This study describes HIV disease burden and patterns of drug use before and during incarceration among detainees in Re-education-Through-Labour-Camps (RTLCs) in China. A cross-sectional survey of 576 men and 179 women from three RTLCs was conducted in Guangxi Province, China. Over three-quarters of study participants were detained due to drug-related offences.

Background: Global literature indicates the burden of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), syphilis and hepatitis C virus (HCV) has disproportionately affected cross-border migrant female sex workers (FSW). However, few studies reported the HIV risk among Vietnamese FSW at borderline areas in China. We examined five consecutive years of HIV, syphilis, and HCV prevalence and corresponding risk factors among this group in Guangxi Province of China in the current study.

The current study examines demographic and behavioral risk factors as well as the infections of HIV, syphilis, and among a subgroup of FSWs who are injection drug users (IDU) or noninjection drug users (NIDU) in comparison to Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) nondrug users (non-DU). We conducted secondary analysis of the 2010 National Sentinel Surveillance (NSS) data from Guangxi China.

Objective: Knowledge about the profile of neutralization responses and the viral envelope features of HIV-1-infected individuals in China may provide new insights for vaccine design against local viruses.
Methods: Eight hundred sixty plasma samples from antiretroviral treatment-naive HIV-1-infected individuals in Xinjiang province (611) and Guangxi province (249), who had acquired infection over 3 years through intravenous drug use or sexual contact, were examined for their ability to neutralize diverse envelope-pseudoviruses of 5 subtypes. The sequence features of the envelopes from elite neutralizers were analyzed.

Female sex workers (FSWs) play a key role in HIV/AIDS transmission and their gatekeepers play a crucial role in shaping their behaviors. Limited studies are available on the relationship between FSWs and gatekeepers. In the current study we used an ethnographic approach to examine the dynamic and multidimensional relationship of FSWs and their gatekeepers from the perspectives of both parties.

Background: Men who have sex with men (MSM) represent the fastest growing key population for incident HIV cases in China. We examined five consecutive years of HIV and syphilis prevalence and risk factors data among MSM in Guangxi Province with the second highest estimated number of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHAs) in China in 2011.
Methods: We collected demographic and behavioral data from national sentinel surveillance and HIV/syphilis blood samples in five annual cross-sectional surveys from 2008 to 2012.
Background: Guangxi has become one of the provinces with the most severe HIV-1 epidemic in China, where heterosexual contact is the dominant transmission route. However, data of acute HIV infections and HIV incidence among female sex workers (FSWs) from low-grade venues are scant.
Methods: A cross-sectional survey was performed among FSWs from low-grade venues in Guangxi.

Previous literature suggests a high rate of HIV infections among older female sex workers (FSWs) in China. However, limited data are available regarding HIV- related behavioral risk factors among this population. In the current study, we aim to examine the demographic and behavioral factors that place older FSWs at a high risk of HIV infection.

Background: With the extended lifespan of people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) due to the advent of antiretroviral therapy, the disclosure of HIV serostatus to their uninfected children is becoming more critical. However, limited data are available regarding parental HIV disclosure to children in China. We explore patterns of parental HIV disclosure and the reasons for disclosure or non-disclosure to children.

This was a randomized safety/immunogenicity evaluation of PCV7 primary series at 3, 4, 5 months in healthy Chinese infants. Eight hundred subjects were randomized to Group 1 (PCV7 > or =7 days before DTaP), or Group 2 (PCV7 with DTaP), or Group 3 (DTaP only). Erythema and induration/swelling were recorded at the PCV7 injection site at any individual dose in no more than 12% and 8% of subjects, respectively, and neither exceeded 2.
