The study investigates the effectiveness of immersive virtual reality (VR) as a nonpharmaceutical approach to manage postoperative pain in patients following thoracoscopic surgery. In this single-center, triple-arm pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT), 61 postsurgical patients with a postoperative pain numerical rating scale (NRS) score ≥4 after receiving standard analgesia were included and assigned to either a quantum clinics-VR (QTC-VR) group, a Placebo-VR group, or a control group. The QTC-VR group engaged in a daily 10-minute interactive pain relief 3D-VR program, while the Placebo-VR group watched a daily 10-minute relaxation-based 2D film through VR headsets for three days following surgery.

This paper proposes a high-performance fiber optic interferometric hydrophone based on composite structure. Based on the air-backed push-pull fiber optic hydrophone structure, the inner elastic tube is replaced by a thick hollow column, introducing axial acoustic pressure sensing to improve the detection sensitivity of the fiber optic hydrophone. The influence of axial stress on the deformation of the composite structure is investigated by theoretical analysis and numerical simulation, and the structural design of fiber optic hydrophone with high acoustic pressure sensitivity and wide frequency response range is realized.

Currently, there remains a debate regarding the functional microorganisms responsible for the quality formation of Guang Chenpi (GCP). Thus, the metabolite profiles and microbial diversity of GCP samples subjected to natural treatment versus those sterilized via electron beam irradiation were investigated over a three-year period. It was found the main constituents of GCP were influenced both by spontaneous changes and microbial activity.

A biomarker framework for liver aging: the Aging Biomarker Consortium consensus statement.

Life Med

February 2024

Hepatopancreatobiliary Center, Beijing Tsinghua Changgung Hospital, School of Clinical Medicine, Tsinghua University, Beijing 102218, China.

In human aging, liver aging per se not only increases susceptibility to liver diseases but also increases vulnerability of other organs given its central role in regulating metabolism. Total liver function tends to be well maintained in the healthy elderly, so liver aging is generally difficult to identify early. In response to this critical challenge, the Aging Biomarker Consortium of China has formulated an expert consensus on biomarkers of liver aging by synthesizing the latest scientific literature, comprising insights from both scientists and clinicians.

Telomeres and telomerase play crucial roles in the initiation and progression of cancer. As biomarkers, they aid in distinguishing benign from malignant tissues. Despite the promising therapeutic potential of targeting telomeres and telomerase for therapy, translating this concept from the laboratory to the clinic remains challenging.

Electronic address:

Pigeon adenovirus type 1 predominantly infects pigeons under 12 months of age (mainly 3-5 months old), causing major clinical symptoms such as vomiting, dehydration, and discharge of thin yellow feces. In February 2023, an outbreak of a pathogen with symptoms similar to pigeon adenovirus infections occurred on a pigeon farm in Shandong Province, which was eventually identified as pigeon adenovirus type 1. In this study, a strain of PiAdV-1 was isolated from naturally infected pigeons and named pigeon-adenovirus-1-isolate-CH-SD-2023, and the hexon gene sequence as amplified and analyzed using polymerase chain reaction (PCR).

January 2025

Department of Endocrinology, Guang' anmen Hospital, China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, Beijing, 100053, China. Electronic address:

Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is a leading cause of chronic kidney disease worldwide, and podocyte ferroptosis plays a crucial role in its pathogenesis. Hirsutine (HS) reduces blood glucose levels and improve insulin resistance in diabetic mice, suggesting its potential use in diabetes treatment. Here, we established a db/db mouse model of DKD and administered HS for 8 weeks.

Article Synopsis
  • Since the Industrial Revolution, human activities have greatly increased nitrogen and phosphorus levels in river watersheds, especially influenced by climate change.
  • This study focused on the Dawen River Watershed in China from 2000 to 2021, analyzing the Net Anthropogenic Nitrogen Input (NANI) and Net Anthropogenic Phosphorus Input (NAPI) to assess their response to climate factors.
  • The findings indicated a decreasing trend in nitrogen input and a fluctuating trend for phosphorus, primarily driven by fertilizer use, while precipitation positively correlated with nutrient inputs and temperature had mixed effects.

In the coevolutionary process between plant pathogens and hosts, pathogen effectors, primarily proteinaceous, engage in interactions with host proteins, such as plant transcription factors (TFs), during the infection process. This review delves into the intricate interplay between TFs and effectors, a key aspect in the prolonged and complex battle between plants and pathogens. Effectors strategically manipulate TFs using diverse tactics.

Random Frequency Division Multiplexing.

Entropy (Basel)

December 2024

The School of Electric Engineering and Intelligentization, Dongguan University of Technology, Dongguan 523808, China.

In this paper, we propose a random frequency division multiplexing (RFDM) method for multicarrier modulation in mobile time-varying channels. Inspired by compressed sensing (CS) technology which use a sensing matrix (with far fewer rows than columns) to sample and compress the original sparse signal simultaneously, while there are many reconstruction algorithms that can recover the original high-dimensional signal from a small number of measurements at the receiver. The approach choose the classic sensing matrix of CS-Gaussian random matrix to compress the signal.

The properties, applications, and in vitro bioactivities of turmeric, turmeric essential oil (TEO), and turmeric essential oil by-products (TEO-BP) were evaluated using sensory analysis, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS), and electronic nose techniques. A total of 62 and 66 volatile organic compounds (VOCs), primarily terpenoids and sesquiterpenoids, were identified by GC-MS and GC-IMS, respectively. Distillation temperature, particularly at 90 °C, significantly influenced the color and organoleptic properties of TEO, with variations in VOC profiles driving these differences.
