Distant metastasis is the primary cause of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) treatment failure while epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is the critical process of NPC invasion and metastasis. However, tumor-suppressor genes involved in the EMT and metastasis of NPC have not been explored clearly compared with the oncogenes. In the present study, the expression of pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF), a potent endogenous antitumor factor, was diminished in human NPC tissues and associated with clinicopathological and EMT features.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the correlation between glucocorticoid activity regulation, prostaglandin E2 (PGE) synthesis, and synovial inflammation inhibition activity, through microsomal prostaglandin E synthase-1 (mPGES-1) expression regulated by the glucocorticoid pre-receptor regulator, 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase-1 (11β-HSD1). In the present study, fibroblast-like synovial cells of rats were studied as a cell model. This study aims to determine whether the time-frequency components (TFCs) of somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) can be used to identify the specific location of a compressive spinal cord injury using a classification technique. Waveforms of SEPs after compressive injuries at various locations (C4, C5 and C6) in rat spinal cords were decomposed into a series of TFCs using a high-resolution time-frequency analysis method. Nitric oxide contributes to protection from tuberculosis. It is generally assumed that this protection is due to direct inhibition of Mycobacterium tuberculosis growth, which prevents subsequent pathological inflammation. In contrast, we report that nitric oxide primarily protects mice by repressing an interleukin-1- and 12/15-lipoxygenase-dependent neutrophil recruitment cascade that promotes bacterial replication.

Lung cancer is the most frequent cause of mortality in cancer patients; non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) accounts for ~80% of lung cancer cases. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have been revealed to perform an important role in cancer development and progression. Based on a custom miRNA microarray analysis of patients with NSCLC, miRNA-615-3p (miR-615-3p) downregulation was identified in NSCLC tissues compared with normal lung tissues, which suggested that miR-615-3p acted as a tumor suppressor in lung cancer.

We compared the frequency of gastrointestinal (GI) pathogen detection in an oncology patient population by two multiplexed molecular assays, the Luminex xTAG® Gastrointestinal Pathogen Panel (GPP, which identifies 14 GI pathogens) and the BioFire Gastrointestinal Panel (BFGP, which identifies 22 GI pathogens). We additionally reviewed the clinical characteristics of patients tested with both panels. A total of 200 prospectively collected and 81 archived stool samples were tested by both panels.

To establish a method for monitoring the surface blood flow in the heart of rats, and to clarify the relationship between the degree of myocardial infarction and the blood perfusion on the surface of the heart, so as to provide a new indicator for the identification of rat myocardial infarction model. The rats were divided into control group (=23) and model group (=107), the rat hearts were scanned by the laser doppler perfusion imager before and after operation respectively, and the data was analyzed to acquire the rate of surface blood flow change of the heart. Myocardial infarction size of model group was detected by NBT.
