Introduction: We aimed to investigate electrophysiologically and histopathologically, the protective effects of intratympanic memantine, an N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonist, on ototoxicity caused by cisplatin, an anti-neoplastic agent used in many types of cancer.

Methods: Thirty-seven guinea pigs with a normal auditory function were randomly allocated to group 1 (cisplatin; n = 8), group 2 (memantine; n = 8), group 3 (cisplatin + memantine; n = 8), group 4 (cisplatin + physiological serum [PS]; n = 8), and group 5 (control; n = 5). Auditory assessments were conducted using distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE) within a frequency range of 1-32 kHz and auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) within 8-32 kHz.

The objective of this work was to ascertain the nutritive value of six concentrate feedstuffs commonly used in guinea pig feed manufacturing through the substitution method. Six test diets were obtained by replacing the corresponding basal mixture with 40% corn, 50% barley, 45% wheat bran, 35% soybean meal, 30% pigeon pea, or 30% Leucaena leaf meal. Sixty-three guinea pigs were randomly assigned to one of the nine experimental diets (three basal diets and six test diets, with seven animals per diet).

The objective of this research was to work with Indigenous partners to generate Indigenous population prevalence estimates of commercial tobacco use in Toronto, and examine the association between smoking and sociodemographic, cultural, resiliency, and social variables.

Prion diseases are transmissible, fatal neurologic diseases of mammals caused by the accumulation of mis-folded, disease associated prion protein (PrPd). Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) is the most common human prion disease and can occur by sporadic onset (sCJD) (~85% of CJD cases), genetic mutations in the prion protein gene (10-15%) or iatrogenic transmission (rare). PrPd is difficult to inactivate and many methods to reduce prion infectivity are dangerous, caustic, expensive, or impractical.

How the immune response modulates the risk of intrauterine transmission of HCMV after maternal infection remains poorly understood. Maternal T cells likely play a critical role in preventing infection at the maternal-fetal interface and limiting spread across the placenta, but concerns exist that immune responses to infection may also cause placental dysfunction and adverse pregnancy outcomes.
