Copper homeostasis and pregnancy complications: a comprehensive review.

J Assist Reprod Genet

January 2025

Department of Obstetrics, Guangzhou Women and Children's Medical Center, Guangzhou Medical University, Guangzhou, China.

Pregnancy complications pose challenges for both pregnant women and obstetricians globally, with the pathogenesis of many remaining poorly understood. Recently coined as a mode of cell death, cuproptosis has been proposed but remains largely unexplored. This process involves copper overload, resulting in the accumulation of fatty acylated proteins and subsequent loss of iron-sulfur cluster proteins.

Background: Treatment outcomes for acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) have improved with all-trans-retinoic acid and arsenic trioxide, yet relapse remains a concern, especially in pediatric patients. The prognostic value of minimal residual disease (MRD) post-induction and the impact of arsenic levels during induction on MRD are not fully understood.

Objectives: To evaluate the relationship between post-induction MRD levels and relapse-free survival (RFS) in pediatric APL patients, and to investigate the correlation between blood arsenic concentration levels during induction therapy and MRD status.

Background: Infectious episodes contribute to morbidity and mortality in patients with anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis (AAV). Renal involvement, also known as ANCA-associated glomerulonephritis (AGN), is frequently observed in AAV. Little is known about whether co-infection at initial diagnosis is associated with renal outcome and prognosis in children with AGN.

Both 20S and 19S proteasome components are essential for meiosis in male mice.

Zool Res

January 2025

Guangzhou Women and Children's Medical Center, Guangzhou Medical University, Guangzhou, Guangdong 510623, China. E-mail:

The proteasome, an evolutionarily conserved proteolytic complex comprising the 20S core particle and 19S regulatory particles, performs both shared and distinct functions across various tissues and organs. Spermatogenesis, a highly complex developmental process, relies on proteasome activity at multiple stages to regulate protein turnover. In this study, we selected the 20S subunit PSMA1 and 19S regulatory subunit PSMD2 to investigate the potential functions of the proteasome in spermatogenesis.

Background: Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) represents the most prevalent subtype, accounting for nearly 80% of all RCC cases. Recent research has shown that high expression of circular non-coding RNA (circRNA) is associated with poor prognosis in patients with renal clear cell carcinoma (ccRCC), however, the underlying mechanism remains unclear.

Methods: After analysing self-sequenced renal cancer and paracancer circRNA sequencing data and comparing it with the GEO public database, we discovered that circASAP1 expression was significantly up-regulated in renal cancers.

Microcytosis of red cells and mild anemia are common in thalassemia carriers but those phenotypes are not specific. It is really a challenge for clinical interpretation of those variants. Co-segregation with disease in affected family members or specific phenotypes such as the abnormal Hb H are very helpful to assess the pathogenicity of rare variants.

Polymorphisms in the gene and neuroblastoma risk in Chinese children from Jiangsu province.

J Cancer

January 2025

Department of Pediatric Surgery, Guangzhou Institute of Pediatrics, Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Research in Structural Birth Defect Disease, Guangzhou Women and Children's Medical Center, Guangzhou Medical University, Guangdong Provincial Clinical Research Center for Child Health, Guangzhou 510623, Guangdong, China.

Neuroblastoma is the most prevalent extracranial solid tumor among children and exhibits remarkable heterogeneity. The methylation of cytosine to form 5-methylcytosine (m5C) is the primary type of modification found in DNA and RNA. The NOL1/NOP2/sun (NSUN) family, specifically NSUN1, is responsible for the methylation process and has been shown to play a key role in cell differentiation and cancer development.

Reproductive Medicine Center, Henan Provincial People's Hospital, Zhengzhou, China; Reproductive Medicine Center, Zhengzhou University People's Hospital, Zhengzhou, China; Henan Joint International Research Laboratory of Reproductive Bioengineering, Zhengzhou, China. Electronic address:

4-Cyano-4'-ethoxybiphenyl (EBCN) is a representative cyano liquid crystal monomer (LCM). While prior studies have documented the widespread occurrence of LCMs in diverse environmental and biological samples, research on their reproductive effects in vivo remains limited. This study employed 35-day and 70-day exposure models in mice to assess the short-term and long-term effects of environmentally relevant concentrations of EBCN on testicular health.

Oral administration of pioglitazone inhibits pulmonary hypertension by regulating the gut microbiome and plasma metabolome in male rats.

Physiol Rep

January 2025

Department of Laboratory Medicine, The Affiliated Qingyuan Hospital (Qingyuan People's Hospital), Guangzhou Medical University, Qingyuan, Guangdong, China.

The oral administrated thiazolidinediones (TZDs) have been widely reported to alleviate experimental pulmonary hypertension (PH). However, previous studies mainly focused on their beneficial effects on the cardiopulmonary vascular system but failed to determine their potential roles on gut microenvironment. This study aims to investigate the effects of pioglitazone, an oral TZD drug, on gut microbiome in classic PH rat models induced by hypoxia (HPH) or SU5416/hypoxia (SuHx-PH) and evaluate the therapeutic potential of supplementation of selective probiotics for experimental PH.

Sex hormones and immune regulation in ovarian cancer.

Discov Oncol

December 2024

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Guangzhou Women and Children's Medical Center, Guangzhou Medical University, 9 Jinsui Road, Tianhe District, Guangzhou, 510623, Guangdong, China.

Ovarian cancer continues to be a major cause of morbidity and mortality in women, with immune regulation playing a critical role in its progression and treatment response. This review explores the interplay between sex hormones, particularly estrogen and progesterone, and immune regulation in ovarian cancer. We delve into the mechanisms by which these hormones influence immune cell function, modulate immune checkpoints, and alter the tumor microenvironment.

Background: Several clinical trials have shown that immunotherapy plays a pivotal role in the treatment of patients with metastatic synovial sarcoma. Immune-related genes (IRGs) have been demonstrated to predict the immunotherapy response in certain malignant tumours. However, the clinical significance of IRGs in patients with synovial sarcoma (SS) is still unclear.

Institute of Translational Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences & Ministry of Education Frontiers Science Center for Precision Oncology, University of Macau, Taipa 999078, Macau, China.

Levels of tissue oxygenation and collagen regeneration are critical indicators in the early evaluation of wound healing. Traditionally, these factors have been assessed using separate instruments and different methodologies. Here, we adopt the spatially averaged phosphorescence lifetime approach using Re-diimine complexes (Re-probe) to enable simultaneous quantification of these two critical factors in healing wounds.
