A simple, rapid and accurate liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry method was developed and validated for quantification of dihydroartemisinin (DHA) in human plasma. Following a simple single-step liquid-liquid extraction with ethyl acetate, the analyte was separated on a C(18) column by isocratic elution with methanol-water-10mM ammonium acetate (80:10:10, v/v/v), and analyzed by mass spectrometry in the positive ion MRM mode. Good linearity was achieved over a wide range of 1.

Objective: To investigate the regulatory effect of procyanidins (PC) on the expressions of Th1 type cytokines (IFN-gamma and IL-12) and the transcription factor T-bet mRNA in peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) in patients with alopecia areata (AA).

Methods: Above-mentioned expressions were detected using RT-PCR technique in 20 AA patients (8 of mild and 12 of severe degree) and 10 healthy subjects after phytoaemagglutinin (PHA) or PHA + PC stimulation.

Results: After being stimulated by PHA and PHA + PC, in patients with severe AA, the expression of T-bet mRNA was 0.

[Analysis of prescription for special disease/syndrome--compatibility of absorbed/metabolized components from original formula--a thinking of research].

Zhongguo Zhong Xi Yi Jie He Za Zhi

September 2008

The Second Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou TCM University, Guangdong Provincial Hospital of TCM, Guangdong Provincial Academy of Chinese Medicinal Sciences, Guangzhou.

What is the pharmacodynamic active components in Chinese medical prescription is a key problem in urgent need to solve for the development of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). A new thinking of TCM research, "analysis of prescription for special disease/syndrome--compatibility of absorbed/metabolized components from original prescription", was proposed firstly, to analyze and seek out the components or metabolites originated from the administered prescription in blood serum of the organisms with special disease and syndrome. Secondly, to study the compatibility of these absorbed/metabolized components.

Objective: To observe the clinical therapeutic effect of acupuncture on depressive neurosis.

Methods: With a multi-center randomized controlled study, 440 cases were randomly divided into an acupuncture group, a prozac group, a non-acupoint needling group. In the acupuncture group, Hegu (LI 4) and Taichong (LR 3) were selected, and the Prozac group were treated with administration of 20 mg/d and the non-acupoint needling group were treated with needling the points deviating from the acupoints.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to investigate diagnostic criteria for Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) syndromes in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD).
  • Researchers analyzed data from 319 CHD patients, using various statistical methods to identify characteristic symptoms associated with different TCM syndromes, such as qi deficiency and phlegm blockage.
  • The findings suggest that establishing diagnostic figures for TCM syndromes can be based on clinical epidemiology, statistical analysis, and expert opinions, providing a reference for further research.

Objective: To probe the effect of previous analgesia of scalp acupuncture.

Methods: Sixty cases of radical operation of intestinal cancer were randomly divided into 2 groups: a scalp acupuncture plus epidural analgesia (scalp acupuncture group) and an epidural analgesia group, 30 cases in each group. The scalp acupuncture group received scalp acupuncture from 20 min before operation to the end of the operation, and epidural analgesia at the end of the operation.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to investigate traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndrome distributions in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) by conducting a clinical survey with 319 inpatients.
  • Qi deficiency was identified as the most prevalent syndrome among CHD patients (87.1%), followed by blood stasis and phlegm retention syndromes, which were also significant (79.9% and 78.7% respectively).
  • The research found that there was no notable difference in tongue and pulse characteristics related to specific coronary artery branches, and blood-lipid levels were similar across different TCM syndrome types, suggesting a common underlying pathogenesis centered on qi deficiency.

Objective: To explore the effects of dialysate contained Chinese herbs for replenishing qi and activating blood circulation on platelet membranous glycoprotein CD62P in patients with chronic renal failure (CRF) undergoing hemodialysis.

Methods: Forty patients underwent maintaining hemodialysis were randomly assigned to two groups, the Western medicated group (WMG) and the Chinese herbs group (CHG). The content of CD62P in all patients was detected by ELISA before and after hemodialysis.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the impact of Shenfu Injection (SI) on immune function in patients undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB).
  • Ninety patients were divided into three groups (A, B, and C), with different timings for SI administration, and key immune markers were measured at various stages around the operation.
  • Findings indicated that while leukocyte and neutrophil counts increased immediately after CPB, immune function metrics showed a decline, with groups A and B showing better recovery by the 8th post-operative day, suggesting SI may enhance immune responses and lower infection risks after surgery.

Objective: To study on regulative action of scalp acupuncture on oxidative stress reaction at operation stage.

Methods: Fifty two cases selected for radical operation of intestinal cancer were randomly divided into a scalp acupuncture plus general anesthesia (scalp acupuncture group) and a simple general anesthesia group (general anesthesia group), 26 cases in each group. The scalp acupuncture group were treated first with scalp acupuncture for 20 min, followed by general anesthesia, with scalp acupuncture lasted till the end of operation.

Objective: To explore the effect of extracted liquid from Qianlietongyu on the proliferation or apoptosis on prostatic smooth muscle cells in vitro.

Methods: After extracted liquid from Qianlietongyu treated the cultured prostatic smooth muscle cells, the anti proliferative and apoptotic indices were assessed by MTT assy and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase mediated dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) respectively.

Results: There was a significant dose-effect relationship between the concentration of extracted liquid from Qianlietongyu and the antiproliferative index on prostatic smooth muscle cells in vitro (P < 0.

Objective: To investigate the abnormal change of immune function in patients with Pi-Qi deficiency Syndrome, and to explore the genomic mechanism of its genesis by cDNA chip techniques.

Methods: The cross probe was made by extracting and microamplifying the total RNA and mRNA of peripheral white blood cells (WBC) in healthy subjects and patients with chronic gastritis and ulcerative colitis, which were labeled by Cy3 and Cy5 respectively. Then equal quantity of the two labeled probes were mixed and hybridized with cDNA chip, fluorescent signal of the chips were scanned with scanner.

Objective: To explore the effect and mechanism of Tongguan capsule (TGC) on coagulant and fibrinolysis system in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).

Methods: Adopting the prospective, randomized controlled method to observe the coagulant-fibrinolysis related indexes, including tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA), plasminogen activator inhibitor 1 (PAI-1), von Willebrand factor (vWF), antithrombin II (AT-III) and fibrinogen (FIB), in CHD patients after PCI, there were 26 patients in the treated group treated by TGC with Western medicine and 26 in the control group treated by Western medicine alone.

Results: After treatment, all the indexes were improved in both groups (P < 0.
