Prevalence of pregnancy termination and associated factors among married women in Papua New Guinea: A nationally representative cross-sectional survey.

Background: Pregnancy termination or induced abortion is not decriminalized, and access to safe abortion services is largely unavailable in Papua New Guinea (PNG). However, the practice is common throughout the country. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence and determine factors associated with pregnancy termination among married women aged 15-49 years in PNG.

Antigenic analysis of the influenza B virus hemagglutinin protein.

Influenza B viruses (IBVs) primarily infect humans and are a common cause of respiratory infections in humans. Here, to systematically analyze the antigenicity of the IBVs Hemagglutinin (HA) protein, 31 ​B/Victoria and 19 ​B/Yamagata representative circulating strains were selected from Global Initiative of Sharing All Influenza Data (GISAID), and pseudotyped viruses were constructed with the vesicular stomatitis virus system. Guinea pigs were immunized with three doses of vaccines (one dose of DNA vaccines following two doses of pseudotyped virus vaccines) of the seven IBV vaccine strains, and neutralizing antibodies against the pseudotyped viruses were tested.

Background: Worldwide, 10% of postpartum women experience postpartum depression, which can lead to diverse sequalae at individual, family, and societal levels. In sub-Saharan Africa, it is estimated that 17% of women experience depression in the postpartum period, which could be an underestimate as 48% of women in the region do not receive postnatal care (81% in Ethiopia and 51% in Guinea) and a large share of postpartum depression remains undiagnosed and untreated as a result. Globally, despite a critical evidence gap, there are growing reports of postpartum depression among women mistreated (disrespected and abused) during childbirth in health facilities, making a strong case to examine the association between mistreatment and postpartum depression.

The bridge relationships of PTSD and depression symptoms among snakebite victims: a cross-sectional community-based survey.

Background: The incidence of comorbid depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms is higher in snakebite victims. However, the present state and contributing factors of depression and PTSD among Chinese snakebite victims remain unclear.

Methods: A representative sample of 6837 snakebite victims were assessed with the Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Checklist (Civilian Version) and The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale.

Purpose: Autophagy dysregulation triggers extracellular matrix remodeling via changes in cellular collagen levels and protease secretion. However, the effect of autophagy on scleral extracellular matrix remodeling in the context of myopia is not fully understood. In this study, we measured the level of autophagy in sclera of form deprivation myopic guinea pigs; we also sought a correlation between the level of autophagy in human scleral fibroblasts and the extent of COL1A1 synthesis.

Molecular Mechanisms of Formalin Fixed Cellular Vaccine Reactogenicity.

Local and systemic reactogenic responses to Q-VAX® have prevented licensing of this vaccine outside of Australia. These reactogenic responses occur in previously sensitize individuals and have not been well defined at the cellular level, in part because many studies have been done in guinea pigs that have limited molecular tools. We previously characterized a mouse model of reactogenicity where local reactions sites showed an influx of CD8+ and IFNγ-expressing IL17a+ CD4+ T cells consistent with a Th1 delayed-type hypersensitivity.

Two new species and a new record of the ant genus Smith, 1853 (Hymenoptera, Formicidae, Myrmicinae) from Thailand.

Smith, 1853 is distributed in the Old World tropics, from Africa, Asia, New Guinea to Australia. There are four species (Guérin-Méneville, 1844), Smith, 1857, Emery, 1889, and Smith, 1857 previously recorded from Thailand. In the present paper, two new species of the genus, Yodprasit & Jaitrong, and Yodprasit & Jaitrong, , are described based on the worker caste.

Background: Although global poverty rates have declined in the last decade, the fall in the Asia-Pacific region has been slow relative to the rest of the world. Poverty continues to be a major cause of poor maternal and newborn health, and a barrier to accessing timely antenatal care. Papua New Guinea has one of the highest poverty rates and some of the worst maternal and neonatal outcomes in the Asia-Pacific region.

Generation of a highly specific and potent antibody against Ce-lamin/LMN-1.

High quality antibodies are useful tools for research in cell and developmental biology. We have obtained highly specific and potent guinea pig-derived polyclonal antibodies against Ce-lamin/ LMN-1 . Western blotting experiments using these antibodies demonstrated that maternally loaded Ce-lamin/ LMN-1 protein is very stable, can perdure through embryonic and larval development and remain detectable in homozygous null mutant adults.

Immune-mediated impairment of tonic immobility defensive behavior in an experimental model of colonic inflammation.

Ulcerative colitis has been associated with psychological distress and an aberrant immune response. The immunomodulatory role of systemic cytokines produced during experimental intestinal inflammation in tonic immobility (TI) defensive behavior remains unknown. The present study characterized the TI defensive behavior of guinea pigs subjected to colitis induction at the acute stage and after recovery from intestinal mucosa injury.

Effects of Platelet-Activating Factor (PAF) on the Mechanical Activities of Lower Urinary Tract and Genital Smooth Muscles.

Since its first discovery as a bioactive phospholipid inducing potent platelet aggregation, platelet-activating factor (PAF) has been shown to be involved in a wide variety of inflammatory and allergic disease states. Many pharmacological studies in the 1980s and 1990s also showed that PAF induces endothelium-dependent vascular relaxation and contraction of various smooth muscles (SMs), including those in the airway, gastrointestinal organs, and uterus. However, since the late 1990s, there have been few reports on the SM contractions induced by PAF.
