September 2005

Department of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, Guangzhou Tumor Hospital, Guangzhou 510095, China.

Objective: To evaluate the therapeutic effects of Guliu capsule (GLC) combined with 89Sr in treating metastatic bone tumors.

Methods: On the basis of random sampling and grouping, 50 patients with metastatic bone tumors were selected to receive combined treatment with GLC and (89)Sr with another 50 patients recruited for (89)Sr treatment alone. The therapeutic effect of the therapies were evaluated according to the relief of ostalgia and quality-of life (QOF), local bone metabolism and hematopoietic function of the bone marrow.

Objective: To compare the efficacy and safety of cryoanalgesia and patient-controlled epidural analgesia (PCEA) after thoracotomy.

Methods: Forty patients undergoing elective thoracotomy were randomly divided into cryoanalgesia group (L group, n=20) and PCEA group (n=20). Before chest closure, 4 costal nerve branches (at, above and below the incision, and one for inserting drainage tube) were isolated and frozen for 90 s at -40 to -89 degrees Celsius in L group.

Objective: To study the effect of neoadjuvant chemotherapy on estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), and HER-2 expression in patients with breast cancer.

Methods: From 59 breast cancer patients treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy and 33 without neoadjuvant therapy (control), core biopsy samples before the chemotherapy or surgery and surgical specimens were obtained for assay of ER, PR, and HER-2 expression.

Results: Quantitative alteration of ER expression occurred in 37.

Objective: To compare the dose difference in irradiation dose between nasopharyngeal cancer patients receiving conventional radiotherapy (CR) and intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT).

Methods: The various IMRT and the CR plans for patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma were created by a three-dimensional treatment planning system (3D-TPS). The dose-volume histograms (DVH) of normal tissues and the total number of irradiation monitor units (MU) were calculated by 3D-TPS.

Objective: To study the effects of taxotere and adriamycin based chemotherapy on the electrocardiogram (ECG) of patients with locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer.

Methods: Chemotherapy combining taxotere (75 mg/m(2)) and adriamycin (5 mg/m(2)) once every 3 weeks was performed in 250 patients with locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer. Electrocardiograph was recorded before and after each treatment course for a total of 10 courses.

Objective: To explore the short-term effect of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) combined with arterial embolization in treating patients with primary liver cancer.

Methods: Thirty patients with primary liver cancer received the combined treatment and the pre- and post-operative alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) levels, imaging features, and liver function were investigated along with observation of the incidence of complications to evaluate the therapeutic effects.

Results: The post-operative AFP positivity and the tumor density were significantly reduced in these patients, and their one-year survival rate reached 96.

Background & Objective: There were few reports about combined usage of taxotere in induction chemotherapy of head and neck cancer. It was reported previously that the total response rate in advanced head and neck cancer using TPF regimen [taxotere+cisplatin(DDP)+5-fluorouracil (5-FU)] was 93%. In this article, the authors preliminarily reported the response rate and side effects of TPF regimen in head and neck cancers.

Objective: To compare the clinical curative effects between 89Sr and its combination with the Guliu recipe (GLR, a Chinese herbal medicine) in treating multiple bone metastatic tumor of mammary cancer (MBM-MC).

Methods: By adopting the random sampling and grouping method, 89Sr alone (Sr) and 89Sr combined with CHM (Sr-GLR) were used in treating 86 and 40 patients with MBM-MC respectively. The efficacy of therapy were appraised according to the degree of ostalgia relieving and quality of life (QOF) in patients, and the effect of treatment on focal bone metabolism and bone marrow hematopoietic function were compared.
