Two types of selective media, the chromogenic medium Strepto B ID and two non-chromogenic media Strepto B agar and the Granada medium, were tested and compared to blood agar plates (BAP) for screening of Group B streptococcus vaginal colonization in pregnant women. All tested media were comparable in terms of sensitivity however, their use in routine laboratories may markedly facilitate the rapid detection of GBS in vaginal samples.

A simple analytical method was developed in 100 microL of plasma for the simultaneous assay of the 7 nucleoside/nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors (abacavir, didanosine, emtricitabine, lamivudine, stavudine, tenofovir, and zidovudine) currently used for the treatment of HIV-infected patients. After adding the internal standard, 6-beta-hydroxy-theophyline, plasma samples were precipitated with 500 microL acetonitrile and the supernatants were evaporated to dryness. The residues were reconstituted with 500 microL of water and 10 microL of the extracts were injected in the chromatographic system.

Antiretroviral therapy available in 2008 have shown their capacity to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with infection by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) but do not eradicate the virus. Treatment of HIV infection is the subject of French and international guidelines, updated regularly as a function of available data on efficacy and toxicity as well as of the arrival of new drugs. The objective of antiretroviral therapy is to reduce viral replication as much as possible, making it undetectable in plasma, that is, to obtain a plasma viral load less than the detection threshold, generally < 50 copies/mL.

Background: A spectrum effect was defined as differences in the sensitivity or specificity of a diagnostic test according to the patient's characteristics or disease features. A spectrum effect can lead to a spectrum bias when subgroup variations in sensitivity or specificity also affect the likelihood ratios and thus post-test probabilities. We propose and illustrate a methodological framework to distinguish spectrum effects from spectrum biases.

The causes of male infertility may be identified, with the possibility of drugs treatment, or they may be idiopathic, for which treatments are at the research stage. The treatments available aim to increase the quantity and quality of spermatozoa produced by increasing their fertilising capacity and protecting their nuclear structure. Hormone treatments - recombinant FSH, purified FSH - give different results depending on whether studies examine semen parameters or fertilisation and pregnancy rates.

Purpose: The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome induce account for over 40 million deaths in the past 20 years. Given that the currently available treatments to prevent HIV transmission and disease are not effective in eradicating the virus, vaccination likely represents the only efficacious adapted response to the global impact of this infection. This paper reviews the challenges encountered in the development of an HIV vaccine as well as the different vaccine approaches and main HIV vaccine candidates evaluated in clinical trials.

Objective: Pituitary stalk interruption syndrome (PSIS) is a frequent cause of GH deficiency (GHD) and is commonly associated with other PH deficiencies (PHDs). Although previous reports have correlated multiple PHDs with severe anatomical lesions, the status of the gonadotrophic axis has not yet been thoroughly analysed.
Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 27 patients (15 males, 12 females) with GHD and PSIS defined by MRI findings.

Rationale: Changes in the demography of doctors require changes in care practices.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to identify factors associated with doctors' workload in the ophthalmology consultation department of a university hospital, with a view to developing methods to improve the organization of hospital outpatient clinics.
Methods: A 10-day cross-sectional survey was carried out in an ophthalmology outpatient clinic (in- and outpatient consultations, including emergencies) specializing in the uveitis care.

Eleven years ago, Irish authors, using molecular biology, demonstrated the existence of Candida dubliniensis, a new species of Candida close to Candida albicans. Initially isolated from AIDS patients with oral candidiasis, this species was detected, even in immunocompetent patients. Recently, with new, easy to implement identification tests (latex, immunochromatography), numerous epidemiological studies were undertaken.

Purpose: Immunization, by preventing infections, has a major interest for the immunocompromised subjects. The aim of this article is to make a point on data concerning efficacy (in terms of immunogenicity) and safety of viral vaccines available in France and to synthesize existing guidelines for four groups of patients: solid organ and hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients, HIV infected persons and patients treated by immunosuppressive drugs for a systemic disease.
Current Knowledge And Key Points: Available data about vaccines immunogenicity and safety for immunocompromised adults are rare.

Aims: A population pharmacokinetic model was developed to characterize the transfer of nelfinavir and its active metabolite M8 from maternal to cord plasma and amniotic fluid.
Methods: Concentration data were obtained from 75 women on the day of delivery and for whom maternal, umbilical plasma and amniotic fluid samples were collected. Data from 53 pregnant, 61 nonpregnant and seven consecutively pregnant and non pregnant women were then added to the database, the contents of which were analyzed using NONMEM.

The aim of this review is to focus on the nosological classification of neonatal "convulsions", to precise the underlying aetiologies and the prognosis, and to propose diagnostic and therapeutical approach. Seizures may be epileptic or not, they may be occasional, part of an epilepsy syndrome or associated to a metabolic disease. Electroencephalography plays a central role; it enables to confirm the epileptic nature of the ictal events, it allows to evaluate the prognosis and to guide the treatment decision, and sometimes may help in the etiological diagnosis.

Objectives: To elucidate a part of the prenatal natural history of dural sinus malformation of the posterior fossa.
Methods: Ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging were performed from 31 to 32 weeks' gestation.
Results: We observed the progressive development of a thrombus that was visible as an expanding hyperechoic round area within a cystic mass of the posterior fossa.

Objectives: Intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis is recommended to prevent neonatal group B streptococcal (GBS) disease in colonized women, and penicillin or aminopenicillin constitute the first-line antibiotics. Most isolates are resistant to tetracycline, and resistance to macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin (MLS) antibiotics is increasing. Therefore, laboratory testing for MLS resistance in GBS is now recommended for penicillin-allergic patients.

A sensitive and selective high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) method with ultra-violet detection has been developed and validated for the simultaneous determination of posaconazole and voriconazole, two systemic anti-fungal agents. An internal standard diazepam was added to 100 microL of human plasma followed by 3 mL of hexane-methylene chloride (70:30, v/v). The organic layer was evaporated to dryness and the residue was reconstituted with 100 microL of mobile phase before being injected in the chromatographic system.

Leptin has been primarily considered as a protein secreted by the adipocyte and a regulator of satiety and energy homeostasis. A role for leptin in pregnancy was later suggested as circulating levels of leptin are high in the pregnant woman and leptin is synthetized within the placenta. Placental leptin production is increased in various obstetrical conditions associated with alterations of fetal growth (diabetes, preeclampsia).
