Background: Several studies have shown positive associations between higher WBC count and deaths from all-causes, CHD, stroke and cancer among occidental populations or developed countries of Asia. No study on the association of WBC count with all-cause and cause-specific mortality in Chinese populations was reported. We studied this using prospective data from a large Chinese cohort.

Study Objectives: There is limited knowledge regarding the effects of air pollution on sleep disorders, particularly in children. The aim of this study is to investigate this association in Chinese children.
Methods: During 2012-2013, 59754 children aged 2-17 years were randomly selected from 27 districts in seven northeastern Chinese cities.

To explore the clinical characteristics and treatments of patients with idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss(ISSHL) with or without vertigo. One hundred and twenty ISSHL cases were divided into vertigo group (=36) , without vertigo group (=84) , and with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo group (=15). All patients were in regular treatment.

Background: Findings describing the relationship between pulmonary function and peripheral vascular function have been inconclusive. We explored this relationship in Guangzhou Biobank Cohort Study-Cardiovascular Subcohort (GBCS-CVD).
Methods: Brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) and ankle brachial index (ABI) were measured by a waveform analyser, and pulmonary function by turbine flowmeter spirometry.

Background: Prediction of disease burden in China arising from smoking based on earlier cohorts in the West and China could not reflect the disease burden at the current stage accurately. No cohort studies in China focused specifically on people born since 1950. We examined the risk of all-cause mortality attributed to smoking in adults in Guangzhou, the city with the most rapidly expanding economy in China.

Purpose: Eggs are highly nutritious but concerns over their cholesterol content have led to dietary avoidance among many. There are also important international differences in relevant dietary guidance. We conducted the first prospective study in China investigating the association of egg consumption, cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality, and a meta-analysis.

Background: Health effects of air pollution on diabetes have been scarcely studied in developing countries. We aimed to explore the associations of long-term exposure to ambient particulate matter (PM) and gaseous pollutants with diabetes prevalence and glucose-homoeostasis markers in China.
Methods: Between April 1 and Dec 31, 2009, we recruited a total of 15 477 participants aged 18-74 years using a random number generator and a four-staged, stratified and cluster sampling strategy from a large cross-sectional study (the 33 Communities Chinese Health Study) from three cities in Liaoning province, northeastern China.

The effect of ambient air pollution exposure on childhood hypertension has emerged as a concern in China, and previous studies suggested pet ownership is associated with lower blood pressure (BP). However, limited information exists on the interactive effects pet ownership and air pollution exposure has on hypertension. We investigated the interactions between exposure to pet ownership and air pollutants on hypertension in Chinese children.

Introduction: The Chinese government's implementation of the MPOWER policies and compliance with the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control requirements has been slow. We used the 'foot-in-the-door' approach to promote tobacco control advocacy through capacity building of healthcare leaders, and establishment of smoking cessation clinics in Guangzhou and Beijing (two of the largest cities in China).
Methods: This collaborative pilot project involved the University of Hong Kong and three major hospitals in Guangzhou and Beijing.

Previous studies have demonstrated associations of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), a group of highly persistent chemicals ubiquitous in wildlife and humans, with hypertension, but the relationships are mixed. Furthermore, academic literature on the relationship between isomers of PFASs and blood pressure (BP) and hypertension in populations from a higher pollution area is scant. We studied 1612 Chinese adults, ages 22-96years old, from Shenyang, China, utilizing high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry to analyze isomers of perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS), perfluorooctanoate (PFOA), and other PFASs in blood serum.

Objectives: To explore the clinical utility of glycated hemoglobin (A1C) levels as an early marker of albuminuria, macrovascular disease and subclinical cardiovascular disease in comparison to fasting and postprandial glucose levels in a well-characterized Chinese population with no history of diabetes.
Methods: The study population consisted of 1223 individuals who were enrolled in the Guangzhou Biobank Cohort Study, Cardiovascular Disease Subcohort, and who had undergone oral glucose tolerance tests. The associations between each glycemic measure and albuminuria, carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) and CIMT-based presence of carotid plaques and aortic arch calcification were assessed by chest radiographs.

Purpose: To assess the proportion of the association between obesity and diabetes mediated by liver enzymes such as gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT), alanine transaminase (ALT), and aspartate transaminase (AST).
Methods: Mediation analysis was used with adjustment for age, education, physical activity, smoking, and alcohol use.
Results: A total of 9748 participants from Phase III of the Guangzhou Biobank Cohort Study were recruited in 2006-2008.

Compared to other ethnic groups Asians are more likely to be sensitive to alcohol, due to polymorphisms of alcohol-metabolizing enzymes. Although previous studies have found positive association between regular alcohol use and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (HsCRP), whether this association is modified by alcohol sensitivity has not been clarified. We therefore sought to examined this potential effect modification in a cross-sectional community sample with high prevalence of alcohol sensitivity, using data from 2903 men aged ≥50years recruited during phase 1 of the Guangzhou Biobank Cohort Study.

Objectives We studied the association between secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure and peripheral arterial disease (PAD) in Chinese non-smokers. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study using baseline data from the Guangzhou Biobank Cohort Study: Cardiovascular Disease Sub-cohort Study (GBCS-CVD). Background: Serum antibody to influenza can be used to identify past exposure and measure current immune status. The two most common methods for measuring this are the hemagglutination inhibition assay (HI) and the viral neutralization assay (NT), which have not been systematically compared for a large number of influenza viruses.
Methods: A total of 151 study participants from near Guangzhou, China, were enrolled in 2009 and provided serum.

Blood lipids are important risk factors for coronary artery disease (CAD). Here we perform an exome-wide association study by genotyping 12,685 Chinese, using a custom Illumina HumanExome BeadChip, to identify additional loci influencing lipid levels. Single-variant association analysis on 65,671 single nucleotide polymorphisms reveals 19 loci associated with lipids at exome-wide significance (P<2.

Background: Evidence describing the association between pulmonary function and carotid atherosclerosis has been inconclusive and the role of smoking in this association is unclear. We therefore examined this association in the Guangzhou Biobank Cohort Study-CVD Subcohort.
Methods: Common carotid artery (CCA) intima-media thickness (IMT) and carotid plaques were measured by B-mode ultrasonography and lung function by spirometry using a turbine flowmeter.
