Background/aims: Large language models (LLMs) have substantial potential to enhance the efficiency of academic research. The accuracy and performance of LLMs in a systematic review, a core part of evidence building, has yet to be studied in detail.
Methods: We introduced two LLM-based approaches of systematic review: an LLM-enabled fully automated approach (LLM-FA) utilising three different GPT-4 plugins (Consensus GPT, Scholar GPT and GPT web browsing modes) and an LLM-facilitated semi-automated approach (LLM-SA) using GPT4's Application Programming Interface (API).

Background: Emergence agitation (EA) occurs in preschool children after ophthalmic surgery as eye shields induce visual disturbance. We aimed to investigate the efficacy of light-transmitting eye shields as an alternative to traditional medical gauze eye shields for wound dressing in terms of EA incidence following strabismus surgery.
Methods: We randomly assigned 70 preschool children undergoing bilateral strabismus surgery to receive either light-transmitting (LT group, n = 35) or medical gauze (MG group, n = 35) eye shields upon the completion of surgery.

Daphnane diterpenoids, as one of the representative types of diterpenoid compounds with rich structural diversity and significant biological activities, have an uncommon 5/7/6 tricyclic skeleton mainly found in species of Thymelaeaceae and Euphorbiaceae families. Due to the unique peculiarity of the framework and remarkable pharmacological activities, over the past three decades, novel structures have been continuously discovered and more structural subtypes have been derived. However, there is always a lack of a unified and convincing structural classification strategy for the summary of daphnane diterpenoids, which affects the in-depth and systematic research of pharmaceutical chemists and pharmacologists.

Blastoids are a promising model for studying early human embryogenesis, but current models have limitations in post-implantation development and lack comprehensive epigenetic assessments, especially regarding genomic imprinting. These issues can lead to failures in accurately modeling early embryonic development. In this study, we developed a high-fidelity blastoid model using 4 chemicals + leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) (4CL) naive human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) (4CL blastoids).

Alzheimer's disease (AD), diabetic cognitive impairment (DCI), and vascular dementia (VD) are considered the most common causes of severe cognitive impairment in clinical practice. Numerous factors can influence their progression, and many studies have recently revealed that metabolic disorders play crucial roles in the progression of cognitive impairment. Mounting evidence indicate that the regulation of lipid metabolism is a major factor in maintaining brain homeostasis.

Liver resection represents a main curative treatment for patients with early-stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), but there is a rather high incidence of postoperative HCC relapse, which severely shortens long-term survival time. Currently, no standard adjuvant strategies are available for preventing HCC relapse in clinical practice. Impaired natural killer (NK) cell anti-tumor immunity has been disclosed as a crucial root of HCC relapse, indicating that reinstating NK cell anti-tumor immunity may show promise to curb HCC relapse.

The Human Pangenome Reference Consortium, the Chinese Pangenome Consortium, and other plant and animal pangenome projects have announced the completion of pilot work aimed at constructing high-quality, haplotype-resolved reference graph genomes representative of global ethno-linguistically different populations or different plant and animal species. These graph-based, gapless pangenome references, which are enriched in terms of genomic diversity, completeness, and contiguity, have the potential for enhancing long-read sequencing (LRS)-based genomic research, as well as improving mappability and variant genotyping on traditional short-read sequencing platforms. We comprehensively discuss the advancements in pangenome-based genomic integrative genomic discoveries across forensic-related species (humans, animals, and plants) and summarize their applications in variant identification and forensic genomics, epigenetics, transcriptomics, and microbiome research.

Intracranial optical imaging of glioblastoma (GBM) is challenging due to the scarcity of effective probes with blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability and sufficient imaging depth. Herein, we describe a rational strategy for designing optical probes crossing the BBB based on an electron donor-π-acceptor system to adjust the lipid/water partition coefficient and molecular weight of probes. The amphiphilic hemicyanine dye (namely, IVTPO), which exhibits remarkable optical properties and effective BBB permeability, is chosen as an efficient fluorescence/photoacoustic probe for in vivo real-time imaging of orthotopic GBM with high resolution through the intact skull.

Sarcoma (SARC), a diverse group of stromal tumors arising from mesenchymal tissues, is often associated with a poor prognosis. Emerging evidence indicates that senescent cells within the tumor microenvironment (TME) significantly contribute to cancer progression and metastasis. Although the influence of senescence on SARC has been partially acknowledged, it has yet to be fully elucidated.

Background: Superficial temporal artery (STA)-middle cerebral artery (MCA) side-to-side microvascular anastomosis can achieve the same clinical effects as traditional STA-MCA end-to-side anastomosis in extracranial-intracranial revascularization surgery, furthermore, STA-MCA side-to-side anastomosis has the lower risk of postoperative cerebral hyperperfusion syndrome (CHS) and the potential to recruit all scalp arteries as the donor sources via self-regulation. Therefore, STA-MCA side-to-side microvascular anastomosis seems to be a revascularization strategy superior to traditional STA-MCA end-to-side anastomosis. In this study, we presented seven cases in which a STA-MCA side-to-side microvascular anastomosis was performed with a 4-5 mm long arteriotomy using the in-situ intraluminal suturing technique.

Background: Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is a prevalent condition among women, significantly impairing their quality of life. Emerging evidence suggests that metabolic dysfunction may play a role in the development of SUI, although the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study aims to examine the association between the cardiometabolic index (CMI), a novel marker of metabolic health, and the risk of SUI in women.

Antigen-presenting cells (APCs) process tumor vaccines and present tumor antigens as the first signals to T cells to activate anti-tumor immunity, which process requires the assistance of co-stimulatory second signals on APCs. The immune checkpoint programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) not only mediates the immune escape of tumor cells but also acts as a co-inhibitory second signal on APCs. The serious dysfunction of second signals due to the high expression of PD-L1 on APCs in the tumor body results in the inefficiency of tumor vaccines.
