The morbidity and mortality of chronic hepatitis C is related to progressive fibrosis and the development of cirrhosis. The development of fibrosis in patients with HCV is highly influenced by immune status, host response to the virus and associated factors, such as, age, sex, alcohol intake, diabetes, obesity and coinfection with other viruses. The rate of fibrosis progression differs depending on several factors, including the stage of fibrosis and the time since infection.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a new neurosurgical method principally used for the treatment of Parkinson disease (PD). Many new applications of DBS are under development, including the treatment of intractable psychiatric diseases. Brain imaging is used for the selection of patients for DBS, to localize the target nucleus, to detect complications, and to evaluate the final electrode contact position.

Human herpesviruses 6 (HHV-6), 7 (HHV-7) and 8 (HHV-8) are lymphotropic herpesviruses that may cause opportunistic diseases in immunosuppressed patients such as transplant or AIDS patients. The new commercial CMV HHV-6, 7, 8 R-gene kit (Argene, Varilhes, France) for the simultaneous quantitation of HHV-6 and qualitative detection of HHV-7 and HHV-8 was evaluated using whole blood samples (respectively, n=175, 100 and 161) and using different extraction and real-time PCR platforms in two Centers A and B. In comparison with HHV-6 in-house real-time PCR the commercial kit showed agreements of 96% (n=75) and 85% (n=100) in A and B, respectively, with significant Spearman's correlation between both techniques (in A: r=0.

Bruton's disease is the most frequently primary X-linked immunodeficiency. Patients are more susceptible to early and recurring infections associated with hypo/agammaglobulinemia and a severe B-cell deficiency. Moreover, 400 mutations were found in the XLA gene which codes the Btk tyrosine kinase and were identified as responsible for Bruton's disease.

The quality of treatment that one can realize today in conformal radiotherapy, can be reached only if one has access to 3D imaging allowing a precise determination of the volume of the organs at risk and of the GTV. For this reason, one has access to anatomical imaging, CT or MRI, and functional and metabolic imaging, PET or SPECT imaging. CT gives the electronic density of the tissues, which is essential to ensure a very precise calculation of dose distribution.

In order to assess clock-time estimation (CTE), we asked "what time is it in your opinion?" to 48 recent stroke in-patients, 21 with right (RH), 27 with left hemispheric (LH) lesions, and to 20 control in-patients without brain lesions (C). Errors were measured in terms of the number of minutes by which the estimated clock-time was later (advance errors) or earlier (delay errors) than the real clock-time. CTE was considered pathological when exceeding the mean advance or delay errors observed in control patients plus 2.

In order to develop preclinical models of malignant astrocytomas and oligodendrogliomas, a series of 54 resected gliomas (37 from oligodendroglial lineage and 17 from astrocytic lineage) were xenografted subcutaneously into nude mice. Molecular alterations commonly observed in gliomas subtypes, including LOH 1p and 1q, LOH 19q, LOH 10p and 10q, LOH 9p, TP53 and PTEN mutations, EGFR amplification, CDKN2A homozygous deletion and telomerase reactivation were systematically screened in the original and xenografted tumours. In all, 23 gliomas grew in nude mice.

Objective: To determine if asymptomatic stable chronic hyperlactatemia in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients under highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART, including nucleoside analog reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTI)) could be improved by antioxidant supplementation.
Design: To match two groups of patients taking NRTI for at least 24 months: 15 without and 15 with antioxidant supplementation (vitamin E, beta-carotene, N-acetylcysteine, selenium, Gingko biloba extracts and nutritional supplements). For both the groups, the supplementation by antioxidants or its lack was carefully assessed.

The diagnosis of primary ciliary dyskinesia is based on demonstration of ciliary defects, mainly concerning dynein arms. Whereas the absence of outer dynein arms can be easily distinguished, the absence of inner dynein arms is difficult to confirm because of their low contrast on electron microscopy. Ciliary ultrastructure was studied in 40 patients suffering from respiratory tract infections.

The aim of the study was to assess the relationships between oxidative stress, cardiac remodelling and fibrosis on an experimental model of heart failure with adrenergic stimulation. Large myocardial infarction (approximately 50% of the left ventricle myocardium) was obtained by ligation of the left coronary artery of normotensive male Wistar rats. Sham animals were submitted to left thoracotomy without coronary ligation.

We report a case of benign colonic tubular adenoma arising in a 36-year-old female at the site of ureterosigmoidostomy performed 25 years before. The tumor was revealed by recurrent episodes of pyelonephritis; hydronephrosis was present. On colonic enema, the tumor appeared lobulated, 4 cm in diameter.

Hormonal replacement therapy is prescribed more and more frequently to increase quality of life and decrease the symptomatic and organic consequences of the menopausal status. The different studies which analyzed the risk of breast cancer for women under hormonal replacement therapy show opposed conclusion. We reviewed articles published between 1980 and 1997 to try to conclude about the consequences of the action of this treatment in the risk of breast cancer from the characteristic of the hormonal replacement therapy and from known risk of breast cancer.
