Salvia miltiorrhiza, a widely used traditional Chinese medicine, contains a complex matrix of hydrophobic diterpenoids and hydrophilic phenolic acids, presenting significant challenges in comprehensive analysis. In this study, an online polarity-partitioned two-dimensional liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (2D-LC-MS) method was developed for comprehensive analysis of both lipophilic and hydrophilic active components in Salvia miltiorrhiza. The method integrated hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC) and reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RPLC), facilitating the efficient separation of compounds across a wide range of polarities.

Assessing the bioaccessibility and bioavailability of cadmium (Cd) is crucial for effective evaluation of the exposure risk associated with intake of Cd-contaminated rice. However, limited studies have investigated the influence of gut microbiota on these two significant factors. In this study, we utilized in vitro gastrointestinal simulators, specifically the RIVM-M (with human gut microbial communities) and the RIVM model (without gut microbial communities), to determine the bioaccessibility of Cd in rice.

Adulterating hazardous bisoxatin (BSO) and bisoxatin acetate (BSOA) in slimming foods poses a threat to public health. A rapid synchronous detection method is urgently needed. Herein, the precise design of four novel haptens based on the general skeleton of BSO and BSOA was driven by computer-chemical visualization strategy, which was used to raise monoclonal antibody (mAb) toward both target compounds.

Given the significant threat posed by oxyphenisatin adulterants (OPHs) in weight-loss foods, simultaneous analysis of the OPHs is necessary. Herein, four novel haptens based on the general epitope shared among the OPHs were raised by computer-aided chemical modeling prediction, with the expectation of eliciting antibody responses targeting three of the OPHs. One obtained monoclonal antibody (mAb) showed maximal half-inhibitory concentration (IC) of 0.

The label probe plays a crucial role in enhancing the sensitivity of lateral flow immunoassays. However, conventional fluorescent microspheres (FMs) have limitations due to their short fluorescence lifetime, susceptibility to background fluorescence interference, and inability to facilitate multi-component detection. In this study, carboxylate-modified Eu(III)-chelate-doped polystyrene nanobeads were employed as label probes to construct a multiple time-resolved fluorescent microsphere-based immunochromatographic test strip (TRFM-ICTS).

6-Benzylaminopurine (6-BA), a plant growth regulator with cytokinin-like properties, was recently reported to be illegally used in bean sprouts to increase their commercial appearance. It is still nevertheless challenging to quickly detect this adulteration. In this work, four novel haptens (haptens 1-4) of 6-BA were rationally designed with computer-assisted modeling analysis and then synthesized for use as immunizing haptens to produce antibodies.

The insoluble phosphorus in the soil is extremely difficult to be absorbed and used directly through the potato root system. Although many studies have reported that phosphorus-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) can promote plant growth and uptake of phosphorus, the molecular mechanism of phosphorus uptake and growth by PSB has not been investigated yet. In the present study, PSB were isolated from rhizosphere soil in soybean.

With the popularity of herbal tea in China, many food fraudsters have added illegal drugs to herbal tea to enhance its functions, among which aminopyrine is widely abused as an antipyretic and analgesic. Presently, there is no immunoassays for aminopyrine, and it is difficult to achieve real-time detection in the field. Based on a polyclonal antibody of aminopyrine with high specificity and sensitivity, an optimal combination of coating antigen/antibody was obtained by screening different coating antigens.

Sulfonylureas, a family of anti-diabetic drugs widely used in the clinical treatment of type 2 diabetes, have recently emerged as an illegal adulterant in functional foods, to enhance the claimed anti-diabetic activity. To establish a screening assay method against their adulteration, with the aid of molecular simulation of hapten, two antibodies were raised and complementarily used to enhance the broad-specificity of an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), which demonstrated simultaneous detection capability to 6 sulfonylureas; the detection limits ranged from 0.02 to 1.

The critical health risks caused by cadmium (Cd) via dietary exposure are commonly assessed by detecting Cd concentrations in foods. Differently, in this study, the bioaccessibility and bioavailability of Cd in major local harvests were introduced to assess the dietary exposure of local residents from a high-level environmental Cd region. The results indicated that certain Cd was released into the digestive juice after in vitro digestion with a bioaccessibility of 20-63% for rice and 3-32% for leafy vegetables, and the released portion was partially absorbed by Caco-2 cells with a bioavailability of 2-21% for rice and 0.

Most of the reported magnetic adsorbents are difficult to absorb multi-class of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), especially the short-chain PFASs. In this work, a novel fluorine and nitrogen functionalized magnetic graphene (G-NH-FBC/FeO) was first synthesized and characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The as-prepared G-NH-FBC/FeO was utilized as adsorbents for the magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) of 19 PFASs from water and functional beverages and showed excellent adsorption capacity probably due to the hydrophobic interaction.
