Stimulant laxatives were recently found to be abused in slimming foods, resulting in harmful effects on consumers. To ensure the safety of relative products, sensitive yet multiplex immunoassays are crucial in rapid screening of stimulant laxatives. However, there are few immunoassays for these substances, and even less for broad-specific recognition.

Article Synopsis
  • Artemisia annua, a traditional Chinese medicine known for producing the anti-malaria drug artemisinin, exhibits diverse traits and genetic variations that complicate consistent artemisinin production.
  • The study aimed to identify strains of A. annua and assess genetic homogeneity using ribosomal DNA (rDNA) characteristics and by analyzing internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) haplotypes.
  • The results revealed unique rDNA features in A. annua, with significant sequence differences among strains, leading to the development of a new method for distinguishing populations based on ITS2 haplotype analysis.

Background: The clinical treatment of ulcerative colitis (UC) is limited. A traditional Chinese medicinal formula, Huangqin decoction (HQD), is chronicled in Shang Han Lun and is widely used to ameliorate gastrointestinal disorders, such as UC; however, its mechanism is yet to be clarified.

Purpose: The present study aimed to investigate the effect of HQD on 7-day colitis induced by 3% dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) in mice and further explore the inhibitory effect of metabolites on DSS-damaged FHC cells.

College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Xiamen University, the MOE Key Laboratory of Spectrochemical Analysis and Instrumentation, Xiamen 361005, China.

Portable analytical instruments find extensive application in on-site examination because of their significant advantages: these instruments are convenient and easy-to-carry, leading to high time-effectiveness, and involve low reagent consumption. We report a portable micro-liquid chromatograph (-μLC) that was designed and fabricated in our laboratory. The -μLC integrates homemade dual large-thrust syringe pumps for delivering the mobile phase, a capillary polymer monolithic column as the stationary phase for the separation of the target analytes, and a specially designed dual-functional optical-fiber microflow-cell for online detection.

Abstract: This study was conducted to establish a rapid and accurate method for identifying aflatoxin contamination in peanut oil. Attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy combined with either partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) or a support vector machine (SVM) algorithm were used to construct discriminative models for distinguishing between uncontaminated and aflatoxin-contaminated peanut oil. Peanut oil samples containing various concentrations of aflatoxin B1 were examined with an ATR-FTIR spectrometer.
