Ferroptosis, characterized by elevated iron levels and lipid peroxidation (LPO), is a recently identified regulatory mechanism of cell death. Its substantial involvement in ischemic tissue injury, neurodegenerative disorders, and cancer positions ferroptosis inhibition as a promising strategy for managing these diverse diseases. In this study, we introduce curcumin-polydopamine nanoparticles (Cur-PDA NPs) as an innovative ferroptosis inhibitor.

Key Laboratory of Macrocyclic and Supramolecular Chemistry of Guizhou Province, Institute of Applied Chemistry, Guizhou University Guiyang 550025 China

Cucurbit[]urils (Q[]s) are a class of supramolecular host compounds with hydrophilic carbonyl ports and hydrophobic cavities, which can selectively form host-guest inclusion complexes with guest molecules to change the properties of guest molecules. In this paper, tetramethyl cucurbit[6]uril (TMeQ[6]) was used as the host and three 2-heterocyclic substituted benzimidazole derivatives as the guests, and their modes of interaction were investigated using X-ray crystallography, H NMR spectrometry, and other analytical techniques. The results showed that TMeQ[6] formed a 1 : 1 host-guest inclusion complex with three guest molecules, and the binding process between them was mainly enthalpy-driven.

The effects of oenothein B(OEB) on the proliferation, apoptosis, invasion, and migration of breast cancer MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cells were investigated by cell culture in vitro, network pharmacology, and molecular docking. In vitro cell experiments revealed that OEB inhibited the proliferation and colony formation ability, and promoted the apoptosis and formation of apoptotic bodies in breast cancer cells, as well as inhibited the invasion and migration of breast cancer cells. The targets of OEB were obtained using SwissTargetPrediction database and breast cancer targets were obtained from GeneCards.

This study aimed to observe the effect of terpinen-4-ol(T4O) on the proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells(VSMCs) exposed to high glucose(HG) and reveal the mechanism via the Krüppel-like factor 4(KLF4)/nuclear factor kappaB(NF-κB) signaling pathway. The VSMCs were first incubated with T4O for 2 h and then cultured with HG for 48 h to establish the model of inflammatory injury. The proliferation, cell cycle, and migration rate of VSMCs were examined by MTT method, flow cytometry, and wound healing assay, respectively.

Protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO) is a key enzyme in chlorophyll and heme biosynthesis, and the development of its inhibitors is of great importance both in the pharmaceutical and pesticide industries. However, the currently developed PPO inhibitors have insignificant bio-selectivity and have a serious impact on non-target organisms. In this study, a docking-based virtual screening approach combined with bio-activity testing was used to obtain novel selective inhibitors of PPO.

Acute ischemic stroke (AIS) is a syndrome characterized by high morbidity, prevalence, mortality, recurrence and disability. The longer the delay before proper treatment of a stroke, the greater the likelihood of brain damage and disability. Computed tomography and nuclear magnetic resonance are the primary choices for fast diagnosis of AIS in the early stage, which can provide certain information about infarction location and degree, and even the vascular distribution of lesions responsible for strokes.

The restricted adhesion of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells by stepped structures on surfaces of hydroxyapatite.

RSC Adv

April 2022

Key Laboratory of Biology and Medical Engineering/Immune Cells and Antibody Engineering Research Center of Guizhou Province, School of Biology and Engineering, Guizhou Medical University Guiyang 550025 P. R. China

Currently, many researches have developed several strategies to design the surface structures of hydroxyapatite (HA), and have proved that the surface structures are pivotal in guiding the adhesion of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) as well as subsequent cellular behaviours. Most of these strategies, such as altering roughness and constructing surface patterning of HA, involve the construction of geometric topographies at the micro/nanoscale. However, besides geometric topographies, crystal defects are also important characteristics of surface structures and would alter many local physicochemical properties, which is critical for contact between cells and bioceramic surfaces.

Purpose: It has been established in previous studies that TANK-binding kinase 1 (TBK1) is upregulated in malignant tumors and is therefore associated with poor prognosis. However, the role of TBK1 in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the expression levels and the function of TBK1 in AML.

The excessive production and deposition of amyloid-β (Aβ) is one of the most important etiologies of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The interaction between Aβ and metal ions produces aberrant reactive oxygen species (ROS), which induce oxidative stress and accelerate the progression of AD. To reduce Aβ plaques and ROS to maintain their homeostasis is an emerging and ingenious strategy for effective treatment of AD.
