[Diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis vaccine mortality].

Ugeskr Laeger

December 2024

Mikkelborg Alle, Hørsholm.

Although the diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (DTP) vaccine is lifesaving through decades, it has been voiced that the vaccine is associated with 50% increase in mortality, an alleged negative non-specific vaccine effect prone to girls. Post hoc analyses of historical observational data supporting the hypothesis of the DTP vaccine having detrimental effects have never been replicated in low- or high-income countries. An RCT in Guinea-Bissau found fewer deaths with DTP vaccine than without.

Background: Arthropod vectors feeding on the blood of individuals treated with ivermectin have substantially increased mortality. Whether this effect will translate into a useful tool for reducing malaria burden at scale is not clear. Our trial aimed to assess whether using ivermectin as an adjunct to mass drug administration (MDA) with dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine would further reduce malaria prevalence.

Article Synopsis
  • Accurately measuring body composition is critical for disease prevention, especially in low-income regions where healthcare resources are limited; inexpensive devices need validation against the gold standard, DEXA, which isn't available in these areas.
  • This study compares two affordable bioelectrical impedance devices, the Tanita® BC-545 and Omron Karada Scan BF511, in adult volunteers from sports facilities in Guinea-Bissau to determine their measurement agreement.
  • Results show high correlation in measurements between the two devices, suggesting that in resource-limited settings, the Omron can effectively substitute more costly methods for assessing body composition.

Contradictory mortality results in early 2-dose measles vaccine trials: interactions with oral polio vaccine may explain differences.

Int J Infect Dis

November 2024

Bandim Health Project, Indepth Network, Bissau, Guinea-Bissau; OPEN, Odense Patient Data Explorative Network, Institute of Clinical Research, Odense University Hospital/University of Southern Denmark, Odense, Denmark; Danish Institute for Advanced Study, University of Southern Denmark, Odense, Denmark.

Objectives: Between 2003 and 2019, three trials (randomised controlled trials [RCTs]) in Guinea-Bissau randomised infants to an early 2-dose measles vaccine (MV) schedule at 4 and 9 months vs standard MV at 9 months. The RCTs produced contradictory mortality results; the effect being beneficial in the 2-dose group in the first but tending to have higher mortality in the last two RCTs. We hypothesised that increased frequency of campaigns with oral polio vaccine (C-OPV) explained the pattern.
