Identification of the interfacial regions in misfolded transthyretin oligomers.

Misfolding and aggregation of transthyretin (TTR) is associated with numerous ATTR amyloidosis. TTR aggregates extracted from ATTR patients consist of not only full-length TTR, but also N-terminally truncated TTR fragments that can be produced by proteolytic cleavage, suggesting the presence of multiple misfolding pathways. Here, we report mechanistic studies of an early stage of TTR aggregation to probe the oligomerization process for the full-length as well as N-terminally truncated TTR.

Isolation of the elusive [Ru(bipy)]: a key intermediate in photoredox catalysis.

Photoredox catalysis has flourished in recent years, but due to its widespread utility applications have grown faster than mechanistic understanding. In this report we help to address this deficit by isolating and characterising one of the intermediates of the iconic photocatalyst [Ru(bipy)], and testing its initial photoreactivity towards common substrates.

However, the cleaning and maintenance of high-speed rail is a comprehensive task, which may easily cause environmental pollution. This study aims to analyze and improve the sustainability of the formulation and production process of a concentrated complex enzyme detergent used as the maintenance agent for high-speed trains via the life cycle assessment (LCA) method.

"I Think It's Too Early to Know": Gender Identity Labels and Gender Expression of Young Children With Nonbinary or Binary Transgender Parents.

Little is known about gender expression among children with transgender parents. In the United States, we surveyed 64 nonbinary or binary transgender parents of children aged 18 to 71 months. Most parents reported a marginalized sexual identity and a White racial identity.

Using Community-Based Participatory Research to Characterize Health and Lifestyle Behaviors of Montagnards, a Refugee-Origin Asian-American Subgroup.

Montagnards, an indigenous multitribal refugee-origin population concentrated in North Carolina, remain an invisible, medically underserved, and socioeconomically underrepresented Asian American sub-group. Yet this group is resilient, with language diversity, rich cultural traditions and family caregiving in multigenerational households. Using community-based participatory research methods, we developed and administered a two-part survey to 144 Montagnard adults, documenting socioeconomic characteristics, health indicators and lifestyle behaviors.

Toward a rational and ethical sociotechnical system of autonomous vehicles: A novel application of multi-criteria decision analysis.

The impacts of autonomous vehicles (AV) are widely anticipated to be socially, economically, and ethically significant. A reliable assessment of the harms and benefits of their large-scale deployment requires a multi-disciplinary approach. To that end, we employed Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis to make such an assessment.

Seasonal Ely Copper Mine Superfund site shotgun metagenomic and metatranscriptomic data analysis.

High throughput sequencing data collected from acid rock drainage (ARD) communities can reveal the active taxonomic and functional diversity of these extreme environments, which can be exploited for bioremediation, pharmaceutical, and industrial applications. Here, we report a seasonal comparison of a microbiome and transcriptome in Ely Brook (EB-90M), a confluence of clean water and upstream tributaries that drains the Ely Copper Mine Superfund site in Vershire, VT, USA. Nucleic acids were extracted from EB-90M water and sediment followed by shotgun sequencing using the Illumina NextSeq platform.

Fostering Inclusion through an Interinstitutional, Community-Engaged, Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experience.

Creation of an inclusive environment requires a culture of equity, justice, value and respect for diverse backgrounds, and opportunities for students to engage with communities while addressing issues in science and society. These tasks are particularly challenging for institutions lacking a diverse population. Here, we demonstrate evidence of a successful model for creating an inclusive environment in an interinstitutional course between a large, public, historically black institution and a small, private, primarily white institution.

Access to Orthopaedic Care for Spanish-Speaking Patients in California.

Background: Communication is the foundation of any patient-doctor relationship. Patients who are unable to communicate effectively with physicians because of language barriers may face disparities in accessing orthopaedic care and in the evaluation and treatment of musculoskeletal symptoms. We evaluated whether Spanish-speaking patients face disparities scheduling appointments with orthopaedists via the telephone.

Land use, REDD+ and the status of wildlife populations in Yaeda Valley, northern Tanzania.

REDD+ projects primarily focus on reducing carbon emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries. These projects are regularly evaluated against their core objective of conserving carbon stocks, but their contribution to biodiversity conservation has rarely been assessed. To assess the conservation value of the area and the relative performance of a REDD+ land use plan in Yaeda Valley, a semi-arid savannah ecosystem in northern Tanzania, we implemented an annual wildlife monitoring scheme.

Foraging and homing behavior of honey bees (Apis mellifera) during a total solar eclipse.

Exceptional natural phenomena, such as those that occur during a total solar eclipse, provide unique opportunities to study animal behavior outside the naturally evolved context, which can be informative in more general terms. Circumstantial descriptions of abnormal animal behavior during solar eclipses abound, although scientific studies conducted during an eclipse are relatively rare due to inherent logistical difficulties. Here, honey bee foraging and homing behavior were studied during the total solar eclipse of August 21, 2017.

Long-term monitoring of waste-rock weathering at the Antamina mine, Peru.

The weathering of mine waste rock can cause release of metal-laden and acidic drainage that requires long-term and costly environmental management. To identify and quantify the geochemical processes and physical transport mechanisms controlling drainage quality, we monitored the weathering of five large-scale (20,000 t) instrumented waste-rock piles of variable and mixed-composition at the Antamina mine, Peru, in a decade-long monitoring program. Fine-grained, sulfidic waste rock with low-carbonate content exhibited high sulfide oxidation rates (>1 g S kg waste rock yr) and within 7 years produced acidic (pH < 3) drainage with high Cu and Zn concentrations in the g L range.

Racial differences in symptom management experiences during breast cancer treatment.

Purpose: Racial disparities in cancer treatment-related symptom burden are well documented and linked to worse treatment outcomes. Yet, little is known about racial differences in patients' treatment-related symptom management experiences. Such understanding can help identify modifiable drivers of symptom burden inequities.

Haemosporidian prevalence and parasitaemia in the Black-throated sparrow (Amphispiza bilineata) in central-Mexican dryland habitats.

To date it is not well-understood how seasonality and human-induced habitat change may affect haemosporidian prevalence and parasitaemia in bird hosts in dryland habitats. We compared haemosporidian prevalence and parasitaemia between habitat types, including Yucca-dominated scrublands (closed habitat) and creosotebush scrublands (open habitat), and between seasons, including non-breeding (dry) and breeding (wet) in the Black-throated sparrow (Amphispiza bilineata) at semi-arid scrublands of Central Mexico. This bird species has different habitat preferences in comparison to other, previously studied species in the region; it shows higher abundances in open than in closed habitats and avoids urban areas.

Sexual orientation and future parenthood in a 2011-2013 nationally representative United States sample.

Previous researchers have found evidence for differences in parenting goals between lesbian and gay people and their heterosexual peers. However, no previous research has quantified the parenting goals of bisexual people or evaluated parenting goals as a function of sexual partner gender. In addition, political and social climates for sexual minority people had improved rapidly since the last representative data on lesbian and gay peoples' plans for parenthood were collected.

Relationship of visfatin level to pancreatic endocrine hormone level, HOMA-IR index, and HOMA β-cell index in overweight women who performed hydraulic resistance exercise.

[Purpose] This study aimed to examine the correlation of visfatin level to pancreatic endocrine hormone level, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) index, and HOMA β-cell index in hydraulic resistance exercise. Furthermore, it investigated the relationship between visfatin level and other variables affected by exercise in overweight women. [Subjects and Methods] The exercise group trained for 12 weeks, 70 minutes/day, 5 days/week.

Health Care Providers' Implicit and Explicit Attitudes Toward Lesbian Women and Gay Men.

Objectives: We examined providers' implicit and explicit attitudes toward lesbian and gay people by provider gender, sexual identity, and race/ethnicity.

Methods: We examined attitudes toward heterosexual people versus lesbian and gay people in Implicit Association Test takers: 2338 medical doctors, 5379 nurses, 8531 mental health providers, 2735 other treatment providers, and 214,110 nonproviders in the United States and internationally between May 2006 and December 2012. We characterized the sample with descriptive statistics and calculated Cohen d, a standardized effect size measure, with 95% confidence intervals.

Effective practitioners rely on theory and research as a guide to best practices. Thus, sound theory, which is both practical and parsimonious, is a key to effective practice.

In Alifa Rifaat's "My World of the Unknown," the female narrator's homoerotic encounter with a djinn functions as a radical brand of Islamic feminism that challenges Arabo-Islamic cultural perceptions of female sexuality as threatening. Rifaat reinterprets Islamic teachings and Arabic folklore to show how women's sexuality must be revered rather than feared.

Men's knowledge and beliefs about colorectal cancer and 3 screenings: education, race, and screening status.

Objective: To compare how education, race, and screening status affected men's knowledge about colorectal cancer and their views of 3 screenings: the fecal occult blood test (FOBT), sigmoidoscopy, and colonoscopy.

Methods: In-depth interviews were conducted with 65 African American and white men with diverse education backgrounds with similar numbers screened and unscreened.

Results: Education was associated with knowledge about colorectal cancer and the colonoscopy.
