Centre de Référence Maladie de Huntington, Assistance Publique Hôpitaux de Paris (AP-HP), Groupe Hospitalier Henri Mondor-Albert Chenevier, Créteil, France; Unité INSERM U955, Equipe 01 Neuropsychologie Interventionnelle, Créteil, France; Institut d'Etudes Cognitives, Ecole Normale Supérieure, Paris, France; Faculté de Médecine, Université Paris Est, Créteil, France.

The Unified Huntington's Disease Rating Scale (UHDRS) adequately measures decline in patients at early and moderate stages of Huntington's disease (HD). In patients with advanced HD, floor effects hamper the evaluation, thus calling for an adjusted scale. We designed the UHDRS-For Advanced Patients (UHDRS-FAP) to improve longitudinal assessment of patients at the advanced disease stage.

The PEEK-Optima(®), composite mixture of polyetheretherketon and inert materials, is used in orthopedics, spinal surgery and cranio-facial surgery. It could be used in dental implantology because of its biological and mechanical properties. The results of an experimental and finite element study made on basal implant prototypes, on basal implantology show that PEEK, contrary to titanium, has a compound structure that allows to optimize the distribution of masticatory forces around the implant.

Background: Whether proadrenomedullin (ProADM) improves the performance of the Risk of Early Admission to ICU (REA-ICU) score in predicting early, severe community-acquired pneumonia (ESCAP) has not been demonstrated.

Methods: Secondary analysis was completed of the original data from 877 consecutive patients with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) enrolled in the Procalcitonin-Guided Antibiotic Therapy and Hospitalization in Patients With Lower Respiratory Tract Infections (ProHOSP) study, a multicenter trial in EDs of six tertiary-care hospitals in Switzerland. ESCAP was defined by either the requirement for mechanical ventilation or vasopressive drugs or occurrence of death within 3 days of ED presentation.

We investigated the expression of SOX9, a transcription factor linked to the hedgehog pathways, and desert hedgehog, previously shown to be expressed in a malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor cell line, in neurofibromatosis 1 tumors (neurofibromas and malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor), and in a group of sporadic spindle cell sarcomas. We found that SOX9 was expressed in Schwann cells from neurofibromatosis 1 tumors, and was significantly up-regulated in malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor versus neurofibromas at the protein level (P < .0001) and in malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor and plexiform neurofibroma as compared to diffuse tumors at the mRNA level (P = .

Human and mouse mast cells express and secrete the GPI-anchored isoform of CD160.

J Invest Dermatol

April 2011

AP-HP, Groupe Hospitalier Henri Mondor-Albert Chenevier, Department of Pathology, and Université Paris 12, Faculté de Médecine, Créteil, France.

CD160 is expressed by human and mouse natural killer (NK) cells and other cytotoxic lymphocyte subpopulations. CD160 is mostly expressed as a trimeric 83 kDa glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored activating NK receptor, cleaved upon IL-15 stimulation in a secreted trimeric soluble form (sCD160) that binds to major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I molecules, while a transmembrane isoform appears. sCD160 exhibits immunoregulatory function as it inhibits CD8(+) T-lymphocyte cytotoxic activity.

Fetal bowel anomalies may reveal cystic fibrosis (CF) and the search for CF transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene mutations is part of the diagnostic investigations in such pregnancies, according to European recommendations. We report on our 18-year experience to document comprehensive CFTR genotypes and correlations with ultrasound patterns in a series of 694 cases of fetal bowel anomalies. CFTR gene analysis was performed in a multistep process, including search for frequent mutations in the parents and subsequent in-depth search for rare mutations, depending on the context.

Patients with acute leukemia who initially survive invasive fungal disease must receive chemotherapy or go on to transplant. Many centers change subsequent chemotherapy to decrease the risk of fungal reactivation. This case-control study compared acute leukemia patients (n=28) who developed a proven or probable fungal disease and survived four weeks later, to patients who did not (n=78), and assessed the impact of fungal disease on the chemotherapy regimens, and overall and event-free survival.

Grade III fetal bowel hyperechogenicity and/or loop dilatation observed at the second trimester of pregnancy can be due to several disease conditions, including cystic fibrosis (CF). Screening for frequent CF mutations is performed as a first step and, in certain situations, such as when a frequent CF mutation is found in the fetus, the increased risk of CF justifies an in-depth study of the second allele. To determine the contribution of large CFTR gene rearrangements in such cases, detected using a semiquantitative fluorescent multiplex PCR (QFM-PCR) assay, we collated data on 669 referrals related to suspicion of CF in fetuses from 1998 to 2009.

Endocannabinoids and their role in fatty liver disease.

Dig Dis

September 2010

AP-HP, INSERM U841, Groupe hospitalier Henri Mondor-Albert Chenevier, Service d'Hépatologie et de Gastroentérologie, Créteil, France.

The endocannabinoid system comprises receptors, CB1 and CB2, their endogenous lipidic ligands and machinery dedicated to endocannabinoid synthesis and degradation. An overactive endocannabinoid system appears to contribute to the pathogenesis of several diseases, including liver diseases. With the increasing incidence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in parallel with the obesity epidemic, the development of effective therapies is gaining considerable interest.
