Osteophyte formation, a key indicator of osteoarthritis (OA) severity, remains poorly understood in its relation to gut microbiota and metabolites in knee osteoarthritis (KOA). We conducted 16S rDNA sequencing and untargeted metabolomics on fecal and serum samples from 20 healthy volunteers, 80 KOA patients in Guangdong, and 100 in Inner Mongolia, respectively. Through bioinformatics analysis, we identified 3 genera and 5 serum metabolites associated with KOA osteophyte formation.

A candidate reference measurement procedure (RMP) for serum theophylline via isotope dilution liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) was developed. With a single-step precipitation pretreatment and a 6-min gradient elution, the method achieved baseline separation of theophylline and its analogs on a C18-packed column. A bracketing calibration method was used to ensure repeatable signal intensity and high measurement precision.

The characteristic features of the rheumatoid arthritis (RA) microenvironment are synovial inflammation and hyperplasia. Therefore, there is a growing interest in developing a suitable therapeutic strategy for RA that targets the synovial macrophages and fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLSs). In this study, we used graphene oxide quantum dots (GOQDs) for loading anti-arthritic sinomenine hydrochloride (SIN).

Article Synopsis
  • Lymph node metastasis is crucial for assessing colorectal cancer (CRC) stage, treatment, and outcomes, with morphological differences helping predict metastasis risk.
  • A study analyzed tissue from 426 CRC patients, comparing tumor features at the invasive front of the primary tumor and lymph node metastases to identify correlations between tumor characteristics and metastasis.
  • Findings indicate that tumor budding (TB) and poorly-differentiated clusters (PDC) significantly correlate with lymph node metastasis incidence, with higher levels of TB and PDC greatly increasing the risk of metastasis and severity.

Oxyberberine (OBB) is a significant natural compound, with excellent hepatoprotective properties. However, the poor water solubility of OBB hinders its release and absorption thus resulting in low bioavailability. To overcome these drawbacks of OBB, amorphous spray-dried powders (ASDs) of OBB were formulated.

Background: The uncertainty surrounding whether delaying surgery after self-expandable metal stent (SEMS) placement for neoplastic stricture can yield similar oncologic outcomes as elective surgery remains. This study aims to investigate the impact of elective surgery following SEMS placement for obstructive colorectal cancer (OCC) on patients.

Methods: Patients diagnosed with stage I to III colorectal cancer (CRC) were recruited and randomly allocated into two groups: group A, receiving elective surgery after SEMS placement for obstructive colon cancer, and group B, undergoing elective surgery for non-obstructive colorectal cancer.

Tongmai Sini decoction (TSD), the classical prescriptions of traditional Chinese medicine, consisting of three commonly used herbal medicines, has been widely applied for the treatment of myocardial infarction and heart failure. However, the absorbed components and their metabolism in vivo of TSD still remain unknown. In this study, a reliable and effective method using ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with hybrid quadrupole-Orbitrap mass spectrometry (UHPLC-Q-Exactive-MS/MS) was employed to identify prototype components and metabolites in vivo (rat plasma and urine).

  • The study aimed to visualize the spatial distribution of femoral head necrosis using a new measurement method called the longitude and latitude division system (LLDS).
  • Researchers analyzed CT data from 108 hips with non-traumatic osteonecrosis, creating a computer-aided design tool to visualize necrotic lesions in both 2D and 3D heat maps.
  • Results indicated that the LLDS has high reliability, revealing concentrated clustering of necrotic lesions in specific regions of the femoral head, particularly in type C lesions, which helps in understanding the differences between subtypes C1 and C2.
