The water quality indices, health risk, and burden of disease attributable to heavy metals in rural communities of Yazd County, Iran during 2015-2021 were studied. The drinking water quality index (DWQI) based on 27 parameters (including heavy metals) and heavy metal pollution index (HPI) were used for assessing drinking water quality. The health risk and burden of disease from heavy metals in drinking water were estimated in terms of hazard quotient (HQ), hazard index (HI), incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR), and disability-adjusted life year (DALY).

Breast cancer (BC) is the most prevalent form of cancer among women and is a major contributor to cancer-related fatalities. Nanotechnology has provided novel approaches to drug delivery to cancer cells. In this work, we synthesized platinum (Pt) nanoparticles, functionalized them with glutamine, conjugated them with thiosemicarbazone (TSC), and characterized their anticancer effects on the MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cell line.

Article Synopsis
  • * The study included children, young adults, and adults, finding a combined prevalence of P. aeruginosa at 34.3%, with frequency ranging from 5.9% to 76.2% in different studies.
  • * The research highlighted that while P. aeruginosa has high resistance rates overall, it was notably less resistant to colistin (0%-13.3%) and ticarcillin (3.9%-24%), suggesting these antibiotics could be more effective for treating infections in CF patients. *

Exercise (Ex) and environmental enrichment (EE) as the nondrug solutions have positive effects on cognitive behaviors and also increase the ability to cope with anxiety, fear, and stress. In this research, we decided to investigate the simultaneous effect of Ex and EE on anxiety-like behaviors and hippocampal neurogenesis markers in healthy rats. A total of 40 male Wistar rats were divided into four treatment groups: control, EE, Ex, and EE + Ex.

Objectives: We investigated the therapeutic effect of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) combined with routine physiotherapy on the neurological and upper limb motor function in ischemic stroke patients with hemiplegia.

Methods: In a Randomized double-blind controlled trial study, 52 eligible stroke patients were assigned to real tDCS receiving bihemispheric electrical current with 1.5 mA for 30 minutes over the primary motor cortex, and sham tDCS with a current intensity of 0.

Article Synopsis
  • Sleep-related disorders are prevalent among older adults with COPD, and breathing exercises may potentially enhance sleep quality, but there is limited research on their specific effects.
  • This study compared diaphragmatic breathing (DB) and pursed-lip breathing (PLB) exercises on sleep quality in 60 elderly COPD patients through a crossover clinical trial, measuring outcomes with various questionnaires.
  • Both DB and PLB significantly improved sleep quality, with no difference between the two; however, DB followed by PLB led to greater improvement, suggesting these exercises are effective non-pharmacological interventions for sleep enhancement in elderly COPD patients.

Diagnosis and management of status epilepticus: improving the status quo.

Lancet Neurol

January 2025

Division of Epilepsy and Clinical Neurophysiology, Boston Children's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, USA.

Status epilepticus is a common neurological emergency that is characterised by prolonged or recurrent seizures without recovery between episodes and associated with substantial morbidity and mortality. Prompt recognition and targeted therapy can reduce the risk of complications and death associated with status epilepticus, thereby improving outcomes. The most recent International League Against Epilepsy definition considers two important timepoints in status epilepticus: first, when the seizure does not self-terminate; and second, when the seizure can have long-term consequences, including neuronal injury.

Theorizing that Psychedelic Assisted Therapy May Play a Role in the Treatment of Trauma-Induced Personality Disorders.

J Addict Psychiatry

November 2024

Division of Addiction Research, Therapy and Education, Center for Sports, Exercise and Mental Health, Western Health Sciences, Pomona, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • Borderline personality disorder (BPD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) share similar neurobiological features, suggesting that BPD might be better classified as "traumatic personality stress disorder" (TPSD).
  • The study explores how psychedelic-assisted therapy (PAT) could effectively treat both BPD and PTSD, emphasizing its role in stabilizing reward functions.
  • Reclassifying BPD as TPSD may lead to more personalized treatment approaches, reduce stigma, and improve understanding and management of related psychological conditions.

Article Synopsis
  • Blood-based biomarkers like plasma neurofilament light chain (pNfL) are vital for understanding Alzheimer's disease (AD) and their relationship with brain imaging techniques, particularly tensor-based morphometry (TBM).
  • The study analyzed data from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) involving 567 participants to explore how polygenic hazard score (PHS) influences the link between pNfL and TBM findings.
  • Results indicated that PHS mediates the relationship between pNfL levels and TBM measures in AD, suggesting that PHS should be considered in future research on AD biomarkers and imaging outcomes.
