Immune response to pertussis vaccine in COPD patients.

Sci Rep

July 2023

INSERM U955, Equipe 16, IMRB (Institut Mondor de Recherche Biomédicale), Université Paris-Est-Créteil (UPEC), 94010, Créteil, France.

Article Synopsis
  • * It compares the immune responses to the pertussis vaccine between 13 COPD patients and 8 healthy volunteers, finding no significant differences in their immune responses post-vaccination.
  • * The findings suggest that COPD patients respond well to pertussis vaccination, challenging the idea that they have a diminished immune response to all vaccines, underscoring the need for regular Tdap booster vaccinations in this group.

Absence of Mortality Differences Between the First and Second COVID-19 Waves in Kidney Transplant Recipients.

Kidney Int Rep

December 2022

Department of Transplantation, Nephrology and Clinical Immunology, Edouard Herriot Hospital, Hospices civils de Lyon, Lyon, France.

Introduction: SARS-CoV-2 pandemic evolved in 2 consecutive waves during 2020. Improvements in the management of COVID-19 led to a reduction in mortality rates among hospitalized patients during the second wave. Whether this progress benefited kidney transplant recipients (KTRs), a population particularly vulnerable to severe COVID-19, remained unclear.

According to expert guidelines, lymph node surgical excision is the standard of care for lymphoma diagnosis. However, core needle biopsy (CNB) has become widely accepted as part of the lymphoma diagnostic workup over the past decades. The aim of this study was to present the largest multicenter inventory of lymph nodes sampled either by CNB or surgical excision in patients with suspected lymphoma and to compare their diagnostic performance in routine pathologic practice.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a common autosomal dominant disorder. The role of angiogenesis and VEGF pathway in the pathogenesis of neurofibromas and malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) remains poorly understood. We assessed the expression of VEGF and VEGFR family members in cohorts of plexiform neurofibromas (pNF), MPNSTs and MPNST cell lines at transcript [pNF, n = 49; MPNST, n = 34] and protein levels [pNF, n = 21; MPNST, n = 9].

Myosteatosis as an independent risk factor for mortality after kidney allograft transplantation: a retrospective cohort study.

J Cachexia Sarcopenia Muscle

February 2022

Univ Paris Est Créteil, Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale (INSERM), Institut Mondor de Recherche Biomédicale (IMRB), Créteil, France.

Background: Patients with end-stage renal disease may display both a loss of skeletal muscle mass and an increase in muscle fat deposits. We aimed to analyse the impact of low skeletal muscle mass index (SMI, surrogate marker of sarcopenia) and low muscle density (MD, surrogate marker of myosteatosis) on patient survival after kidney transplantation (KT).

Methods: In a retrospective cohort of 200 kidney transplant recipients (KTr), we measured on an unenhanced cross-sectional computed tomography scan taken at the level of the third lumbar vertebra within the previous year or at the time of KT, both SMI (muscle cross-sectional area normalized for height , reported in cm /m ) and MD (mean attenuation of muscle cross-sectional area, expressed in Hounsfield units).

Department of Nephrology and Renal Transplantation, Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Paris (AP-HP), Institut Francilien de Recherche en Néphrologie et Transplantation (IFRNT), Groupe Hospitalier Henri-Mondor/Albert-Chenevier, Créteil, France.

Article Synopsis
  • People with HIV have lower success rates when getting kidney transplants compared to others, but a new medicine called belatacept might help them live longer with their new kidney.
  • In a study in France, 12 patients switched from an older medicine to belatacept after getting their kidney transplant, and most of them (92%) were doing well after a year.
  • The study suggests that using belatacept might be safer and better for long-term kidney health in HIV-positive patients, but more research is needed with more people to be sure.

Background: The Wilms tumor 1 suppressor gene, WT1, is expressed throughout life in podocytes and is essential for their function. Downregulation of WT1 has been reported in podocyte diseases but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Podocyte injury is the hallmark of idiopathic nephrotic syndrome (INS), the most frequent glomerular disease in children and young adults.

Recommended preventive strategies before kidney transplantation include screening and treatment of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI), and updating of the recommended vaccines. We prospectively evaluated in dedicated infectious diseases consultations, from 2014 to 2018, the clinical and vaccination data of new adult kidney allograft candidates. Patients were offered an updated vaccination schedule, if appropriate, and were screened for LTBI using chest imaging and interferon gamma release assay (IGRA).

Article Synopsis
  • Invertebrates have become valuable models for studying complex interactions between hosts and microbes, particularly for understanding pathogenic fungi.
  • The larvae of certain invertebrates provide a reliable system to analyze the disease-causing abilities and factors of various fungal strains.
  • The review discusses different methods for assessing fungal pathogenicity, summarizes mutants tested for virulence, and suggests that while invertebrate models are useful, mammalian models may still be needed for validation.

December 2020

Research Unit of Rare Diseases, Department of Pediatric and Inherited Metabolic Disorders, First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic; Section on Nephrology, Wake Forest School of Medicine, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, USA. Electronic address:

There have been few clinical or scientific reports of autosomal dominant tubulointerstitial kidney disease due to REN mutations (ADTKD-REN), limiting characterization. To further study this, we formed an international cohort characterizing 111 individuals from 30 families with both clinical and laboratory findings. Sixty-nine individuals had a REN mutation in the signal peptide region (signal group), 27 in the prosegment (prosegment group), and 15 in the mature renin peptide (mature group).

Patients with relapsed/refractory diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) have adverse outcomes. We evaluated the efficacy and safety of the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase inhibitor copanlisib in patients with relapsed/refractory DLBCL and assessed the relationship between efficacy and DLBCL cell of origin (COO; activated B-cell like [ABC] and germinal center B-cell like [GCB]) and other biomarkers. The primary endpoint was objective response rate (ORR) in DLBCL COO subgroups (ABC, GCB, and unclassifiable) and by CD79B mutational status (NCT02391116).

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers studied 34 cases of breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BI-ALCL) to understand the genetic changes that contribute to its development, using advanced sequencing techniques.* -
  • They found that 74% of cases had mutations in epigenetic modifiers, particularly KMT2C and KMT2D, which were linked to changes in specific histone methylation patterns.* -
  • Additionally, mutations in the JAK/STAT signaling pathway were common, especially in tumor samples, suggesting these genetic alterations play a role in the pathology of BI-ALCL.*
