Peri-implantitis is a plaque-associated condition characterized by mucosal inflammation and subsequent progressive loss of supporting bone; it is caused by bacterial biofilm, but the host response triggered by bacterial stimulation promotes the release of cells and mediators that culminate in tissue destruction. The Aryl-hydrocarbon Receptor (AhR) is associated with IL-22 production by Th22 and Th17 CD4+ Th cells. The presence of IL-6 may promote the Th22 phenotype.

The isoflavone (3)-vestitol, obtained from red propolis, has exhibited anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and anti-caries activity; however, few manuscripts deal with its anti-inflammatory mechanisms in macrophages. The objective is to elucidate the anti-inflammatory mechanisms of (3)-vestitol on those cells. Peritoneal macrophages of C57BL6 mice, stimulated with lipopolysaccharide, were treated with 0.

The ecological functions restoration in agricultural areas is a major challenge on a landscape scale. In the specific case of active restoration through Agroforestry Systems (AFS), the absence of a specific direction hinders ecological restoration processes, especially in regions that prefer intensive agriculture. Thus, this study aims to develop a Spatial Indicator of Priority Areas to guide Agroforestry Systems implementation in agricultural landscapes.

Biofilms are complex tri-dimensional structures that encase microbial cells in an extracellular matrix comprising self-produced polymeric substances. The matrix rich in extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) contributes to the unique features of biofilm lifestyle and structure, enhancing microbial accretion, biofilm virulence, and antimicrobial resistance. The role of the EPS matrix of biofilms growing on biotic surfaces, especially dental surfaces, is largely unravelled.

Background: The aim of the present study was to compare repeated applications of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) to open flap debridement (OFD) in the treatment of residual periodontal pockets in non-furcation sites.
Methods: Forty-six subjects with a diagnosis of Stage III or IV Grade C periodontitis, that had been previously treated, participated in the study. Residual pockets were divided between two groups: (1) aPDT group: received ultrasonic periodontal debridement followed by immediate application of aPDT, and repeated on1st, 2nd, 7th, and 14th days; and (2) OFD group: treated by modified papilla preservation technique, where granulation tissue and visible calculus were removed with hand curettes and an ultrasonic device.

Implant-related infections at the early healing period are considered one of the main risk factors in implant failure. Designing coatings that control bacterial adhesion and have cell stimulatory behavior remains a challenging strategy for dental implants. Here, we used plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) to produce antimicrobial coatings on commercially pure titanium (cpTi) using bioactive elements (calcium and phosphorus) and different copper (Cu) sources: copper acetate (CuAc), copper sulfate (CuS), and copper oxide (CuO); coatings containing only Ca and P (CaP) served as controls.

Introduction: Burns often cause severe physical and mental suffering and can become a trigger for the development of permanent psychological diseases, even after wound healing. Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is one such disorder, which involves the re-experiencing of many symptoms provoked by a previous traumatic situation.
Method: This study is a systematic review of interventions used to reduce or prevent PTSD symptoms in burn victims.

Dental implants represent an illustrative example of successful medical devices used in increasing numbers to aid (partly) edentulous patients. Particularly in spite of the percutaneous nature of dental implant systems, their clinical success is remarkable. This clinical success is at least partly related to the effective surface treatment of the artificial dental root, providing appropriate physicochemical properties to achieve osseointegration.

, an oral fungal opportunistic pathogen, has shown the ability to colonize implant surfaces and has been frequently isolated from biofilms associated with dental implant-related infections, possibly due to its synergistic interactions with certain oral bacteria. Moreover, evidence suggests that this cross-kingdom interaction on implant can encourage bacterial growth, leading to increased fungal virulence and mucosal damage. However, the role of in implant-related infections has been overlooked and not widely explored or even considered by most microbiological analyses and therapeutic approaches.

Introduction: Infections caused by parasitic flatworms impose a considerable worldwide health burden. Recently, World Health Organization launched its roadmap for neglected diseases for the period 2021 to 2030 and oral treatment with praziquantel (PZQ) in tablet form is the main drug therapy for combating these diseases, but its use is limited by many drawbacks, including the high therapeutic dose due to the drug's low solubility and bioavailability. Among the strategies to improve PZQ performance, the use of drug nanocarriers has been cited as an interesting approach to overcome these pharmacological issues.

Dental implants made of titanium (Ti) material is recognized as the leading treatment option for edentulous patients' rehabilitation, showing a high success rate and clinical longevity. However, dental implant surface acts as a platform for microbial adhesion and accumulation once exposed to the oral cavity. Biofilm formation on implant surfaces has been considered the main etiologic factor to induce inflammatory diseases, known as peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis; the latter being recognized as the key reason for late dental implant failure.

This review aimed to assess the impact of dietary omega-3 fatty acids as an adjunct to non-surgical periodontal treatment when compared with periodontal treatment alone on periodontal clinical parameters of periodontitis patients. We included only randomized clinical trials (RCTs) with at least 3-months follow-up of non-surgical periodontal therapy, in combination with dietary omega-3 fatty acids. The MEDLINE, EMBASE, and LILACS databases were searched for articles published up to October 2021.

The use of tissue engineering to restore and to build new bone tissue is under active research at present. The following review summarizes the latest studies and clinical trials related to the use of osteogenic cells, biomaterials, and scaffolds to regenerate bone defects in the human jaws. Bone tissue engineering (BTE) combined with scaffolds have provided a range of advantages not only to transport the target cells to their desired destination but also to support the early phases of the mineralization process.

Introduction: The correction of maxillary transverse discrepancy is achieved by means of rapid maxillary expansion, which may be performed by conventional or surgically-assisted rapid maxillary expansion, and more recently, by miniscrew-assisted rapid palatal expansion (MARPE). This study assessed the bone thickness of the palate on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images for placement of mini-implants and anchorage of MARPE.
Methods: The sample consisted of 223 CBCT scans from patients of both genders (137 females and 86 males) aged ≥18 years.
Introduction: The bidirectional relationship between diabetes mellitus and periodontal disease has been reported in the literature, suggesting that poor glycemic control is strongly associated with increased risk of developing periodontal disease. Therefore, this systematic review evaluated the level of knowledge of this bidirectional relationship among patients with diabetes.
Methods: This systematic review (protocol CRD42018117902) was conducted according to PRISMA guidelines.

: Optimal management of hypodivergent growing patients demands a strict control of vertical dimension and to exploit the growth potential. If a deep bite malocclusion causes a traumatic contact between the upper and lower incisors and affects the facial appearance, an early interceptive treatment is recommended. The aim of this case report is to outline the clinical management of the occlusal plane of a growing Class II division 1 deep bite patient treated with aligners and Class II elastics.
