Respiration is essential for supporting human body functions. However, a biocompatible fiber respiration sensor has rarely been discussed. In this study, we propose a wearable fiber surface plasmon resonance (SPR) respiration sensor using a LiBr-doped silk fibroin (SF) film.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers have identified many novel RNA modifications in plants, particularly N6-methyladenosine (m6A), which play vital roles in both normal and abnormal physiological processes.
  • These RNA modifications can change the structure of RNA, affecting its ability to bind with proteins and leading to various physiological outcomes.
  • To support this research, the Plant RNA Modification Database (PRMD) was created, offering a comprehensive and user-friendly platform with tools for analysis and data visualization, accessible for free to researchers.

The control of information is a defining feature of the information age, and the optical modulator likewise has a crucial role in optical networks. The transmission, processing, and storage of data have demanded low energy consumption and high speed for photonic systems, promoting the development of electro-optic modulators to all-optical modulators. Although these all-optical modulation methods eliminate the photoelectric conversion, the disadvantage of volatile materials requiring continuous power supply when processing and retaining data in new materials-based devices increase energy consumption.

ZnO/CuO heterojunction integrated fiber-optic biosensor for remote detection of cysteine.

Biosens Bioelectron

March 2023

Key Laboratory of In-Fiber Integrated Optics, Ministry of Education, College of Physics and Optoelectronic Engineering, Harbin Engineering University, Harbin, 150001, China; Photonics Research Center, Guilin University of Electronics Technology, Guilin, 541004, China.

Indium tin oxide, semiconductor nanomaterial ZnO, and CuO were first loaded on the surface of the optical fiber to form an optical fiber probe. Large-volume macroscopic spatial light is replaced by an optical fiber path, and remote light injection is implemented. Based on the optical fiber probe, a photoelectrochemical biosensor was constructed and remote detection of cysteine was realized.

In this research, we proposed and experimentally verified a compact all-fiber sensor that can measure refractive index (RI) and temperature simultaneously. Two segments of hollow-core fiber (HCF) are connected to the two ends of the four-core fiber (FCF) as a beam splitter and a coupler, and then spliced with two sections of single-mode fibers (lead-in and lead-out SMF), respectively. The two hollow-core fibers can excite the higher-order modes of the four-core fiber and recouple the core modes and higher-order modes into the outgoing single-mode fiber, thereby forming inter-mode interference.

We have proposed and experimentally demonstrated a dual-parameter optical fiber sensor for simultaneous measurement of magnetic field and temperature. The sensor is a magnetofluid-coated single-mode fiber (SMF)-U-shaped hollow-core fiber (UHCF)-single-mode fiber (SMF) (SMF-UHCF-SMF) fiber structure. Combined with the intermodal interference and the macro-bending loss of the U-shaped fiber structure, the U-shaped fiber sensor with different bend diameters was investigated.

In this paper, we propose a hierarchical simulated annealing of erosion method (HSAE) to improve the computational efficiency of multiphase microstructure reconstruction, whose computational efficiency can be improved by an order of magnitude. Reconstruction of the two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) multiphase microstructures (pore, grain, and clay) based on simulated annealing (SA) and HSAE are performed. In the reconstruction of multiphase microstructure with HSAE and SA, three independent two-point correlation functions are chosen as the morphological information descriptors.

On-Chip Photon Angular Momentum Absolute Measurement Based on Angle Detection.

Nanomaterials (Basel)

March 2022

Photonics Research Center, School of Optoelectronic Engineering, Guilin University of Electronic Technology, Guilin 541004, China.

Photon angular momentum (AM) has been widely studied due to its unique properties. The accurate detection of photon AM is very important in its wide applications. Though various on-chip AM detectors based on surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) have been proposed, most of them can only realize relative measurement.

Wireless & Optoelectronics Research & Innovation Centre, Faculty of Computing, Engineering & Science, University of South Wales, Wales, CF37 1DL, UK.

In this paper, we propose a self-assembled graphene oxide (GO)/Ag NPs SERS Raman sensor based on a novel type of optofluidic MHF as a point-of-care testing (POCT) device. This device is used to diagnose jaundice and its related diseases through on-line detection of free bilirubin content in human serum. This optofluidic Raman sensor is composed of a microstructured hollow fiber (MHF) with a microstructured channel and a suspended core, which allows the sample solution to flow in the channel while interacting with the strong evanescent field on the suspended core.

Vortex Beam Encoded All-Optical Logic Gates Based on Nano-Ring Plasmonic Antennas.

Nanomaterials (Basel)

November 2019

Photonics Research Center, School of Electronic Engineering and Automation, Guilin University of Electronics Technology, Guilin 541004, China.

Vortex beam encoded all-optical logic gates are suggested to be very important in future information processing. However, within current logic devices, only a few are encoded by using vortex beams and, in these devices, some space optical elements with big footprints (mirror, dove prism and pentaprism) are indispensable components, which is not conducive to device integration. In this paper, an integrated vortex beam encoded all-optical logic gate based on a nano-ring plasmonic antenna is proposed.

Up to now, most of stimulated-emission-depletion (STED) systems were lens-based bulky systems. Exchanging some spatial light paths with optical fiber components will make the systems more flexible and will benefit various fields. A big problem to achieve this goal is that the STED beam generated by the traditional method of bulky systems cannot be maintained in an optical fiber due to its birefringence.

Design, transform and control of optical field in discrete optical system: an example.

Sci Rep

July 2017

Photonics Research Center, School of Electronic Engineering and Automation, Guilin University of Electronics Technology, Guilin, 541004, People's Republic of China.

A discrete optical system can broaden the spatial distribution of the input light through optical coupling in array waveguides, just like diffraction in continuous media. Here, we theoretically demonstrate several kinds of control methods of optical field propagation in a discrete optical system, which is composed of an Airy fiber with two perpendicular arrayed cores. A brief transform mechanism between Gaussian and Airy beam propagation in such a fiber is presented.
