Updates of SARS-CoV-2 vaccines are required to generate immunity in the population against constantly evolving SARS-CoV-2 variants of concerns (VOCs). Here we describe three novel in-silico designed spike-based antigens capable of inducing neutralising antibodies across a spectrum of SARS-CoV-2 VOCs. Three sets of antigens utilising pre-Delta (T2_32), and post-Gamma sequence data (T2_35 and T2_36) were designed.

Globally, the environmental impacts of microplastics (MPs) as emerging pollutants have drawn a lot of attention. This study aimed to assess the distribution and associated potential ecotoxic risk of MPs in the water and sediment of Nigeria's offshore waters. Water and sediment samples were collected from sixteen (16) stations in October 2023 and analysed using Attenuated Total Reflectance-Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy and stereomicroscopy.

Trade and socioeconomic importance of an invasive giant snail in the endemic-rich island of São Tomé, Central Africa.

Interdisciplinary Centre of Social Sciences (CICS.NOVA), School of Social Sciences and Humanities (NOVA FCSH), NOVA University Lisbon, Lisbon, Portugal.

Managing invasive species is crucial to mitigate their negative impacts on ecosystems, yet conflicts may arise when their social benefits are disregarded. Human pressure on the endemic-rich forests of São Tomé has been high since the island was discovered by the Portuguese in the 15th century, and numerous species have been introduced. These include the invasive West African giant land snail (Archachatina marginata), which was introduced in the mid-20th century, is now widespread on the island, and is a potential threat to native flora and fauna.

The biological mechanisms underlying the development of myopia have not yet been completely elucidated. The retina is critical for visual signal processing, which primarily utilizes aerobic glycolysis to produce lactate as a metabolic end product. Lactate facilitates lysine lactylation (Kla), a posttranslational modification essential for transcriptional regulation.

Doping enhances the optical properties of high-band gap zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs), essential for their photocatalytic activity. We used the combustion approach to synthesize cobalt-doped ZnO heterostructure (CDZO). By creating a mid-edge level, it was possible to tune the indirect band gap of the ZnO NPs from 3.

Pulmonary surfactant serves as a barrier to respiratory epithelium but can also regulate airway smooth muscle (ASM) tone. Surfactant (SF) relaxes contracted ASM, similar to β-agonists, anticholinergics, nitric oxide, and prostanoids. The exact mechanism of surfactant relaxation and whether surfactant relaxes hyperresponsive ASM remains unknown.

Global shortfalls of knowledge on anuran tadpoles.

NPJ Biodivers

October 2023

Instituto de Diversidad y Ecología Animal (CONICET) and Centro de Zoología Aplicada (Universidad Nacional de Córdoba), 5000, Córdoba, Argentina.

Despite the amount of data on different aspects of biodiversity, such as species distributions, taxonomy, or phylogenetics, there are still significant gaps and biases in the available information. This is particularly true for life history traits, with fragmentary data for most taxa, especially those with complex life cycles. Anurans (frogs and toads) show larval (premetamorphic) stages that are in general radically decoupled from adult forms in most biological aspects.

Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) remains the only licensed vaccine against tuberculosis (TB). While BCG protects against TB in children, its protection against pulmonary TB in adults is suboptimal, and the development of a better TB vaccine is a global health priority. Previously, we reported two recombinant BCG strains effective against murine TB with low virulence and lung pathology in immunocompromised mice and guinea pigs.

Public Health Action

September 2024

National Department of Health, PNG.

Setting: Multidrug-resistant/rifampicin-resistant TB (MDR/RR-TB) is now endemic in the National Capital District (NCD), Papua New Guinea. Loss to follow-up (LTFU) is a challenge.

Objective: To evaluate and identify risk factors for LTFU, including pre-treatment LTFU, in adults with MDR/RR-TB at Port Moresby General Hospital (PMGH).

Continuous quality improvement in a community-wide TB screening and prevention programme in Papua New Guinea.

Public Health Action

September 2024

Burnet Institute, Daru, Western Province, Papua New Guinea and Melbourne, Australia.

Article Synopsis
  • - Daru Island in Papua New Guinea faces a significant challenge with TB and multidrug-resistant TB, prompting a community-wide project aimed at better detection and treatment of the disease.
  • - A continuous quality improvement (CQI) initiative using a plan-do-study-act (PDSA) framework showed that 13.7% of individuals screened were positive for TB, resulting in timely diagnosis and treatment initiation.
  • - The implementation process identified challenges such as meeting screening targets and stock shortages, but ultimately led to improved TB detection and screening rates within the community.

Papua New Guinea (PNG) is a high-burden country for TB, with an estimated annual TB incidence rate of 432 per 100,000 population. There are major challenges to the provision of quality care for TB patients with high rates of loss to follow-up, and multidrug-resistant TB is increasingly detected. In 2022-2023, the second Structured Operational Research Training IniTiative (SORT-IT) for TB was undertaken.

Objective: This study aims to explore the causal relationship between inflammatory markers and myopia through the use of bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) and myopia animal models.

Methods: The authors utilized data from a comprehensive and publicly accessible genome-wide association study (GWAS) for our analysis, which includes 460 536 European ancestry control subjects and 37 362 myopia patients. Utilizing a two-sample Mendelian randomization analysis framework, 27 inflammatory markers were investigated as exposure variables with myopia serving as the outcome variable.

Introduction: Risky behaviours, including tobacco use, are highly prevalent among adolescents worldwide. Although these behaviours are largely influenced by various sociodemographic factors, including sex, there is a paucity of regionally representative literature on the sex-related inequalities in cigarette smoking among adolescents in Africa. This study examined the sex-based disparities in current cigarette smoking among adolescents aged 13-15 years in Africa.

Article Synopsis
  • Animals can develop a resistance to ticks after getting bitten multiple times, known as acquired tick resistance (ATR).
  • Scientists tested a vaccine using mRNA that focuses on a specific tick protein in guinea pigs, which made the animals produce special antibodies.
  • The vaccinated guinea pigs showed skin reactions at tick bite sites, and researchers found that certain body processes, like histamine activation, are involved in this reaction.

Article Synopsis
  • Preterm birth can lead to brain injuries and long-term behavioral issues due to the loss of neurosteroid support from the placenta, increasing the risk of excitotoxic damage.
  • The study used guinea pigs to test zuranolone, an analogue of allopregnanolone, by administering it to preterm pups and analyzing behavior and brain structure.
  • Zuranolone treatment improved behavioral outcomes, prevented hyperactivity in male pups, and restored myelination and neurotransmitter pathways in preterm offspring, suggesting its potential as a neuroprotective therapy for preventing long-term impairments after preterm birth.

Electronic address:

Influenza B viruses (IBVs) primarily infect humans and are a common cause of respiratory infections in humans. Here, to systematically analyze the antigenicity of the IBVs Hemagglutinin (HA) protein, 31 B/Victoria and 19 B/Yamagata representative circulating strains were selected from Global Initiative of Sharing All Influenza Data (GISAID), and pseudotyped viruses were constructed with the vesicular stomatitis virus system. Guinea pigs were immunized with three doses of vaccines (one dose of DNA vaccines following two doses of pseudotyped virus vaccines) of the seven IBV vaccine strains, and neutralizing antibodies against the pseudotyped viruses were tested.
