Hemoglobin

January 2021

Department of Hematology, Dongguan Houjie Hospital, Dongguan, Guangdong Province, People's Republic of China.

We detected a novel frameshift variant (: c.263delA) and - - (Southeast Asian), deletion in a 28-year-old Chinese woman with α-thalassemia (α-thal). This novel variant (a single nucleotide deletion at nucleotide 263 of codon 87) was detected by targeted next generation sequencing (NSG), resulting in a stop codon at amino acid 102 in exon 2 of the gene.

Background: There is increasing evidence that dietary intake of sugars may be a risk factor for prostate cancer (PCa) and elevate the concentration of serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA). However, there is limited evidence of the correlation between total dietary intake of sugars and serum PSA concentrations for adult American males. Herein, we evaluated the association between total dietary intake of sugars and serum PSA concentrations in men without a malignant tumor diagnosis in the United States (US) National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database.

Aberrant T cell activation is a major cause of aplastic anemia (AA) pathogenesis. Recent studies have shown that miRNAs regulate T cell activation and are involved in AA. A previous study found that miR-214 was significantly up-regulated upon T cell activation in a CD28-dependent fashion by targeting PTEN.

Determination of Serum Exosomal H19 as a Noninvasive Biomarker for Breast Cancer Diagnosis.

Onco Targets Ther

March 2020

Department of Breast Surgery, Guangxi Medical University Cancer Hospital, Nanning, China; Department of General Surgery, The Langdong Hospital of Guangxi Medical University, Nanning, People's Republic of China.

Purpose: There is an urgent need for new biomarkers for the diagnosis of breast cancer. Exosomes can communicate with cells through transport molecules, including long-chain noncoding RNA (lncRNA), which is considered as a promising noninvasive biomarker. Here, we aimed to determine the potential of long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) H19 in the circulating exosomes for the diagnosis of breast cancer (BC).

Gene expression profile of cancer stem‑like cells in the SW480 colon adenocarcinoma cell line.

Oncol Rep

July 2019

Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Gastroenterology, Department of Gastroenterology, Nanfang Hospital, Southern Medical University, Guangzhou, Guangdong 510515, P.R. China.

Cancer stem cells (CSCs) serve an important role in tumorigenesis, tolerance to treatment, relapse and metastasis. Although the signaling pathways involved in cancer are well known, the molecular mechanisms underlying CSC actions require further investigation. In the present study, a population of colon CSCs with a cluster of differentiation 133 (CD133) surface‑expression phenotype from the human SW480 colon adenocarcinoma cell line were isolated by flow cytometry.

Increased CD8CD27perforin T cells and decreased CD8CD70 T cells may be immune biomarkers for aplastic anemia severity.

Blood Cells Mol Dis

July 2019

Key Laboratory for Regenerative Medicine of Ministry of Education, Institute of Hematology, School of Medicine, Jinan University, Guangzhou, China; Institute of Hematology, School of Medicine, Jinan University, Guangzhou, China. Electronic address:

Objectives: Aplastic anemia (AA) is T cell immune-mediated autoimmune disease. Aberrant T cell activation involves an imbalance in T cell homeostasis in AA. However, whether the T cell activation molecule CD27 and its ligand CD70 participate in the immune pathogenesis of AA remains ill defined.

sFRP1 exerts effects on gastric cancer cells through GSK3β/Rac1‑mediated restraint of TGFβ/Smad3 signaling.

Oncol Rep

January 2019

Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery, Guangzhou First People's Hospital, The Second Affiliated Hospital of South China University of Technology, Guangzhou, Guangdong 510180, P.R. China.

Secreted frizzled‑related protein 1 (sFRP1) is an inhibitor of canonical Wnt signaling; however, previous studies have determined a tumor‑promoting function of sFRP1 in a number of different cancer types. A previous study demonstrated that sFRP1 overexpression was associated with an aggressive phenotype and the activation of transforming growth factor β (TGFβ) signaling. sFRP1 overexpression and sFRP1 knockdown cell models were established.

About 10% of gastric carcinomas are associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), which are defined as EBV-associated gastric carcinomas (EBVaGCs). EBVaGCs are usually accompanied by massive lymphocytes infiltration, among which CD8 T cells are predominant. To date, the apoptosis of the infiltrating CD8 T cells in EBVaGC has not been investigated.

Objective: This double-blind, placebo-controlled phase 3 study was designed to compare efficacy and safety of abiraterone acetate + prednisone (abiraterone) to prednisone alone in chemotherapy-naïve, asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) patients from China, Malaysia, Thailand and Russia.

Methods: Adult chemotherapy-naïve patients with confirmed prostate adenocarcinoma, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) performance status (PS) grade 0-1, ongoing androgen deprivation (serum testosterone <50 ng/dL) with prostate specific antigen (PSA) or radiographic progression were randomized to receive abiraterone acetate (1000 mg, QD) + prednisone (5 mg, BID) or placebo + prednisone (5 mg, BID), until disease progression, unacceptable toxicity or consent withdrawal. Primary endpoint was improvements in time to PSA progression (TTPP).
