Background: Pregnancy termination or induced abortion is not decriminalized, and access to safe abortion services is largely unavailable in Papua New Guinea (PNG). However, the practice is common throughout the country. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence and determine factors associated with pregnancy termination among married women aged 15-49 years in PNG.

Influenza B viruses (IBVs) primarily infect humans and are a common cause of respiratory infections in humans. Here, to systematically analyze the antigenicity of the IBVs Hemagglutinin (HA) protein, 31 B/Victoria and 19 B/Yamagata representative circulating strains were selected from Global Initiative of Sharing All Influenza Data (GISAID), and pseudotyped viruses were constructed with the vesicular stomatitis virus system. Guinea pigs were immunized with three doses of vaccines (one dose of DNA vaccines following two doses of pseudotyped virus vaccines) of the seven IBV vaccine strains, and neutralizing antibodies against the pseudotyped viruses were tested.

Background: Worldwide, 10% of postpartum women experience postpartum depression, which can lead to diverse sequalae at individual, family, and societal levels. In sub-Saharan Africa, it is estimated that 17% of women experience depression in the postpartum period, which could be an underestimate as 48% of women in the region do not receive postnatal care (81% in Ethiopia and 51% in Guinea) and a large share of postpartum depression remains undiagnosed and untreated as a result. Globally, despite a critical evidence gap, there are growing reports of postpartum depression among women mistreated (disrespected and abused) during childbirth in health facilities, making a strong case to examine the association between mistreatment and postpartum depression.

Background: The incidence of comorbid depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms is higher in snakebite victims. However, the present state and contributing factors of depression and PTSD among Chinese snakebite victims remain unclear.
Methods: A representative sample of 6837 snakebite victims were assessed with the Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Checklist (Civilian Version) and The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale.

Purpose: Autophagy dysregulation triggers extracellular matrix remodeling via changes in cellular collagen levels and protease secretion. However, the effect of autophagy on scleral extracellular matrix remodeling in the context of myopia is not fully understood. In this study, we measured the level of autophagy in sclera of form deprivation myopic guinea pigs; we also sought a correlation between the level of autophagy in human scleral fibroblasts and the extent of COL1A1 synthesis.

These reactogenic responses occur in previously sensitize individuals and have not been well defined at the cellular level, in part because many studies have been done in guinea pigs that have limited molecular tools. We previously characterized a mouse model of reactogenicity where local reactions sites showed an influx of CD8+ and IFNγ-expressing IL17a+ CD4+ T cells consistent with a Th1 delayed-type hypersensitivity.

Smith, 1853 is distributed in the Old World tropics, from Africa, Asia, New Guinea to Australia. There are four species (Guérin-Méneville, 1844), Smith, 1857, Emery, 1889, and Smith, 1857 previously recorded from Thailand. In the present paper, two new species of the genus, Yodprasit & Jaitrong, and Yodprasit & Jaitrong, , are described based on the worker caste.

To evaluate the changes of choroidal thickness (CT) and blood flow related to myopia, and its effects of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGFA) on choroidal vessels in myopia. Subjects were included and divided into emmetropia (EM), non-high myopia (Non-HM) and high myopia (HM) groups. we measured choroidal thickness (CT), choriocapillaris vessel density (VD), and VEGFA content in tears in humans (137 subjects for CT, VD and 84 for tear) and detected the role of VEGFA in the choroid in form-deprivation myopia (FDM) in guinea pigs.

Sea level rise (SLR) poses a significant threat to coastal regions worldwide, particularly affecting over 60 million people living below 10 m above sea level along the African coast. This study analyzes the spatio-temporal trends of sea level anomaly (SLA) and its components (thermosteric, halosteric and ocean mass) in the Eastern Tropical Atlantic Ocean (ETAO) from 1993 to 2022. The SLA trend for the ETAO, derived from satellite altimetry, is 3.

Monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes are classes of organic compounds found in various natural products, such as the essential oil of (). The therapeutic potential of these terpenes present in is evidenced by their effect on smooth muscle and potential clinical applications. Among the highlighted monoterpenes, such as sabinene, -pinene, and -pinene, a relaxing effect on rat intestinal smooth muscles is observed, attributed to interaction with calcium channels.

Global eradication of peste des petits ruminants (PPR) is planned for 2030 by international animal health organizations in collaboration with national partners. As the deadline approaches, it is fundamental that the PPR status in each country is determined. In addition, the identification of other pathogens of small ruminants that share common geographical locations and can produce similar clinical signs is also important for differential diagnosis.

The Afrotropics are experiencing some of the fastest urbanisation rates on the planet but the impact of city growth on their rich and unique biodiversity remains understudied, especially compared to natural baselines. Little is also known about how introduced species influence β-diversity in these contexts, and how patterns coincide with native ranges of species. Here we investigated how tree assemblages of the endemic-rich Afrotropical island of São Tomé differed between urban, rural and natural zones.

Background: Although global poverty rates have declined in the last decade, the fall in the Asia-Pacific region has been slow relative to the rest of the world. Poverty continues to be a major cause of poor maternal and newborn health, and a barrier to accessing timely antenatal care. Papua New Guinea has one of the highest poverty rates and some of the worst maternal and neonatal outcomes in the Asia-Pacific region.

Fresh/chilled meat differs in quality from frozen-thawed meat, and consumers prefer fresh meat over frozen-thawed meat. Differentiating between the two types of meat is an important part of the meat quality control system. This study aimed to develop an ELISA based on cytoplasmic antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD) as a biomarker.

High quality antibodies are useful tools for research in cell and developmental biology. We have obtained highly specific and potent guinea pig-derived polyclonal antibodies against Ce-lamin/ LMN-1 . Western blotting experiments using these antibodies demonstrated that maternally loaded Ce-lamin/ LMN-1 protein is very stable, can perdure through embryonic and larval development and remain detectable in homozygous null mutant adults.

Ulcerative colitis has been associated with psychological distress and an aberrant immune response. The immunomodulatory role of systemic cytokines produced during experimental intestinal inflammation in tonic immobility (TI) defensive behavior remains unknown. The present study characterized the TI defensive behavior of guinea pigs subjected to colitis induction at the acute stage and after recovery from intestinal mucosa injury.

Since its first discovery as a bioactive phospholipid inducing potent platelet aggregation, platelet-activating factor (PAF) has been shown to be involved in a wide variety of inflammatory and allergic disease states. Many pharmacological studies in the 1980s and 1990s also showed that PAF induces endothelium-dependent vascular relaxation and contraction of various smooth muscles (SMs), including those in the airway, gastrointestinal organs, and uterus. However, since the late 1990s, there have been few reports on the SM contractions induced by PAF.
