Article Synopsis
  • Recent advances in understanding ependymomas have highlighted gaps in knowledge about their molecular evolution, particularly during tumor recurrence.
  • A detailed analysis of tumor samples from a 19-year-old patient who experienced multiple recurrences revealed significant genetic diversity and an evolving mutation landscape, emphasizing the complexity of the disease.
  • Notably, the gene ADGRL3 was consistently mutated across all tumor samples in this case, indicating its potential role in ependymoma progression, while lower levels of ADGRL3 expression were linked to poorer survival outcomes in other patients.

Cinnamon is a wildly used traditional Chinese herbal medicine for osteoarthritis (OA) treatment, but the underlying mechanism remains ambiguous. The purpose of this study is to explore the mechanism of cinnamic aldehyde (CA), a bioactive substance extracted from Cinnamon, on synovial inflammation in OA. A total of 144 CA-OA co-targeted genes were identified by detect databases (PubChem, HIT, TCMSP, TTD, DrugBank and GeneCards).

A H NMR-based metabonomic approach was applied to monitor the alterations of serum metabolic profiles in MMTV-PyMT transgenic mice to detect the dynamic changes associated with the pathological process and explore the early-stage biomarkers. The H NMR spectra of sera samples from four different stages in MMTV-PyMT mice including hyperplasia, adenoma, early carcinoma and late carcinoma stages were recorded and analyzed using multivariate statistical techniques. The results showed that the increased levels of lipid and lactate, and decreased leucine/isoleucine, valine, methionine, glutamine, creatine, PC/GPC, taurine and glucose were of significance for the early carcinoma stage.

Objective: To investigate the effect of Danhong Tongjing Prescription (DTP) on sperm quality in patients with bilateral varicocele (VC) after microsurgical varicocelectomy.

Methods: We randomly assigned 68 patients with bilateral VC to receive microsurgical varicocelectomy (the control group, n = 34) or microsurgical varicocelectomy followed by oral administration of DTP for a course of 90 days (the DTP group, n = 34). Before and after treatment, we obtained the sperm concentration, total sperm count, total sperm motility, the percentage of progressively motile sperm (PMS), sperm acrosomal enzyme activity, inhibin B (Inh-B) level, and sperm DNA fragmentation index (DFI) from the patients and compared the parameters between the two groups.

Atherosclerosis (AS) is a typical vascular disease. Emerging evidence has shown that circRNAs play key roles in the progression of AS, but the potential function and underlying mechanism of hsa_circ_0001879 remains unknown. We detected the expression level of hsa_circ_0001879 was determined by qRT-PCR, and the proliferation rate and migration ability of HUVECs were measured by CCK-8 assay and Transwell assay, respectively.

Integrative oncology has developed for about 20 years in some countries; however, integrative oncology is still a relative new term for most China's oncologists. Thus, it is essential to summarize the experience and expertise, share details of differing existing models and discuss future perspectives to help define and guide practice in integrative oncology in China. This study presents a summary of the basic characteristics, status, and challenges of integrative oncology in China, and also reports on China's integrative physicians' service delivery, clinical practice and research patterns of integrative oncology by an online national survey, including 405 oncologists.

Background: Whereas there are many pharmacological interventions prescribed for patients with advanced anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK)- rearranged non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), comparative data between novel generation ALK-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) remain scant. Here, we indirectly compared the efficacy and safety of first-line systemic therapeutic options used for the treatment of ALK-rearranged NSCLC.

Methods: We included all phase 2 and 3 randomised controlled trials (RCTs) comparing any two or three treatment options.

Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • A Bayesian network meta-analysis was conducted to compare the effectiveness and tolerability of different treatments for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF), focusing on combinations of antiarrhythmic drugs and traditional Chinese formulas.
  • 59 randomized controlled trials with over 5,500 patients were analyzed, revealing that the Shensong-Yangxin capsule (SSYX) plus amiodarone was the most effective treatment for maintaining sinus rhythm, followed by Wenxin-Keli granules (WXKL) plus amiodarone.
  • The study concludes that the combination of antiarrhythmic agents with traditional Chinese formulas is more effective and has fewer side effects, providing a reference for improved treatment strategies for PAF.

More than 20 types of ALK fusion variant subtypes have been identified, including different fusion partner genes or EML4-ALK fusions with different breakpoints. However, different ALK fusions show different sensitivities to ALK-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (ALK-TKIs) and the emergence of rare fusions brings great challenges to the target therapy in clinic. We report a rare EML4-ALK (E6;A18) fusion in a patient with lung adenocarcinoma that responded well to alectinib.

Traditionally, breast cancer patients with centrally located mass always receive mastectomy or the combination of central excision and primary closure. With the development of modern oncoplastic breast-conserving techniques, these patients can conserve their breast, and achieve satisfactory cosmetic outcome as well as clear margin. A variety of techniques are available to deal with centrally located breast cancers (CLBCs).

Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery II, Guangdong Provincial Research Center for Artificial Organ and Tissue Engineering, Guangzhou Clinical Research and Transformation Center for Artificial Liver, Institute of Regenerative Medicine, Zhujiang Hospital, Southern Medical University, Guangzhou, China.

Pancreatic cancer is one of the major malignancies and causes of mortality worldwide. E3 ubiquitin-protein ligases transfer activated ubiquitin from ubiquitin-conjugating enzymes to protein substrates and confer substrate specificity in cancer. In this study, we first downloaded data from The Cancer Genome Atlas pancreatic adenocarcinoma dataset, acquired all 27 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), and identified genomic alterations.

ΔCT Value of Amplified Refractory Mutation System Predicts Efficacy of EGFR-TKIs in Advanced Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer: A Multi-Center Retrospective Study.

Front Mol Biosci

October 2021

Chronic Airways Diseases Laboratory, Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Nanfang Hospital, Southern Medical University, Guangzhou, China.

This multi-center retrospective study determines whether the ΔCT value of the Amplified Refractory Mutation System (ARMS) predicts the efficacy of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) in EGFR-mutant advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Patients who harbored an exon 19 deletion (19Del) or L858R mutation detected by the ARMS and previously received treatment of EGFR-TKIs as a monotherapy were enrolled. A total of 108 NSCLC patients in four hospitals were enrolled.

Introduction: Patients with frequent acute exacerbation phenotype chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) have a higher hospitalisation rate than infrequent exacerbation, the disease progresses quickly and treatment is more difficult. At present, it is impossible to predict patients with COPD with frequent acute exacerbation phenotypes. The composition of the lower respiratory tract flora and the intestinal flora is closely related to AECOPD, but the specific association mechanism between them is not very clear.
