Purpose: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a common disease with high prevalence, high mortality and high costs across the globe. Small airways are major sites contributing to airway resistance and the small airway disorder (SAD) is frequently implicated in early-stage COPD. Smoking is recognized as the leading cause of COPD and SAD.

Mucosal-associated invariant T (MAIT) cells are known for their rapid effector functions and antibacterial immune protection. Here, we define the plasticity of interferon-γ (IFN-γ)-producing MAIT1 and interleukin-17A (IL-17A)-producing MAIT17 cell subsets in vivo. Whereas T-bet MAIT1 cells remained stable in all experimental settings, after adoptive transfer or acute or infection, RORγt MAIT17 cells could undergo phenotypic and functional conversion into both RORγtT-bet MAIT1/17 and RORγtT-bet MAIT1 cells.

Rationale And Objectives: To investigate the diagnostic value of perfluorobutane-enhanced ultrasound (US) examinations for differentiating benign from malignant subpleural lung lesions.
Methods: This single-center, retrospective study enrolled consecutive patients with subpleural lung lesions between January 2022 and March 2023. The cause of the lung lesions was confirmed by biopsy and follow-up examinations.

Background And Objective: Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is an emerging treatment of lung cancer, yet it is accompanied by certain safety concerns and operational limitations. This first multi-centre, large-scale clinical trial aimed to investigate the technical performance, efficacy and safety of an innovative transbronchial RFA system for lung tumours.
Methods: The study enrolled patients with malignant lung tumours who underwent transbronchial RFA using an automatic saline microperfusion system between January 2021 and December 2021 across 16 medical centres.

Aims/hypothesis: Individuals with diabetes are at high risk of cardiovascular complications, which significantly increase morbidity/mortality. Coronary microvascular disease (CMD) is recognised as a critical contributor to the increased cardiac mortality observed in people with diabetes. Therefore, there is an urgent need for treatments that are specific to CMD.

In invasive lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD), patients with micropapillary (MIP) or solid (SOL) components had a significantly poorer prognosis than those with only lepidic (LEP), acinar (ACI) or papillary (PAP) components. It is interesting to explore the genetic features of different histologic subtypes, especially the highly aggressive components. Based on a cohort of 5,933 patients, this study observed that in different tumor size groups, LUAD with MIP/SOL components showed a different prevalence, and patients with ALK alteration or TP53 mutations had a higher probability of developing MIP/SOL components.

Background: Persistent cough is one of the most common complications following pulmonary resection, that impairs patients' quality of life and prolongs recovery time. However, a comprehensive review of persistent cough after pulmonary resection (CAP) has not been performed.
Methods: A literature search of PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, and Embase database was conducted for persistent-CAP up to June 2023.

In spite of recent advances in the field of undernutrition, current dietary therapy relying on the supply of high protein high calorie formulas is still plagued with transient recovery of impaired organs resulting in significant relapse of cases. This is partly attributed to the inadequacy of current research models in recapitulating clinical undernutrition for mechanistic exploration. Using 1636 Macaca fascicularis monkeys, a human-relevant criterion for determining undernutrition weight-for-age z-score (WAZ), with a cutoff point of ≤ -1.

Background: The parietal pleural adhesion/invasion of lung cancer can contribute substantially to poor prognosis and difficulty in surgery. The value of ultrasound in evaluating the parietal pleural adhesion or invasion (pleural adhesion/invasion) of lung cancer remains uncertain. This study investigated the value of B-mode ultrasound and contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) in diagnosing parietal pleural adhesion/invasion of subpleural lung cancer.

Mucosal-associated invariant T (MAIT) cells are a subset of unconventional T cells that recognize small molecule metabolites presented by major histocompatibility complex class I related protein 1 (MR1), via an αβ T cell receptor (TCR). MAIT TCRs feature an essentially invariant TCR α-chain, which is highly conserved between mammals. Similarly, MR1 is the most highly conserved major histocompatibility complex-I-like molecule.

Purpose: Assessing efficacy of electrical impedance tomography (EIT) in optimizing positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) for acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) patients to enhance respiratory system mechanics and prevent ventilator-induced lung injury (VILI), compared to traditional methods.
Methods: We carried out a systematic review and meta-analysis, spanning literature from January 2012 to May 2023, sourced from Scopus, PubMed, MEDLINE (Ovid), Cochrane, and LILACS, evaluated EIT-guided PEEP strategies in ARDS versus conventional methods. Thirteen studies (3 randomized, 10 non-randomized) involving 623 ARDS patients were analyzed using random-effects models for primary outcomes (respiratory mechanics and mechanical power) and secondary outcomes (PaO/FiO ratio, mortality, stays in intensive care unit (ICU), ventilator-free days).

Background: Chest dynamic digital radiography (DDR) is used as a supplementary tool for the routine pulmonary function test (PFT); however, its potential as a novel standard PFT method has yet to be explored. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the correlation between the change in the projected lung area (ΔPLA) and forced vital capacity (FVC) using chest DDR, and to establish a DDR-FVC estimation model and a predictive value model for the ΔPLA.
Methods: In total, 139 participants who underwent chest DDR and the PFT in the same period at The First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University from April 2022 to February 2023 were prospectively included in the study.

Background: Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has been increasingly used as life support for lung transplantation. However, there are no clinical risk models to predict whether ECMO support is required for lung transplantation. This study developed a simple risk score to predict the need for intraoperative ECMO in patients undergoing lung transplantation, identify high-risk patients who need ECMO support, and guide clinical interventions.
