Department of Immunology and Microbiology, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, Shanghai Institute of Immunology, Shanghai 200025, China. Electronic address:

γ-Tocotrienol (GT3), a member of the vitamin E family, is well known for its medicinal value in clinical treatments. However, the role of GT3 in T helper 17 (Th17)/regulatory T cell (Treg) differentiation and function is not fully understood. Here, we demonstrated that GT3 suppressed Th17 differentiation in vitro by inhibiting signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) phosphorylation in the interleukin 6 (IL-6)/Janus kinase (JAK)/STAT3 signaling pathway.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease accompanied by metabolic alterations. The metabolic profiles of patients with RA can be determined using targeted and non-targeted metabolomics technology. Metabolic changes in glucose, lipid, and amino acid levels are involved in glycolysis, the tricarboxylic acid cycle, the pentose phosphate pathway, the arachidonic acid metabolic pathway, and amino acid metabolism.

New evidence suggests that the clinical success of chemotherapy is not merely due to tumor cell toxicity but also arises from the restoration of immunosurveillance, which has been immensely neglected in previous preclinical and clinical researches. There is an urgent need for novel insights into molecular mechanisms and regimens that uplift the efficacy of immunotherapy since only a minority of cancer patients are responsive to immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs). Recent findings on combination therapy of chemotherapy and ICIs have shown promising results.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease that severely affects patients' physical and mental health, leading to chronic synovitis and destruction of bone joints. Although various available clinical treatment options exist, patients respond with varying efficacies due to multiple factors, and there is an urgent need to discover new treatment options to improve clinical outcomes. Cuproptosis is a newly characterized form of cell death.

Association of Arterial Stiffness Indices with Framingham Cardiovascular Disease Risk Score.

Rev Cardiovasc Med

August 2022

Department of Ultrasound, Shanghai General Hospital Jiading Branch, Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine, 201812 Shanghai, China.

Purpose: The new non-invasive arterial stiffness indices, arterial velocity pulse index (AVI) and arterial pressure volume index (API) are known to be associated with cardiovascular disease risk. The present study aimed to examine the "dose-response" associations between AVI, API and Framingham cardiovascular disease risk score (FCVRS).

Methods: This survey included individuals with arterial stiffness indices collected at age 18 years and older.

Introduction: Osteoporosis is related to lncRNA-neighboring enhancer of FOXA2 (NEF) and inversely correlated to ankylosing spondylitis (AS), implying that lncRNA-NEF might also relate to AS. Thus, the study was carried out to investigate the involvement of lncRNA-NEF in AS.

Methods: The study included 60 AS patients and 60 healthy controls.

Hyperuricemia and gout are complex diseases mediated by genetic, epigenetic, and environmental exposure interactions. The incidence and medical burden of gout, an inflammatory arthritis caused by hyperuricemia, increase every year, significantly increasing the disease burden. Genetic factors play an essential role in the development of hyperuricemia and gout.

Background: Chinese medicine (CM) has become a popular interventional treatment for rheumatoid arthritis (RA). However, limited knowledge about general characteristics and long-term clinical outcomes hampers the development of CM for RA.

Purpose: The main objectives of the China Rheumatoid Arthritis Registry of Patients with Chinese Medicine (CERTAIN) were to describe the population of RA patients receiving CM treatment in multiple centers in China using different variables and compare these findings with internationally reported data.

Secreted frizzled-related protein 1 (SFRP1) is a member of secretory glycoprotein SFRP family. As a primitive gene regulating cell growth, development and transformation, SFRP1 is widely expressed in human cells, including various cancer cells and fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLS) of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Deletion or silencing of SFRP1 involves epigenetic and other mechanisms, and participates in biological behaviors such as cell proliferation, migration and cell pyroptosis, which leads to disease progression and poor prognosis.

The liver is essential for metabolic and immune functions and has been linked to systemic inflammatory diseases. However, the role of the liver is still elusive during the development of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), although there have been indeed some reports. We used label-free quantitative proteomics and experimental verification in this study to reveal the hepatic lipid metabolism and immune function during collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) development.

Rhubarb free anthraquinones improved mice nonalcoholic fatty liver disease by inhibiting NLRP3 inflammasome.

J Transl Med

June 2022

Key Laboratory of Liver and Kidney Diseases (Ministry of Education), Institute of Liver Diseases, Shuguang Hospital, Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, No.528 Zhangheng Road Pudong New District, Shanghai, 201203, China.

Article Synopsis
  • * The study investigated the effects of rhubarb free anthraquinones (RFAs) on NAFLD, finding that RFAs effectively inhibit the NLRP3 inflammasome and improve liver function in lab models.
  • * Results showed RFAs reduced levels of interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) and improved various markers of liver health, suggesting they could be a viable therapy for NAFLD.

Background: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic and refractory autoimmune disease. Deficiency pattern (DP) and excess pattern (EP), as crucial types of Chinese medicine pattern diagnoses published by International Classification of Diseases 11th Revision (ICD-11), could provide new strategies for RA diagnosis. However, the biological basis of DP and EP of RA is not explicit.

The activated c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) specifically combined with SH3 domain-binding protein 5 (Sab) may mediate damage to the mitochondrial respiratory chain. Whether mitochondrial dysfunction induced by the JNK/Sab signaling pathway plays a pivotal role in the lipotoxic injury of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) remains a lack of evidence. Scoparone, a natural compound from Traditional Chinese Medicine herbs, has the potential for liver protection and lipid metabolism regulation.
