids (ILs), salts, transition metal complexes, and solvents.

Selective hydrogenation of unsaturated compounds is mainly carried out by using high-pressure hydrogen in the presence of a precious or transition metal catalyst. Here, we describe a benign approach to efficiently catalyze the hydrogenation of furfural (FUR) to furfuryl alcohol (FFA) over commercially available cesium carbonate using nontoxic and cheap polymethylhydrosiloxane (PMHS) as hydrogen source. Good to excellent FFA yields (≥90%) could be obtained at 25-80 °C by appropriate control of the catalyst dosage, reaction time, and the hydride amount.

Solid acid-catalyzed sugar degradation has been considered to be an efficient approach to synthesize alkyl levulinates (which can be used as fuel additives and surfactants). However, those catalytic processes typically involve harsh reaction conditions and high cost for catalyst preparation. We prepared a series of phosphotungstic acid organic hybrids by a simple solvothermal method, and used them as heterogeneous catalysts for the selective degradation of fructose to methyl levulinate (ML) in methanol with high efficiency under mild reaction conditions.
