Article Synopsis
  • A systematic review conducted by The Society for Translational Medicine and The Chinese Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery focused on improving postoperative chest tube management for patients post-pulmonary lobectomy.
  • The review produced several key recommendations, including that chest tubes may be safely removed with daily pleural fluid up to 450 mL and that only one chest tube is typically sufficient unless complications arise.
  • It also advised against certain practices like suctioning after the first postoperative day and using milking or stripping techniques, while endorsing the use of electronic drainage systems for better management.

Patients undergoing lobectomy are at significantly increased risk of lung injury. One-lung ventilation is the most commonly used technique to maintain ventilation and oxygenation during the operation. It is a challenge to choose an appropriate mechanical ventilation strategy to minimize the lung injury and other adverse clinical outcomes.

Background: Composite pheochromocytoma, which is a tumor composed of ordinary pheochromocytoma and other components, is extremely rare in bladder. We present a case of this rarely seen tumor in bladder, and discuss the clinical features, behavior, pathologic findings, essentials of diagnosis and prognosis of this tumor after literature review.

Methods: Specimens from a 55-year-old woman with primary composite pheochromocytoma in bladder were analyzed by immunohistochemical (IHC) and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH).

Purpose: To investigate the efficacy and safety of laparoscopic simultaneous resections of colorectal cancer and synchronous colorectal liver metastases (SCRLM), relative to open surgery.

Methods: Between 1 January 2009 and 20 April 2014, 20 of 25 patients who underwent laparoscopic simultaneous colorectal cancer and SCRLM resections were matched with 20 of 29 patients who underwent an open approach, based on prognostic propensity scores. Perioperative results and survival outcomes were compared.

Research Center for Medical Image Computing, Department of Imaging and Interventional Radiology, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shatin, New Territories, Hong Kong, China.

Background: Dual-source computed tomography (DSCT) is a very effective way for diagnosis and treatment of heart disease. The quantitative information of spatiotemporal DSCT images can be important for the evaluation of cardiac function. To avoid the shortcoming of manual delineation, it is imperative to develop an automatic segmentation technique for 4D cardiac images.

Nonrigid Registration Regularized by Shape Information: Application to Atlas Construction of Cardiac CT Images.

PLoS One

April 2016

Research Center for Medical Image Computing, Department of Imaging and Interventional Radiology, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shatin, New Territories, Hong Kong, China; Shenzhen Research Institute, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, China.

Cardiac atlases play an important role in the computer-aided diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases, in particular they need to deal with large and highly variable image datasets. In this paper, we propose a new nonrigid registration algorithm incorporating shape information, to produce comprehensive atlases. For one thing, the multiscale gradient orientation features of images are combined to form the construction of multifeature mutual information.

Targeting miR-21 sensitizes Ph+ ALL Sup-b15 cells to imatinib-induced apoptosis through upregulation of PTEN.

Biochem Biophys Res Commun

November 2014

Guangdong Province Key Laboratory of Pharmaceutical Bioactive Substances, School of Basic Courses, Guangdong Pharmaceutical University, Guangzhou, People's Republic of China. Electronic address:

Philadelphia chromosome positive (Ph+) acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) cells are insensitive to BCR-ABL tyrosine kinase inhibitor imatinib, the underlying mechanisms remain largely unknown. Here, we showed that imatinib treatment induced significant upregulation of miR-21 and downregulation of PTEN in Ph+ ALL cell line Sup-b15. Transient inhibition of miR-21 resulted in increased apoptosis, PTEN upregulation and AKT dephosphorylation, whereas ectopic overexpression of miR-21 further conferred imatinib resistance.

Machado-Joseph disease (MJD) is caused by a (CAG)n trinucleotide repeat expansion that is translated into an abnormally long polyglutamine tract. This disease is considered the most common form of spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA). In the present study, we developed stable inducible cell lines (PC12Tet-On-Ataxin-3-Q28/84) expressing ataxin-3 with either normal or abnormal CAG repeats under doxycycline control.

Tibial defect is generally caused by high-energy injury, tumor, osteomyelitis, development deformity and bone non-union after internal fixation. This study was to determine stability of tibial defect reconstruction with fibular graft (FG) of different lengths by single free vascularized fibular graft (SFVFG) and double-barrel free vascularized fibular graft (DBFVFG). The left lower extremity of a male volunteer was scanned with computer tomography scanner.

Syphilitic bone destruction on FDG PET/CT.

Clin Nucl Med

July 2011

Department of Nuclear Medicine, Guangzhou General Hospital of Guangzhou Military Area Command, Guangzhou, Guangdong, People's Republic of China.

A 35-year-old man underwent PET/CT scan to evaluate suspected osseous metastases from a presumed tumor of unknown origin. PET images demonstrated multiple foci of increased FDG uptake in all extremities, corresponding to the osseous destruction on the concurrent CT images. However, no primary tumor was identified.
